Chapter 3: Sister-in-law, You're Bringing Bad Luck

Clara's grandparents had always believed a complete family consisted of parents, sons and daughters. They disliked Clara's mother, who couldn't have babies anymore and even made things difficult for her. Clara's mother thought all this suffering was her fault, so how could she possibly like Clara?

"I don't like Ethan," Clara said calmly, trying to conceal her hurt and grievance with a flat tone and composed expression.

Sophia wanted to say something, but Iris stopped her by quietly tugging on her sleeve and shaking her head.

Sophia glanced at Iris, unwillingly closed her mouth.

"Mom, Clara is not that kind of person. I'm Clara's sister, and Ethan is Clara's brother-in-law. How could Clara do such a thing? Clara is an honest and kind girl; she wouldn't do that," Iris said to Sophia.

Sophia looked at Clara, snorted, and said, "Iris trusts you so much. Don't let her down. Don't do shameless things like stealing your sister's man."

Who was being shameless?

What shameless thing had she done?

Why did her mother have to say that about her?

Clara felt both sad and angry but remained silent. After all, in front of her mother, anything she said was wrong. Her very existence was a mistake to her mother. Over the years, she had gotten used to it.

She had grown accustomed to facing her mother's anger and disgust with silence.

...

Ethan escorted the Logan family members to the hotel entrance.

"Ethan, tell me, what are you thinking?" Grace Kelley, Ethan's mother, asked with a frown.

She never liked Iris, or rather, she didn't like the Everett family. Marriage had always been about matching social status. Although the Everett family was wealthy, they were far inferior to the Logan family. Ethan marrying Iris did nothing to help his career or Logan Group.

Moreover, with the current situation, she believed Ethan should seize the opportunity to trample the Everett family into the mud, ensuring they could never rise again.

She never expected Iris to betray Ethan, and for Ethan to then marry the second daughter of the Everett family.

Did Ethan really like the daughters of the Everett family that much?

Were there no other women in the world?

"Since I married her, I'll live happily with her ever after," Ethan said calmly. "Also, we'll make you have a grandchild soon."

Grace's face turned pale with anger.

Julian looked at Ethan with satisfaction. "It's good that you think that way."

Grace was even angrier but couldn't show it.

Her father-in-law supported Ethan; as a daughter-in-law, how could she go against him?

Her father-in-law was the chairman of Logan Group and the head of the Logan family. His authority was deeply rooted in both Logan Group and the family. She respected and feared him from the bottom of her heart and dared not contradict him.

The driver brought the car around, and Ethan helped Julian and the others into it.

Julian smiled and said, "Go on up. You've had a long day; get some rest."

Ethan nodded.

He watched until the car disappeared from sight before turning back into the hotel.

When Ethan returned to the room, the Everett family members were still there. Seeing Ethan made them feel awkward.

Ethan walked in calmly and said to William, "It's late. My in-laws, you must be tired after a long day. You should go back and rest early."

William was pleased to hear Ethan call him that. He smiled and said, "Alright."

Sophia and Iris couldn't figure out what Ethan was thinking and felt uneasy.

"Let's go," William said to Iris and Sophia.

Iris looked at Ethan with red eyes but didn't move from the sofa.

Sophia glanced at Ethan and said, "Ethan, Iris has something to say to you."

Ethan looked at Iris and nodded. "Go ahead."

His expression was calm, neither disgusted nor pleased.

His calmness made Iris even more nervous. She would rather Ethan scolded or humiliated her; at least that would show he was angry and still cared about her.

But his current calmness suggested he didn't care about her at all.

Iris didn't want to believe that Ethan didn't care about or love her. If he didn't care or love her, why did he get engaged and date her?

"Ethan..." Iris called his name once, and tears immediately streamed down her face.

Ethan frowned and looked at Iris. "Today is Clara's and my happy day, but, my wife's elder sister, you're shedding tears. Is this how you bless us?"

Iris felt a sharp pain in her heart, and her tears flowed even more fiercely. His calm words hurt more than harsh ones.

He truly didn't care at all.

Her tears and weakness didn't move him at all.

"My wife's elder sister, you're bringing bad luck," Ethan said coldly.

Iris couldn't bear his humiliation any longer and ran out crying with her hand over her mouth.

"Iris," Sophia called urgently as she chased after her.

William looked at Clara and then at Ethan, sighed, and left as well.

The room suddenly quieted down with only Clara and Ethan left.
