Clara had initially thought that the Logan family might give her a hard time, especially her mother-in-law Grace, who she could clearly sense didn't like her. But no one gave her any trouble.
The family had a peaceful meal together.
Clara breathed a sigh of relief.
After dinner, she obediently returned to her room.
She wasn't familiar with the people in the Logan family, and with the conflict between the main and second branches, she didn't feel the need to socialize with anyone else. She actually didn't want to go back to her room because it was Ethan's room, but if she didn't go back, she didn't know where else she could go.
It was now evening, and knowing Ethan's personality, she thought he wouldn't agree to let her go out.
But deep down, she really wanted to go out.
She wanted to get some fresh air and have some quiet time. Ever since the day of their wedding, when she went from being a bridesmaid to a bride, she had been in a daze. She felt like a puppet without thoughts, doing whatever Ethan told her to do.
Ethan didn't return to the room, and Clara relaxed. She was afraid of Ethan, and being in the same room as him made her nervous and uneasy.
Clara changed into her pajamas, got into bed, and started chatting with her good friends on her phone.
Clara had two good friends, Lucy Harmon and Emma Mooney.
The three of them had known each other since elementary school. Over the years, they were classmates from elementary to middle school to high school, and only separated when they went to different universities. Clara and Emma ended up attending the same university but different schools. Lucy had better grades and got into a better university in a city about an hour away from Riverton.
Even though they were apart, the three of them had a WhatsApp group where they chatted every day about life, food, clothes, makeup, shoes, bags, celebrities, and gossip.
These past few days, Clara hadn't been in the mood and hadn't been chatting in the group. It was only Lucy and Emma talking.
Clara briefly skimmed through the chat history. There were many jokes about her, teasing her about marrying Ethan and becoming the lady of the house. They joked about wanting to rely on her.
As Clara's friends, they were well aware of her situation in the Everett family.
When Clara saw her two friends guessing that she hadn't been online because Ethan kept her in bed, she blushed.
Clara: Nonsense, I can get out of bed just fine.
Clara couldn't help but defend herself.
Emma Mooney: Ah, so you can get out of bed. Looks like Riverton's first son isn't that great after all.
Lucy: Clara, these past few days, has Ethan been standing up for you against the Everett family?
Emma: That's how it goes in novels and TV shows: the pitiful little one who wasn't valued at home suddenly marries someone important, and then that important person helps them get revenge on those who bullied them before.
Clara: You've been reading too many novels. Ethan hasn't done that. He's very indifferent. He married me just to get back at my sister and the Everett family.
Lucy: Don't worry, for now it might be revenge, but soon he'll slowly fall in love with you.
Clara: How do you know?
Lucy: That's how it goes in those melodramatic revenge dramas on TV. Haven't you watched those eight o'clock shows?
Clara:... Those are just TV shows.
Lucy: You don't understand. TV reflects real life.
Emma: So, have you and Ethan...you know?
Lucy: Hehe, it looks like you have. Is Ethan unable to resist your young and beautiful body?
Emma: Alright, Clara, don't worry. Everything is developing according to the plot of a novel. Soon, Ethan will love you uncontrollably.
Lucy: Alright, stop chatting with us here. Go take a nice bath, get ready in bed, and wait for Ethan.
Just as Clara was about to reply, she heard the sound of the door opening. Startled, she exited WhatsApp. It would be awkward if Ethan saw what Emma and Lucy were saying.
Ethan walked in and Clara pretended to casually glance at him before returning to her phone and logging into Twitter.
Ethan looked at Clara lying on the bed playing with her phone and raised an eyebrow.
So young, yet loves staying in bed like this.
But Ethan didn't pay any attention to her and started working at his desk with his notebook.
Although Clara pretended to be focused on her phone, she was secretly keeping an eye on Ethan. Seeing him engrossed in his work, she quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
She felt hopeless and didn't know when these anxious days would end.
After looking at her phone for a while, Clara fell asleep. She had been severely sleep-deprived these past few days.
Ethan turned his head and looked at Clara sleeping on the bed with her head tilted.
Such a brave young girl.
Taking her sister's place and marrying him without any fuss. Doing whatever he told her to do.
This was good.
...
Clara slept until dawn. Feeling something restraining her waist, she turned her head and saw that she was lying on her side with Ethan holding her from behind. There was something pressing against her buttocks. Having experienced certain things before, Clara knew what it was. Her face turned slightly red as she gently moved her body, trying to break free from his embrace.
