Ethan watched Clara's eager back, curling his lips into a cold smile.
Heartless Girl.
Running so fast, did she think he would eat her?
And she wanted to live on campus?
Dream on.
She claimed it was for studying, but he knew exactly what she was up to.
She was far from being able to outsmart him.
Iris spent several days in a daze at home.
She didn't dare to go out.
On the day of the wedding, the Everett family had invited many guests, and Ethan had mercilessly thrown her and Alexander's photos on the ground for everyone to see. Now, even without stepping outside, she knew how people were talking about her.
They said she was shameless, promiscuous, and deserved her fate for trying to juggle two relationships.
Except for her mother, her family blamed her too, saying she almost caused a huge scandal and nearly offended the Logan family.
At this moment, the only comfort Iris could think of was Alexander, but he had gone abroad.
She knew Alexander left because he was heartbroken over her marrying Ethan.
She called Alexander with her phone, but it indicated his phone was off. She thought he had blocked her. She tried calling from another phone, but it was still off.
Alexander had really turned off his phone.
Was he cutting himself off from everything in this city? Would he stay abroad and never return?
Iris's mind was filled with chaotic thoughts, and her mental state deteriorated. She felt as if life had lost all meaning and she could leave this world at any moment.
Sitting in front of her dressing table, she looked at herself in the mirror. Just a few days ago, she had been vibrant and lively. But now, in such a short time, she seemed like a completely different person. The light in her eyes had dimmed, and her pale lips made her look like a woman decades older.
Numb and lifeless.
Suddenly, Iris began to cry.
She couldn't understand how she had ended up like this. She felt she couldn't go on this way. Mechanically, she picked up her skincare products and started applying them to her face. At that moment, the phone on the table rang. Seeing the two words flashing on the screen, tears streamed down her face...
With trembling hands, she answered the call while crying, "Alex..."
"I'm sorry, I'm back," came the familiar gentle voice of a man from the other end of the line.
Iris cried even harder, unable to control herself.
Iris and Alexander arranged to meet. Iris dressed herself carefully but found in the mirror that she looked too haggard after the past few days. Even with delicate makeup, she couldn't hide it. In the end, she washed off all the makeup and went to the meeting with a bare face.
Walking into the café, she saw Alexander sitting by the window, sipping coffee and gazing gently outside. Her anxious heart slowly calmed down.
It didn't matter; even if she lost Ethan, she still had Alexander.
Although Alexander wasn't as wealthy as Ethan, he was much gentler.
Ethan was cold and unsmiling, neither gentle nor considerate, never sweet-talking—just like an ice block. But Alexander was different; he was warm and tender. With him, she felt like a little princess, cherished and protected by him.
Apart from being richer and more powerful than Alexander, Ethan had no other advantages.
She had already lost Ethan; she couldn't afford to lose Alexander too. Alexander was now her only lifeline. She had to hold on to him tightly and marry him to show those who laughed at her that she was doing well and was happy.
Iris took a deep breath and walked toward Alexander with red-rimmed eyes.
"Alex," Iris called softly from a short distance away, her eyes red as she looked at Alexander.
Alexander turned at the sound of her voice and saw Iris.
Iris wore a white dress with no makeup on her face, looking very pale. The combination of her pallor and red eyes gave her a fragile appearance that evoked pity.
Alexander stood up and walked over to Iris, sighing helplessly yet tenderly. "How did you end up looking so miserable?"
Iris could no longer hold back her tears.
Alexander gently pulled Iris into his arms and said tenderly, "Don't cry anymore; I'm back."
"Alex..." Iris clung to Alexander, crying sorrowfully. In public, she didn't dare to wail loudly; instead, she silently wept with occasional sobs, soaking Alexander's suit with her tears.
After crying enough, Alexander led Iris to sit on the sofa, pulling a curtain around them to create a private space.
"Alex..." Iris looked at Alexander with tear-filled eyes.
Suddenly, Alexander leaned in and pressed Iris against the back of the sofa, kissing her fiercely.
Iris held him tightly.
Their relationship had long surpassed mere friendship; they were deeply intimate.
Alexander was usually gentle and considerate, but when it came to moments like this, he turned into a fierce beast. Every time he was rough and intense as if wanting to devour her whole. That ferocity always brought Iris immense pleasure.
