Chapter 1: Sister's Scandal
"Ethan Logan, do you take Clara Everett to be your wife? To care for her, cherish her, and protect her, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, for as long as you both shall live?" the priest asked Ethan.
Clara was startled to hear her name. How did the priest know she was Clara?
She had been worried about what to do if the priest mentioned her sister's name instead.
The guests were also surprised and whispered among themselves. The bride's name didn't seem to match.
"I do," Ethan said, his tone as cold as ever.
The priest nodded in satisfaction and turned to Clara. "Clara Everett, do you take Ethan Logan to be your husband? To care for him, cherish him, and protect him, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, for as long as you both shall live?"
Clara looked at the priest and said, "I do."
The priest smiled gently. "You may now exchange rings."
The best man and maid of honor brought the ring box forward. Clara took a ring with one hand and gently held Ethan's hand with the other, sliding the ring onto his finger.
Though she appeared calm on the surface, her palms were sweating from nervousness.
It was Ethan's turn to put the ring on Clara.
He took the ring with one hand and held Clara's hand with the other, trying to slide the ring onto her finger.
But the ring got stuck at the knuckle; it wouldn't go any further.
The ring was too small.
The ring was sized for her sister Iris, who was very slim at 165 cm and just over 80 pounds. Clara was about the same height but weighed over 90 pounds, so her fingers were naturally a bit thicker than Iris's.
Ethan looked at Clara's white, plump fingers, his eyes twinkling with laughter.
Clara blushed with embarrassment.
Should she go on a diet?
The priest saw that the ring exchange was complete and nodded in satisfaction. "Mr. Logan, you may now kiss your beautiful bride."
Clara's heart skipped a beat. She nervously looked at Ethan, who was staring at her. She quickly looked away, her eyelashes trembling with unease.
Ethan gently grasped Clara's arms and leaned in closer.
Knowing she couldn't escape, Clara watched his handsome face come nearer and then quickly shut her eyes, clutching her dress tightly.
She felt a cool sensation on her lips.
Startled, she opened her eyes.
Ethan had really kissed her!
She had thought he would just pretend, using a camera trick. But Ethan had actually kissed her for real.
How could he do that?
She was his sister-in-law!
What a jerk!
It was a light and brief kiss. If he had to describe how it felt to kiss her, it tasted like lip balm—apple-flavored, sweet and tangy with a hint of freshness.
Not bad.
Ethan released her and saw her wide-eyed stare of shock. He smiled lightly.
A bit cute.
Seeing Ethan smile made Clara blush even more. She turned her face away in frustration.
...
Ten o'clock at night.
In the presidential suite of the hotel.
Ethan and Clara's wedding banquet was held at Riverton's only six-star hotel. The Logan family, wealthy as they were, had booked the entire hotel and decorated the presidential suite as a bridal chamber with colorful heart-shaped balloons and fragrant roses, creating a romantic wedding room atmosphere.
It was lively and romantic.
But at this moment, the atmosphere in the suite was awkward, even dreadful.
Members of the Logan and Everett families sat on the sofas. The Logans were furious; the Everetts were anxious.
"Mr. Logan, we are truly sorry for what happened today," William, Clara's father, said to Julian with an awkward smile.
Julian snorted, looking at William with disdain. "An apology is not enough."
William was at a loss for words.
The Everett family was indeed at fault. Julian's imposing presence only made William more uneasy. Finally, he directed his frustration at Iris. Frowning, he glared at her and scolded, "Apologize to Ethan and the elders."
Iris's eyes were red and swollen from crying all day; her double eyelids had turned into single ones from all the tears.
Tearfully, Iris looked at Ethan's coldly handsome face. This face had always captivated her. He was supposed to be her husband. But now, he had become her sister Clara's husband—her brother-in-law.
Her fiancé had become her brother-in-law.
Tears streamed down Iris's face again. "Ethan..."
She wanted to apologize but doing so would mean admitting she was wrong—that she had cheated on Ethan.
But she couldn't avoid it; the evidence was irrefutable. She couldn't deny it.
So she could only cry sadly while looking at Ethan with a pleading gaze. She still hoped that Ethan had feelings for her—that he loved her. She hoped that his marriage to Clara was just a temporary measure.
