Chapter 6

Nick POV

I stumble out of the car drained from the last events, feeling slightly overwhelmed at all the news I've had to take in.

The clouds had started to cluster and the trees danced their rain dance. Sometimes I want to sit in the rain and just think, feel everything and nothing all at once.

Adien hates me but I really want to get into that academy, I definitely can't get a higher grade in school without any help. I could always hire a private tutor, but I don't have enough money. God knows I'm terrible at maths and science, even if I did have enough for a private tutor I'd probably run them out of business, I'm hopeless.

I walk into the house as quietly as possible hoping no one would hear me. I am on the second creaky step trying to be as light as a feather before I hear footsteps, I freeze knowing I can't escape. Damn these noisy floorboards.

"Nick, where have you been?" Sally whispered looking worried, a layer of panic glazed in her eye making me feel bad. Somehow I forget to call her.

"Hi, what's for dinner?" I say ignoring her question hoping to change the subject, but luck isn't on my side.

"Don't try and change the subject, I was so worried about you, your principal called she told me about your amazing opportunity" her voice changing from concern to excitement. Somehow my excitement is dwindled, her joy for me, though appreciate, felt like a forecast warning before I disappoint her.

I smile at her trying not to ruin her happiness, to be honest, no one ever wants to ruin Sally's happiness she has a way of making people happy without even trying, I wonder if Mrs. Moore told her about Adien.

"I'm so proud of you, I've always known you were a special one; an ambitious one" Sally spoke as if reliving a memory.

"Thanks, Sally...I'm going to go and do homework," I mumble trying to get away from her as quickly as possible.

"Nick... it'll be five years in a few weeks, will you be okay?" she questioned grabbing my arm gently and looking me in the eyes. I ducked my head scared of facing her, hoping my face wouldn't give me away.

"I'll be fine I promise" I say shaking off her touch. I walk up the stairs opening my bedroom door, before collapsing on my double bed, as I hit the pillow an overwhelming blow of tiredness hits me, I hadn't realized I was this tired. I ought to think about the university but my mind has stopped processing.

I feel my eyelids droop before I become completely unconscious...

*knock knock*

"Nick, its time for dinner" I hear Angel speak from behind the door. I rub my eyes as if trying to rub the tiredness away before opening the door to be swallowed by Angel's furious hug.

Angel was my best friend (everyone in school thinks we're dating), she was sweet, loyal, beautiful and the most amazing person you could ever meet. Angels parents died in plane crash, she started staying with her grandmother but she soon died of a heart attack.

I don't think in all my life I have come to love someone the way I had come to love her. She's the closest thing I have to a sister..

Hi, Angel" I say happily, hugging her back. Angel had her hair loose, the tight 4c coils floated like a halo. "Are you feeling better?"

"Yeah my migraine has vanished with the help of some very strong painkillers, and I'm no longer feeling sick so I should be in school by tomorrow," she said as we walked down the stairs me carrying her bridal style.

She was very popular, participated in so many extracurricular activities along with volunteering at a puppy rescue centre, no wonder she had migraines. In fact I recon her migraines are self-inflicted from the inhuman amount of work her does.

"I bet you can't wait to see Jared tomorrow then," I tease seeing her smile open wider and her eyes zoom to the floor. She hits my arm only making me laugh, she'd had a huge crush on Jared for ages now, another one of my best friends.

We sit down, talking about our days and laughing at horrendous jokes. This is what I call family...
