You again

Janelle and I haven’t really hit it off well with our first encounter. The next morning she was up and gone when Ruby and I woke up. Ruby was already moving around the room getting ready for her class while I still tried to wake up. “Are you one of those morning people?” I asked pulling my fingers through my disheveled hair. “Ha, no! But I’m on a scholarship and my parents can’t really afford to pay for my college fees.” She answered. “Oh.” I responded. “And you?” She asked looking at me. “I’m also here on scholarship.” I answered her. “You always wanted to study Psychology?” Ruby then asked while making up her bed. “It opens a few career options I would really be interested in doing.” I replied. “And you? Miss. Physics?” I asked standing up from my bed.

“Science is just a part of who I am. I have the brain to do it, why not use it?” I smiled at her reply. “Don’t worry about what the world thinks of you. They are all just jealous because their brains are not as big as yours.” She kind of look impressed with my response. “Technically it’s just I decide to use my full brain function.” I bit back a smile. “Now you are getting all technical with me.” I joked while going through my clothes and picking out what I was going to wear. “I just think people don’t want to be my friends because my brain normally takes over and makes the conversation all awkward, you know?” I looked at her when I heard the vulnerability in her voice.

“People just misunderstood you. They will call you weird when you speak a language they can’t speak. At least I can say that intelligent talking is my favorite language.” I left our room and headed over to the showers where I found a few girls in the showers. I said my hello’s and headed over to an empty shower stall. I took a quick shower, got dressed, and headed back to the room where I found Ruby waiting for me.

“Ready?” I asked dropping my things on my bed. I grabbed my bag and skateboard and headed out with her where we followed the path leading to the College. Ruby walked beside me while I was on my skateboard. “You really don’t care much what people think of you?” Ruby asked noticing that people were looking. “They are looking at me because I’m not from around here. They can smell intruders from a mile away.” I replied jokingly. She caught my joke and snickered. I placed my foot down to stop me from skating and bent down to pick up my board when some jackass decided to turn a blind eye and walked right into me making me drop my board from the impact.

“Don’t you think that you are too old to be riding that thing?” A deep, almost dark voice asked. “You think Tony Hawk stopped skating at the age of 21?” I asked without looking up to pick up my discarded board. “Tony Hawk?” He asked confused. I looked at the person when I got to my feet and to my surprise found myself looking at a guy bearing a hell lot of resemblance to me. “You seriously don’t know who Tony Hawk is?” I asked not really surprised. “Should I?” He asked frowning.

I couldn’t stop looking at him. His eyes, face posture, and the shape of his jaw. “You know it’s rude to stare at people especially when they are standing right in front of you.” He tried to make it sound like a joke but I think it was his way of flirting. “There is a huge difference between staring and observing.” I replied noticing the surprise in his eyes. “She bites. I like it.” He replied with a wink. Not a chance, big boy. “Don’t you think that line is getting pretty old?” Someone else asked making me turn my head when I recognized the voice.

It was the guy from the beach. His eyes lit up as he recognized my face. Oh, boy. “I know you. The girl from the beach with the New Orleans accent.” He said smiling. Does he ever stop smiling? “The boy who thinks he knows what my taste in men is.” I replied making his smile grow. “I can guarantee you that I’m far from being a boy, sugar. I’m all man.” He said. I had to control myself from rolling my eyes at him. “Oh, please.” The other guy huffed. The guy from the beach smirked. “Don’t you have somewhere else to be?” The guy asked who walked into me. “Yeah, but you are in my way, tough guy.” I stepped away so that he could pass when the other guy didn’t make a move.

“The name’s Travis, sugar, and fair warning you might want to stay away from Damian here. His so-called girlfriend is very much overprotective.” Damian glared at Travis but Travis just ignored his look and started to make his way. “Hey, Rubs. What’s up?” Travis greeted Ruby as he walked past her.

I looked back at Damian and wondered if he was the one I was looking for. “I guess your girlfriend is the one making her way over and shooting daggers at me with her eyes?′ I asked noticing a tall blonde making her way over to us. “That would be her.” He replied looking at her. “You might want to enlighten her that there is nothing going on between us before she eats my fist for breakfast.” I turned and walked away catching up with Ruby who waited for me close by.

“Rubs?” I asked her when I heard Travis calling her that name as he greeted her. “Most of us here, attended the same high school but the rest decided to go to upper-class Universities.” She answered. “Travis is harmless. But Damian is the one you really want to stay away from.” She suggested. “Why’s that?” I asked.

“You’ll probably get to know him yourself.” She said pulling up her shoulders. “All I know when I left high school I wanted to get as far as away from all of them only to find out that I will be seeing them for the next four years of my life.” She said sounding quite depressed. “I have to go, my class starts in a few minutes don’t want to miss out on my first day.” She walked off to find her class. It was probably a good idea.

I decided to start looking for the lecture room where I needed to be. As I walked up to the room I noticed Travis also walking up to the same room. As he placed his hand on the door handle to pull it open he lifted his head when he noticed me. “Well, this day just gets getting better.” He said pulling the door open and motioning for me to enter first.
