Chapter 9

"It's gonna be lit." Stephanie says with a smile. I can tell she's excited for the school dance because that's all she's been talking about this week. As for me, not so much.

"Oh my gosh! I know right?" Taylor agrees.

I groan at them and roll my eyes. They both notice and turn to me.

"Just because you don't have a date doesn't mean you can't go and mingle." Stephanie encourage me to go.

"Umm... I'd rather not. Mingling isn't one of my strong suits."

"Why not? You're gorgeous!" Taylor says.

I let out a non-lady like snort. "Says the girl with the awesome naturally curly hair and a beautiful flawless face."

"Oh please." Taylor blush.

"It's true." Stephanie and I agree causing her to smile wide.

"Sup girls, you guys going to the dance this Friday?" Zakk approach us, followed by Brent. We watch them as they both sit down across from us.

"Yup." Stephanie and Taylor say in unison.

"Nope." I say at the same time as them.

"Why?" Zakk and Brent say in unison.

"I don't have a date and plus, I don't want to go."

"Brent here doesn't have a date too. He's got no game." Zakk smirk.

"And you do?" Brent retorts.

"Well, I've got a date and you don't," Zakk brags.

Brent chuckle, "You're going with Betsey. Betsey, the same girl who's had a stalker crush on you since the fifth grade. After this, she's probably going to start calling herself Mrs. Bennett."

"Well, at least she fucking hot now. Have you seen her? Puberty did her good."

"Just don't come begging for my help," Brent warns him.

"Please. Player is my middle name. I'll just spend one night with her and dump her after."

I sneer at them in disgust. "You boys are jerks."

"You can't just play with a girl's feelings," Stephanie agrees.

Follow by Taylor, "What if we played around with your feelings? I bet you wouldn't last a day."

"Wanna bet?" Zakk remark.

"You betcha." Taylor retort.

It was starting to get a bit out of hand, so I try to change the subject, "Okay. Brent, how's life?"

That was the only thing I could think of at the time.

Brent stares at me in confusion but reply anyway sarcastically, "Living the dream."

"That's great!" I reply cheerfully.

"Oh..." Taylor looks between us like she knows something.

We all look at her. "Taylor? Care to share?" I question her.

"You guys are so adorable! You can go as each other's date!"

Brent and I let out a sarcastic laugh.

"You're fucking hilarious." I say.

"Really." Brent agrees.

I mean, Brent and me? Ha! Funny.

She looks at the both of us with a serious expression, "I was serious."

"As if! Me and him wouldn't last a night," I exclaim.

"Of course not. I only need 5 minutes," Brent says smirking. I stare at him in confusion for a few seconds before I finally get what he said.

"Perv." Him and his dirty mind.

He smiles satisfyingly, "Anytime." I roll my eyes at him.

"No wonder you can't get a date," I retort, smiling widely, proud of my comeback.

"No wonder you can't get a date too. You're always bad-mouthing people." My mouth opens slightly, surprised at his response.

"I can get a date!"

"Sure, you can," Brent mutter, not believing that I can.

"I can and I will!" I announce, immediately regretting it after.

"You go glen coco!" Stephanie cheer me on. I force a smile at her.

"And if you can't?" Brent challenge me.

"I wasn't being serious," I mutter. I really don't want to go to the dance. I hate dances. They suck. I mean, you spend an hour probably two to do your makeup then another hour to pick the perfect outfit and when you get there, you have to stand in those damn heels for hours. Yeah, no thank you.

"Coward," Brent mutter. I glare at him but don't reply.

The bell rings indicating the end of lunch. It's about damn time. I mean, I don't want to go to class but I don't want to stay here any longer and listen to Brent calling me a coward. We all get up and go our separate way.

-

"Hey, loser!" Brent approach me after school.

I stand up straight instead of leaning on the car. "Hey, asshole."

"Yup, that's me." Brent chuckle causing me to chuckle along with him.

We stand there next to each other in the parking lot, looking at other people walking pass us.

"So, you're really not going to the dance?" Brent asks. What is the big deal with this dance? It's just a dance.

"I will if you go," I reply, knowing fully well that he won't go.

"I can make you go." He smirks while arching an eyebrow.

"Really? And how exactly are you going to do that?"

As if on cue, a boy walks by and Brent stops him, "Hey, Adam!" He turns to us and smile at Brent saying hi back. I take this time to check him out. He's wearing a button up short sleeve plaid shirt with khaki shorts and has on a pair of glasses. He looks like a nerd.

"Avani wants to go to the dance with you but she's just too shy to ask." I turn my head to glare at Brent as soon as the words leave his mouth.

Oh no he didn't.

He replies with a victorious smirk. I narrow my eyes at him.

"Oh geez. Really? Well, would you like to go to the dance with me, Avani?" Adam ask me shyly, his cheeks blushing.

God dammit. He looks so happy. How can I say no?

I smile nervously hesitating to speak, "I would love to."

"Great, text me your address on Facebook and I'll pick you up at 6." He says excitedly and go on his way. When he is nowhere in sight, I punch Brent on the shoulder. He fakes a pain expression.

"I will seriously kill you," I threaten him. Ugh, now I have to go to the dance. I'm not the type to stood up a guy.

A girl who's in the same history class as me walks by and I decided to use this opportunity to get back at Brent.

"Hey Laura!" She turns to me and smile brightly, saying hi back.

"Brent wants to go to the dance with you but he's just too shy to ask. Ain't that right Brent?" I don't wait for a reply, "So what do you say?"

Laura send Brent a blushing look. "Of course. Yes." I smile slyly.

"Great! He'll pick you up at 6." I reply for Brent. Laura smiles and nods her head then walk away.

"You know it doesn't matter right?" Brent tells me.

"I can just stand her up," he says nonchalantly.

"No, you won't."

"Oh, but I will," he confirms.

I scoff. "Why are you such an asshole?" I ask the question of the century.

"Baby, I was born this way," he responds making me laugh.

"You did not just quote gaga."

"Oh, but I did."

I was about to response when Aiden cut me off, "Avani!" Brent and I turn to Aiden and Skye walking towards us. Aiden glaring at Brent.

"Well, I better go. Wouldn't want to beat your brother again." Brent sent me a quick smile before going his way.

Gosh, Aiden needs to stop being so protective. One day, I won't listen to anything he says anymore.
