Truth

Lenya was actually really sweet, she was a healer Nymph who lived in part of the supernatural realm where she was in charge of keeping the forest in best shape, Essence didn’t know there was more to the whole supernatural plane. She still had a lot to learn, she was grateful that Lenya even helped her. Mattais said they were close friends, but with the difference in needs of the realm only saw each other during a blood solstice or an emergency. Essence apologized for her rude behavior before but Lenya said it was nothing, brushing it off as her way of just trying to cope with things. There was no way for the woman to get angry at the young girl, she had a lot on her plate.

Essence and Mattais sat on a small pier that overlooked a vast lake. “You’ve been quiet for a while. What are you thinking?” Essence asked turning her head to look at Mattais who turned his own to meet her gaze. “Just things.” He said as she bumped him lightly. “Oh come on, you don’t have to keep things secret from me. It’s not like I’m going to freak out or anything.” She laughed but Mattais didn’t. Her smile fell as she noticed he hadn’t laughed along. “Okay now you’re freaking me out.” She stated with a nervous laugh taking his arm and lightly shaking it. “Mattais—“ she began but he sighed cutting her off. “There’s some things I need to tell you.” He said shaking his head.

Essence nodded urging him to continue. “You’ve heard of a past life yeah? How some humans have memories and recall things from the past.” She nodded again, her heart was beginning to race as he continued. “Every human has a past life, maybe even ‘lives’. You’ve had a past life plenty of them actually, each life different from the previous but all of them led you back to me. No matter how I removed myself from the equation the answer was always us. Lucifer not only doesn’t like that because he’s a narcissistic asshole but also he’s jealous. God purpose made you a Veni to keep us apart in the end, Him and Lucifer made a deal since Eden that the carrier of the soul would belong to Lucifer to prevent any war made upon heaven.” He explained carefully. Essence was fully intrigued, so that was why when he always around she felt safe and she always had moments of déjà vu when she was with him. “So like truce or treaty in a way?” She asked causing him to confirm. “More or less.” Essence pulled her gaze from him to the lake as she wrapped her arms around one of his own hugging it close. “Can you tell me more about my past life?” She questioned leaning against him with a small smile. “More about us.” She added.

Things were starting to make sense now about them two. Why it was him to watch over her and be ordered to protect her by Lucifer. Lucifer was a dick, he only put Mattais in this position because he knew how much it would hurt him in the end. “What do you wanna know?” He asked resting his hand on her thigh. “Anything, what was past me like? I’m assuming we were together? Dating I mean.” Essence said questioning it. Mattais chuckled humming in assurance. “We were, even married once.” He said looking down at her with soft crimson eyes, Essence had her own eyes closed taking in this moment making sure to store it in the back of her mind. “Married?” She laughed now looking up at him, her cheeks flushed noticing he was already looking at her.

“The most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen dressed in all white. You were otherworldly walking down that isle, big wide grin on your face. You weren’t nervous at all, it was like every life you spent with me prepared you for that very moment. All you knew was that you wanted me and I wanted you. Forever.” He said smiling to himself at the images of their wedding flashing in his mind. Than his eyes darkened making Essence pull away slightly. “What?” She questioned confused, worry lacing her tone. “But you never have forever Essence.” He whispered as he pushed her hair behind her ear. “I always lose you in the end, no matter what. Death always comes for you, leaving me heart broken each time.” Mattais sighed pulling his arm from her grasp and resting it next to her as they indulged in each other’s presence.

Essence bit her lip, his hand still playing with the short strands of hair that framed her face. “Why- why can’t we be together forever? Isn’t there some way?” She questioned as she turned to face him full on. “I’ve always been a demon and you’ve always been a mortal. There’s really no way for us to be together forever, you would have to be granted eternal life but anyone who has the soul inside them doesn’t last long after it’s removed. There’s no happy ending for us sweet one.” He explained sadly, a deep sadness washing over the female making her eyes water. Mattais pulled her into his chest hugging her gently still careful of her healing body. “It’s not fair.” She sniffled slumping against him. “Nothing ever is.”
