“My purse, my person, my extremest means, lie all unlocked to your occasions.” — The Merchant of Venice (Act I, Scene I)
After that awful morning ordeal, he headed back to the police station when the clock struck 6 in the evening. He hadn’t eaten all day, and he wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone either.
When he came down to the police station, people knew that something was wrong. His eyes looked droopy, his clothes all unironed, his hair a complete mess. The last time when he’d been like this was when his ex wife Elena left him for good. The divorce drained him emotionally.
Walsh was informed that his best friend cum colleague was in the office, and he got up from his table at once, making a run to meet him. And what he saw, wasn’t actually what he was expecting. He saw Jase in his desk, and he wished he hadn’t seen him in that state at all.
“Coffee, Jase?” He looked at the cop, who just mumbled a yes. Ray had sensed that something was really wrong. He hadn’t seen Klein that dejected in quite a few years, he always managed to pick his shit up together.
“Okay, good. Because I have some update on the Xavier issue that we have at hand, yes.” He quickly added, after which Klein perked up and nodded.
“Okay, so I found out why he was expelled.” Ray mused, placing the coffee cup on Klein’s desk, when his phone suddenly rang. Elena’s name flashed on the screen, and he knew that he had to take it.
“Excuse me, Ray. I’ll be right back.” He murmured, getting up from his chair to receive the call. He walked outside the building complex, leaning against the wall, as he swiped the green button up.
“Jase, I have been wanting to talk to you, like forever. You seem busy though.” Her cheerful voice came across from the other end of the phone, which made Klein smile a bit.
“I am, yes, Elena. But, what did you want to talk about?” He sounded a bit worn off and skeptical; a tone which struck odd to Elena.
“Are you okay, Jase? Everything fine?” Her concerned voice made him sigh. He remembered how good those days used to be when he came home all worked up and tired, and she was always ready to give his shoulders and back a massage.
“Jase?”
“Ah, yes. Just some regular workload. Nothing that working late shifts and finishing the shit off won’t cure.” He stated, finding a faint smile on his face.
“You work too much. How about we meet at Rossario’s, on Sunday? I have a great deal to talk about, to you. So much had happened recently.”
“Sunday sounds cool. Okay with that. I look forward to meeting you. Bye, Elena.” He bit his lip, as she said her goodbyes and hung up on him.
He took in a deep breath, as he rummaged out Winter’s number from his contact list. He called him, wanting to apologise but that call got instantly directed to the voice mail.
“Hello, this is Xavier Winter, CEO of Winter Corp. If you have an important message, drop it here or contact me with my business email. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.” And the call ended. Jase massaged his forehead, knowing that Winter wouldn’t receive any call from him.
He couldn’t help but feel the guilt and rejection pool in his stomach as he headed towards the building again. Once he was seated at his desk, Walsh came in again, taking a chair to sit facing him.
“Yes, so I believe that I was telling you that we found out the reason behind Xavier’s expulsion from the med school.” Ray said, looking at Klein for a response.
“Yes, that. What did you find, Ray?” He replied in a glum tone. After all, he’d fucked shit up with Winter for some silly assumption of his.
“You were right, he may be the killer, Klein. The only reason why he was expelled was because he tried to stab one of his batch mates with a scalpel after they got in a very bad brawl. Instead of stabbing him on the stomach, he slashed his arm instead, because of the other person’s tremendous efforts to defend himself. This is likely that he killed his wife.”
