“Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” — Macbeth (Act V, Scene V)
The previous night had been a living nightmare for Klein. He didn’t sleep nor did he eat. He looked like a disastrous mess, and had been ignoring calls all day. But, he didn’t cancel his plan of meeting Elena. She owed him answers, in fact, a lot of them.
After an hour or so, he was infront of the café they were supposed to meet at. He had been glancing at his wrist watch every five seconds, running out of patience. It was not a ‘meet-and-greet’ for him, rather it was an interrogation period, which is why he was here.
Elena stepped down from a cab, spotting her ex husband across the road. She was embarrased, and flustered red. In no time at all, she had crossed the road and was standing infront of Jase. She was wearing a blue maxi dress which hugged her body and flaunted her lush curves. Her silky brown hair cascaded down to her back, making her look all so sexy.
She furrowed her eyebrows as she studied the man infront of her. That guy sure didn’t look like the man she was supposed to meet. Klein looked horrible. His eyes were puffy and red, his denim shirt was unironed, his jeans creased and wrinkled. His hair was not combed or styled, rather it was a careless tousle. There was no reason that his condition would be due to her getting caught with Winter in a sexual act, right?
She'd hug him whenever they met, but, he didn’t exactly seem to be in the mood. Without even a smile, Klein ushered her in the café, as they sat across eachother, concerned. The waiter took the order of two frappuccinos, and scooted away.
“What did you tell about me to Xavier Winter, Elena Blake?” His tone was dead serious, rather low and dangerous. The woman's eyebrows shot up in surprise; she didn’t expect this. Futhermore, he used her full name. That wasn’t a good sign at all.
“What are you talking about? We were just fucking.” She quickly muttered, looking at the large coffee cup on the table. She heard Klein exhale, as he placed his hands on the table. She saw him slightly wince at the word ‘fucking’, but made nothing of it.
“I won't repeat this for a lifetime. What did you tell about me to Xavier Winter?” He announced, sounding scarier the second time. Elena swallowed. But this still, couldn’t be the reason of him looking that bad, or would it?
“He came to my office, to search up some files about you. You are always on the news, and well, we are newsreporters. Certainly all files are confedential, but he is Xavier Winters. Who would even refuse him? He could sue our whole company.” She glanced at him, looking quite sincere. On any other day, Jase would've been mature and would’ve seen the reason of her spilling the info, but, not today.
“Elena, so, you would just present my file to anyone with power and money, who asked you to do so? He fucked his way into this, didn’t he?” His voice was a low growl, and that tone sent shivers up Elena's. She was very familiar with that tone, and the consequences too. Her nervous eyes wavered from her abandoned coffee cup, to the surroundings and fixed them back on her ex husband.
“It’s not like that, Jase. He was so insistent, and…we had no other option. Trust me, I wouldn’t have done that if I had an alternate choice.” She cast her eyes down, looking ashamed and apologetic of her doing. She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, looking down at her shuffling feet.
“Did I hear ‘trust me’, from you, Elena Blake?” He scoffed at the spot, almost guffawing, before crossing his arms over his chest. This was going in some other direction.
“Where was this trust factor when you fucked my best friend when I was away at work?” He sneered, poison dripping from every word he uttered, as Elena gasped. The few people in the café had the same reaction as hers.
“What the hell, Jase? What does this have to do with anything!?” She shrieked, getting defensive at being exposed like that. The cop raised his eyebrow, smirking.
“Feels good, doesn’t it? Being exposed like that? Get how I felt?” He inched closer to her, bringing his face near Elena's, who was shocked at how insenstive he had become. He still couldn't banish the images from the previous night flashing in his head. He couldn’t let her know why he was getting so malevolent and passive about this issue. But clearly, she'd struck a nerve there.
“This is not the same, Jase Klein!” Her voice rose up, as the half shouted scream echoed in the room.
“Atleast see yourself for the nasty backstabbing wanker you actually are. So, tuck your tail between your legs and run like a little fucking bitch you are. You can go and fuck yourself.” He slammed his hands on the table, as she hastily stood up, tears welling up in her eyes before storming out.
