Endless love

Mason's P.O.V.

I took the last bottle of wine I had left and sat down on the stairs in front of my house. Although there was nothing in the house except walls still everything inside reminded me of Naomi and I couldn't stand being alone in there.

The bottle was already open so I just took a big sip out of it, for as long as I was able to drink without taking a breath. This might help me forget. At least for now, until she returns to Atlanta and everything will be the same. It will be the same boring, lonely life.

After Naomi left I didn't bother to close the gates again. Nobody wants to come here anyways... I drifted away in my mind at unknowingly fell asleep in front of the house.

It seemed like just a second passed before I felt someone shaking me.

"Wake up! Mason, wake up! Are you alright?"

"What?" I opened my eyes and saw Naomi. I screamed and pushed my self back with my hands on the tiles.

"Mason, are you alight?" She repeated.

"Stay where you are! Don't come any closer."

"What wrong with you? What happened?"

"I know I'm imagining things. It can't be you. I mean, it can't be Naomi. Get away!"

Naomi laughed. Or whatever that thing in front of me was. She sure sounded like Naomi. I missed that laugh.

"What are you talking about? It's me."

"No way. Did I die? Maybe I drank too much. I knew that wine wasn't good..."

"You're not dead, Mason. Do you see me dancing around?"

"No."

"Than that means you're not dead. Come on, let me help you get up." She gave me a hand.

"No. I wanna sit here. I'm too miserable to even get up."

"Fine." She took a seat next to me.

I looked at her unable to believe this was true and that we were actually sitting together on the tiles in front of my empty house.

"Don't stare at me. It's freaking me out." She said while looking at something in the distance.

"Sorry. But if it really is you... I don't get it. Why?"

"I couldn't leave you alone here. I know I'm gonna regret it, and probably sooner than I think. But here I am."

"Wow, I..." I was speechless. There was no way my brain was able to process this. I had no money, I had no character she could get in love with. What in the world made her come back here?

I broke. I haven't cried in years. I haven't cried when my son was born, even after when my daughter was born, I haven't cried when Naomi left me, not even when I've lost everything I had. But when I saw how unselfish she is... And knowing she had nothing to get from me in return. That is when I broke down in pieces.

"Mason..." She must've felt bad, even though I'm the one who was supposed to feel that way.

"I'm sorry, Naomi. I'm sorry for everything. You've been through a lot because of me. I wish you could forgive me, but I know that requires amount of strength that is impossible for a human being to have."

"I'm not gonna forgive you, Mason."

"I understand that."

"The reason I'm not gonna forgive you is because I already have. You don't need me to forgive you. God can only forgive you."

"But I can't forgive myself."

She kissed me on the cheek.

"What's that for?"

"Sorry. When I see a baby crying I just have to kiss her."

"Hey..." What happened to her in Atlanta? She's become so mean...

"Just kidding." She laughed. "Sorry, but I have to leave now." She stood up.

"Oh, that means my luck is short-lived. But I can't complain. At least there's finally some luck in my life..."

"Promise you'll take care of yourself."

I nodded my head so I wouldn't have to actually say the words. It would be a too big commitment.

"Give me that." She showed it to the bottle next to my hand. I picked it up and gave it to her, although unwillingly.

"There. Now I can be sure you're gonna be..." Her phone rang and she took it from her pocket to answer it. "Hello, mom?"

"Is that your mom?" I whispered. She nodded her head while showing me to calm down with her hand. "Tell her you won't come home."

"Listen, mom, I'm with Mason right now."

"With Mason?!" I'm not sure if Naomi was aware that I was able to hear what her mother was saying.

"Yeah, would it be okay if I stayed here for the night?"

"Girl, you're 27 years old. Don't even think about coming back!" Naomi took a deep breath and nodded to me. "Michael, she's back with Mason. Yeah, I can't believe it either." Her mom hung up.

"Um, alright mom. Yeah, I'll say hi to him for you. Okay, thanks, bye! Love you too!" She put her phone back into her pocket. "My mom says hi."

"So now they know who you're with and they won't worry about you."

"Yeah. How bad is this wine anyways?" She sat back and pushed herself closer to me.

"Very bad."

She took a sip of if. "Ugh, you're right."

"Told you."

"Do you want some?"

"Hell yeah." I took the bottle.

"It's kinda cold here, isn't it?"

"Do you want us to come inside?"

"No."

I carefully hugged her.

"Wait, what time is it?"

"It's almost 12. Why?"

"You'll see in a few seconds."

"Why? What do you mean?"

"Just wait. Three, two, one, and go." I kept watching the watch on my hand.

Suddenly we've heard someone playing the guitar in the backyard right to my house.

"What's that? Did you hire someone?"

"It's my neighbor. He's old, you don't know him. He moved in after you've left. He does this every night?"

"Plays the guitar at midnight?"

"Yeah. One time I called the police but he apologized to me and told me he does it for his late wife. Apparently this was her favorite song and she died right at midnight but he wasn't there with her. He does this to pay her back for whatever she has done for him."

"Wow... That's so romantic."

"It's crazier if you ask me."

"Oh, Mason... And you called the police on the poor guy. You're so senseless." She laughed probably imagining how it all happened.

"What was I supposed to do?"

"I can see you still got that watch... I've never seen you take it off."

"Yeah, well... This is the watch I was wearing the day you came into my office looking for a job. The day I met you was the happiest day of my life. I sold all the rest."

She put her head on my shoulder.

"I feel like the time hasn't passed. I feel like it's the day of our wedding. But now I don't feel scared of you."

"You don't?" I smiled.

"Well... Not that much." She laughed. I loved just casually sitting here with her and laughing at all the things we've been through like we were some kind of an old married couple.

"I see..."

"Wait, why did he stop playing?"

"I don't know. He usually plays for at least half an hour. Maybe he died."

"Oh, stop it Mason. Hey, grandpa!" She stood up and went to the fence but was too small to see over it. She's too cute.

"Naomi, don't do that. I think you've had too much wine."

"Hello, Santa! Can you play me a song? Please..."

I had to get up and try to talk her out of whatever she was doing.

"Please, Naomi... You're humiliating yourself. You'll feel so sorry for this tomorrow."

"No, I just wanna say something to Santa. Where is he? Can you please play Endless love for me? Do you know that song?"

"Come on, Naomi... Please..."

The old guy actually started playing it. I didn't know the song but it was good.

"Yass! Thanks, Santa!" I had no idea where she got Santa from.

"May I ask you for a dance?" I offered her my hand. She took it without any doubt.

"It will be my pleasure."

We danced the night away before crashing on the grass and falling asleep next to each other. Nobody knew about what happened today except for the stars.
