I went to Lisa's house that same day. I figured there is no need to delay what I want to do. I've done that a lot in my life and it never turned out how I wanted it to be.
I took a taxi because I didn't have a car. While Mason and I were in the middle of our divorce last year I said I won't take any of his money. Alex didn't like that at all and used that as an extra reason to go on my nerves.
While climbing the stairs to her front door I heard someone arguing inside. I recognized Lisa's voice but I wasn't able to say who that other person was. I only knew it wasn't Mason.
"We agreed you'll give me half of the money!" I heard when I stood in front of the door. The voice was definitely male.
"I said I need time! Things haven't worked out the way I planned."
"I don't care! I want my money! You were supposed to give it to me but you took it to yourself and spent it alone!"
"Ugh, your brother needed it. He made me give him the money."
"I don't care if he put a gun to your head! You shouldn't do it! God, you're so weak!"
"But... He needed it. That money means nothing to you anyways."
I saw a gardener down at the lawn looking at what I was doing so I decided to come inside because the door was already halfway open.
I went straight to her living room and Lisa was surprised to see me like she thought I was dead, but also angry at me for coming in without even knocking.
"Hey... I wanted to..."
"Oh, hello!" In another corner of the room stood a man I didn't recognize at first. It was Liam, now he looked even better standing up and his smile was blinding. He held a glass of whiskey and I have just noticed he had an earring in his right ear. "I remember you. You're that girl from the train, right?"
"Yeah, I am." I felt like I began to blush. I wanted to avoid that by any cost.
"What the hell are you doing in my house?" Lisa crossed her arms. She was not happy to see me. But I didn't expect her to be either way...
"I... I came to see him. Jacob. Please, Lisa. It would mean so much to me."
"No way! You're not see my son! Ever. I told you a million times that you are NOT his mother. But I can see you have a hard time realizing that. Well it's fine with me. You can come here every day if you want but you're not gonna see Jacob. So my advice to you is to give up straight away."
"But please... Just for a few minutes."
"No. What are you even trying to accomplish by coming here? You don't care about my son. You wanted to see Mason."
"Mason?" Liam was shocked and looked at me in a weird way like being attached to Mason in any way would make me a special kind of person. Probably in a bad way.
"Don't you know who she is?" Lisa looked surprised.
"Yeah, we've met just today at the train."
"She's Mason's ex-wife."
Liam seemed heartbroken when she said that. He looked at me again like he was looking for a sign on me that would prove that.
"Is that true?"
"Yes." I don't know why I answered that question. He was just a stranger to me but something about him made me capable of opening up my entire soul to him. He just needed to say a word.
"I've heard he had a wife. And I heard when he got a divorce. But none of that surprised me as much as the fact I have actually met you."
"It must be in your blood." Lisa said.
"I don't know what my brother was thinking when he let go of such a gem." I started to get uncomfortable with the way he was checking me out.
"You're Mason's brother?" It really is a small world.
"Yep. Unfortunately. But there's nothing I can do to change that." He shrugged his shoulders.
"But how is that possible? You seem so... Normal." I was a second away from saying hot. My mind was in clouds.
He laughed at that. I'm glad he did because he could've been very insulted by that.
"Well, we're not all crazy in the family. Someone has to be normal too."
"Can you both just leave my house and go elsewhere to talk? I would really appreciate that." Lisa was impatient and couldn't stand listening to us talk without her being in the center of attention.
"I am actually late for a meeting so I gotta run!" He cheeked his watch showing a glimpse of his dark hairy hands. "But you two have fun. If that's possible..." He waved at us before leaving.
Now Lisa walked to the couch and sat down. I believe she waited for a moment like this ever since she first saw me. There was no smile on her face but I knew she was more than satisfied.
"I would offer you to sit down, but I just had all of my furniture cleaned. Allowing rats to use it would be unsanitary."
"I'm fine standing."
"Alright... You've changed a lot since I last saw you. What is that you're wearing? It looks cheap and hideous."
"It's certainly better than that uniform you used to wear all the time at the villa. And maybe this isn't expensive but I earned money for it myself. I wasn't renting my uterus like some of us have..."
"You know what?!" She was about to get up and probably fight me, but something has calmed her down again. "Ugh, you're not even worth it. I feel sorry for you."
"You're not the first one to tell me that today. I'll leave as soon as you let me see Jacob. I didn't come here to give you an order to let me see him. I'm asking you as a mother..."
"Huh! This is great! Listen, I have more important things to do. Some of us can't afford to lose time like you."
"Alright then. Where is Mason?"
"What do you care where's Mason? You're the one that left him in the first place."
"If you don't let me see Jacob I'm sure he will. I'll ask Mason."
"You're losing your time. Mason is not here."
"Okay. When is he coming back?"
"Never. God, you're so annoying."
"Why? What happened?"
"Haven't you heard? Wow, have you been living under a rock for the past year? He lost everything. His company, his money... That of course includes me too."
"What? How is that possible?"
"What do I know? He wasn't really happy when you left. I think you're the reason for that. It didn't happen all at once, but it all started the day you left."
"I... I didn't want to. How can I be the reason? I didn't do anything."
"Congrats, Naomi. You have managed to destroy something in just a few months that his family was building for decades. That requires some skill. I should be afraid of you..."
"Well where does he live now?"
"He lives where he used to live. His mother bought that house so they couldn't take that away from him. But of course now he can no longer afford to hire all of his stuff. He's all alone in that big villa. Oh God, I wonder if he's thinking of the worst..." She put both of her hands on her cheeks.
"I'm so sorry..."
"Are you actually apologizing to me right now? What do I have to do with it? As you can see, nobody was able to take anything from me. Now get lost already. I can't even stand looking at you."
Thankfully Lisa's mother has come inside just when I was about to leave.
"Oh, God, is that you, Naomi?" I didn't expect such a warm welcome from her. How could someone so honest and without a drop of evil in her give birth to someone like Lisa?
She put the groceries down on the floor and hugged me. Perhaps Mason wasn't able to hire maids anymore but at least he wasn't making his mother do everything for him so he could save money.
"My dear, when did you come back?"
"This morning."
"I'm so glad to see you. How are things going between you and Alex?"
"Oh, we broke up a long time ago. It just didn't work out."
Lisa laughed when she heard that. I have even forgotten she was still with us in the room. "I wonder why!"
"Lisa, please..." Her mother looked embarrassed because of her.
"What? Did I say something wrong?"
"Ugh, don't take her seriously."
"Mom, I'm sitting right here. I can hear you talking about me."
"It's okay. But I came here only to see Jacob. Lisa doesn't allow that so I guess I will go now... I don't want to bother you anymore."
"What? Are you kidding me?" Lisa stood up. "Mom, can't you see she's just using you! She knows you'll never say no to her."
"And why would I? I see no harm in her seeing a child she was raising. Honestly, Lisa, from the three of us you're the one who has been his mother the least."
"I just... How can you even say that?"
"Come with me, sweetie. He's in his room." She led me to Jacob's room.
"Okay, now we have to be quiet because he's probably sleeping."
I nodded my head, taking a deep breath before she opened the door. Nothing in this world would stop me from smiling at that moment.
When she opened the door we saw a small baby standing in his white crib chewing a toy. I wasn't able to recognize him at all. He grew so much and I was now able to see some similarities between him and Mason.
"Oh my God..." I approached the crib. "I can't believe this is real."
"I'll leave you alone with him."
"Thank you." I turned around to look at her. "Thank you so much."
"You're welcome, dear." She closed the door. Now this was the proof that angels walk among us every day.
"Hey, little guy. What are you smiling about?" He was shaking the hand he held a toy in and threw it on the floor. I was glad he didn't start crying to get it back.
"You've grown so much. Do you recognize me? Is that why you're smiling?"
Lisa came inside.
"Okay, that's enough. Now please leave."
"Alright, Lisa. I'll leave. There's no need for you to get upset."
"I'm not. But if you dare to come here again, and take advantage of my mother's good nature, I swear I will have no mercy!"
"Fine. I won't come here again. I know that if it was up to you I would never get to see Jacob, but still... Thank you."
"Yeah, yeah... Just leave already." She rolled her eyes.
"Goodbye Lisa."
"Bye. Forever I hope..."
