Chapter 7

Mark is totally a different person, he is very arrogant and not warm at all. So he has been pretending all along. If that is the case, who is he? Is he one of the guys she had to deal with in the past? She kept quiet not knowing what is going to happen next. All she could hear is the rocky road that they were driving on. She could see trees hanging on the sideway brushing on their car. The silence was so unbearable that she wanted to shout.

Mark stopped on a remote area just outside a cabin that looked as if it had been abandoned for a very long time. Surprisingly when they entered inside it was well kept and neat. If this is where they were going to live it didn’t give her a good vibe at all. All her years as a police woman have taught her to sense things on the first contact

He didn’t talk much but now that they have arrived at their destination, all he could say was

“This will be your room and I will be staying in the next room. I don’t like people entering my room without permission so be warned. I don’t like trouble.”

Here she thought that married people sleep together and do all those foolish things that people in love does. While she was still thinking, he interrupted her thoughts “go to your room and lock yourself inside. I don’t want to keep looking at your face. I feel disgusted “

Ana didn’t sleep that night. She was warned by everybody. Now she was nowhere, afraid and unsure who the man she married is. How can a Secret agent be this foolish? They are supposed to avoid danger more than anyone else in the world. She decided to give him time to rest, maybe he is just tired or had a bad day.

In the morning, Ana went to open the tap so she could have her morning bath but there was no water.

She knocked on his door and let herself in when there was no answer .Mark stared at her with so much displeasure that she couldn’t utter a word.

“How can I help you Ana?” Now she is being called by her name, not recently she was his darling.

Seeing that she was quietly standing on the entrance of his room, he lost his temper and shouted

“Please speak I don’t have time for useless talk.”

“It’s just that I can’t find water” Ana said.

“You are not even ashamed of telling me that” he started shouting again.

“Go outside and look for water and never again will you disturb my peace this early in the morning.”

Ana felt warm tears on her eyes, but on her training she was taught to endure a lot of difficult situations so this will not be an exception.

When she went outside, every corner of the compound was being guarded and she knew that she was in trouble. All she had to do was obey them may be she will come out of this situation alive.

Right then she spotted a well. All her life, she has never seen a well and it terrified her to look down the hole. She felt dizzy from looking down the water. She remembered she has not had anything to eat from yesterday. Things had become worse and she wondered how she is going to survive animosity from the person who claimed to be in love with her.

She decided to sit on the edge of the well for a while to rest. To her surprise she heard Mark’s footsteps. He was standing in front of her with strange and distance look. All he said is “let me help you draw some water. Go back to the house I will be there soon.” Ana felt a sigh of relief run through her body.

“I don’t want you to end up dead in the well, right now I do not need trouble with the law”

Ana asked him “Who are you?”

“Who gave you permission to talk to me? Go back to the house and find something to do with your time.” He shouted. Lately it seemed that he had been possessed by some unknown spirits. All he liked to do was shouting at her with no reason at all. The guy who was nice to her was gone and buried. Oh how she missed Nick at this moment. He was a pain in the ass but she knew that he would have never treated her like that.

“I need answers Mark, you have changed all of a sudden, what wrong have I done to you? Please am begging you to tell me. You know I care about you very much. Please don’t treat me like this “Ana begged

“Are you still talking to me?” He yelled while looking at her with dark eyes that are ready to attack at the slightest provocation.

Ana immediately turned and left feeling really shaken. She didn’t know what to do next. All she could think about is what wrong did she do?

After having her bath and feeling refreshed, she swore never to talk to Mark unless she had been asked to. She was tired of the sudden hatred towards her. She only wanted a good man by her side and it seemed that she had messed up so bad this time.

Ana went to the kitchen. There were plenty of food to her surprise, at least she will not be starving.

She ate only one banana and went back to her room. Immediately she realized she had no phone. She had been asked to put it aside during the ceremony but she forgot to take it.

Mark was busy reading a book and she knew if she talked, he will not be pleased with her. So she just sat staring at nothing. His phone rang and immediately he left the room and went outside .The conversation on the phone took so long you could guess that the matter was very important to him.

When he came back he didn’t talk to her instead he took a bottle of vodka and started drinking.

Ana rose slowly and went to her room. She has had enough for today, she did not feel like eating .All she wanted that moment was a hot bath to relax her a little bit. Immediately she entered the bathroom, she heard her door close and Mark was holding the bathroom door open. He smelled of alcohol and she wondered what he was up to.

He came closer and started caressing her body. She thought to herself after treating her badly, he now wants to have sex. All sort of things ran through her mind, would he be capable of raping her? Why would a man treat somebody heartlessly and then comes back to satisfy his sexual urges?

She asked him with a hoarse voice” What are you doing? ”

“What kind of a question is this? You are my wife and right now I need you to please me”

He grabbed her and threw her on the bed .He was forcing himself on her. The least he could have done was to be gentle. No matter how much Ana pleaded with him to let go. He was even more determined to have her already.

“Mark let go. Not like this please. “

He did not listen to her and went ahead to force himself on her. Ana was overwhelmed by his strength and she stopped struggle and let him have his way.

Tears of pain rolled down her cheeks and when he was done he pulled up his pants and left the room without looking back.

That day he didn’t talk to her, he was so cold to her that she went to sob silently in her room. All the advices she had been given by her friends started ringing in her mind. This was a very messy situation, whatever is going on she will find out soon.

To her greatest surprise, that evening a guest came to see her and she thought “who the hell knew where she was?” would the person be willing to save her from this situation? But to her greatest surprise when the door opened it was none other than Mike, the one and only brother of Mark.

“Well my little brother I see you have done a good job, I am very proud of you.”

Ana was so lost, “what is going on here?” She asked.

“I have brought you a wedding gift. Congratulations! You deserve every bit of it.” He said sarcastically while looking at her with contempt in his eyes. Now that he was looking at her he hated her even more.

“Quit wasting my time. What do you want?” Ana snarled

Mike just laughed loudly and started narrating about a case which she was involved with.

“Once upon a time there was a wealthy family living in Mombasa. Their sources of wealth came from investments in real estate which took several years to build. Then came a secret agent officer who destroyed their lives .They were called the Richards, remember them Ana?”

“Yes, how could I forget something I was a part of? But I now I get the picture well. You both want revenge on me. You have succeeded because you have attacked me using one of my weakest tools.

What you should know is that your father was a criminal, who was laundering money belonging to innocent people all over the world. He was a wanted person worldwide. I only did my job of investigating his activities which brought him to justice and all those people he wronged were compensated. So tell me, where did I wrong you both? Please explain to me in a way that I can understand properly because lately I have been under so much pressure this came to me with no surprise at all.”

Mark was quiet and cold all the time and when he spoke he said “You made us become criminals and because of that you will pay dearly. What you have gone through now is just the beginning. By looking at you I feel disgusted I can’t even imagine how I was able to pretend all this while when all I wanted was to strangle the life out of you.”

“You don’t say Mark, I am very sorry I tried to fall in love with you. I have no regrets at all .It’s unfortunate that you failed to recognize how much I care about you despite all this .No one will ever care about you like this.”

“Don’t you dare lie to my face like that? Do you think I am stupid? I know perfectly well that you are deeply in love with Nick, That poker face.”

Her eyes widened and her mouth trembled “so you have been spying on me all this time? What kind of a joke is this? I thought that I was the only spy around”

“You are surprised? So don’t bring that bullshit that you care about me. I know that I am your rebound love. But I don’t care because the feeling is mutual. I don’t even love you.”

“Enough brother, don’t get yourself overworked for nothing. She doesn’t deserve it.”
