Chapter 5

They agreed to stay low because according to the police they were keeping Mark under their surveillance not knowing that they are both dangerous people with no heart. Fooling Ana was the most important mission of their life, now there is no mercy. Mark will catch a Plane back to Kenya to put the second phase of their plan in action.

It was on a Sunday morning, when Ana got a call from Mark that he was on his way back and she should come and pick him at the Jomo Kenyatta international airport. With that call she realized that she had missed him and he was the distraction she needed to forget Nick.

Nick has not talked to her for days and she had long decided to move on and her best choice was Mark. She was going to do everything in her power to be happy. Mark wasn’t her type but he was still handsome and he treated her better.

While driving to the airport, the traffic was stalling as usual but she managed to be there on time. By the time she had parked her car, she saw Mark with a small suitcase. He was wearing Dark sun glasses, a white shirt and dark green pants. He looked so handsome, she ran as fast as she never had to and only stopped when he picked her in to his arms and they embraced each other for couple of seconds that felt like an eternity.

“I missed you so much my darling. How have you been?” He asked.

“Been around doing the usual, catching bad guys, but I couldn’t live without seeing you” She replied without meaning to, but she saw Mark amused with what she said. However how much she was still holding on to Nick she was happy to be giving herself a chance with someone else. Her only hope was that this man will treat her well the way she deserves.

“It’s been hard especially because my bosses have been pressuring me about your brother’s case, but let’s not talk about that. Come on lets go home, I have a surprise for you.”

“You don’t say” Mark mocked her sarcastically, “I also have a surprise for you. By the time I am finished with you, you will never be willing to let me go. I will love it for you to stick to me like a superglue.

Ana laughed at the idea and she held on to his arm tightly.

They got in to Ana’s car and drove home together. The moment Mark entered the house, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the house was well decorated it seems that apart from being a spy she also has an eye for good things. The interior design was so amazing you just lose yourself staring at the beautiful decorations.

“Feel at home Mark, I will be back in a moment let me prepare something for us to eat.”

Ana thought to herself, how odd it is to be responsible for someone else, all along she had been alone ,she had to cook ,wash and even sleep by herself but suddenly she had someone to share with.

It was a good feeling but right now she didn’t know what direction her life is headed.

Her career is very complicated and she would not like to drag another person’s life with her. Again she felt that she is starting to really care about Mark.

In about 30 minutes Mark smelled an aroma of rice and chicken coming from the kitchen. It is a delicacy enjoyed by most Kenyans.

When he tasted the food it was impossible to stop eating. The food was so good until he found himself asking loudly when the last time he eat that well cooked meal was. Ana couldn’t help but smile sweetly she gave him a kiss on the cheeks and whispered” that was my surprise to you. Did you like it?”

“Sure I did no doubt about that.”

He helped her clear the dirty dishes from the dining table and cleaned them. She felt so comfortable and happy besides him. This is the kind of life she has been yearning for all this while. Loneliness has become her companion most of her adult life which was a thing she had never been proud of.

At least at her work place she had colleagues to socialize with but when she is at home it becomes very lonely and most of the time she is being consumed by the assignment she has been given.

She still remembers how unwilling she was to take Richards case. She was still new but Nick had made sure to bully her to take the case. He said it was a perfect case for her to become known and respected since it was being followed globally. It turned out that he was right because after handling it successfully so many opportunities came knocking at her door. She was the favourite of the many officers she worked with. Each one of them wanted to partner with her.

On the other hand Mark couldn’t care less about her, he wasn’t even in love with her. All that was in his mind was to go through with the revenge.

Suddenly he took her hands and asked “will you marry me?” Ana was so surprised, she couldn’t speak, and her mouth remained open without saying anything. She never pictured what will happen when the man of her dreams proposes to her.

It is unfortunate that today it was not the man of her dreams but someone she considers perfect to start over with. She was ready to accept and learn to love him little by little .In her heart she knew it will be possible to fall in love with him, since he was also handsome and charming.

“Come on darling, please say something am waiting for your response,” The woman was hesitating, but why when he thought that he had managed to convince her of his fake love.

“Of cause, I will marry you” She hugged him so tightly that he thought she will never let go.”

“Hey take it easy on me, I thought you will say no. You service people never give in to marriage so easily. So what is on that beautiful mind of yours?” he teased with a charming smile on his face

“It’s like this Mark, nothing you say will make me unhappy today, to hell with my career. I have waited for this moment for a very long time and now that it’s knocking on my door, no way will I turn it down.

I know there will be so many challenges but together you and me we can overcome them.”

“Come here” he kissed her lightly on the mouth just to reassure her.

”That is the spirit my darling. So start all the necessary arrangements for the wedding, money will not be a problem. You will have the wedding of your dreams. You make me so happy Ana, I hope you know that.”

Mark was really happy inside not because he was eager to marry her but because his revenge was right on track. He couldn’t care less about her or if she was happy with him or not.

“I am confident we will make a beautiful life for ourselves. Do you hear me?”

“Yes darling” Ana said lost in her very own thoughts. The wedding proposal clearly has come as a surprise to her, never in her wildest dreams did she think that someone could propose after meeting her only for a short time.

“What are you thinking about Ana? Do you want to change your mind on marrying me? Remember you cannot go back on your words. “

“How can I darling? You have been so nice to me and I know that as time goes by we will learn to appreciate and love each other more.”

Everybody warned Ana About marrying Mark. But as always a woman who has made a decision will never listen to the advices given by concerned friends. They said it was too soon and that she should take a little time to know him better. At work place she was told that if she marries Mark then she should consider herself fired since that will interfere with her investigations on his brother. She chose to quit without hesitation.

On the last day at work, Nick pleaded with her to reconsider her decision because she is one of the best detectives on board and the agency still needs her services. When she refused, he told her that in future if she ever wanted to come back she is free and will be welcomed. That meant so much to her, after all Nick was not as bad as she thought. She promised to stay in touch.

Nick has tolerated all this nonsense about marriage. But he decided that he was not going to stand on the way of her happiness. His heart was torn in to pieces the moment he learnt about Ana and Mark. He knew that this time he has lost her forever.

However he just wanted to spend one last time with her so he invited her for dinner. He needed to look at her for the very last time and keep only sweet memories of her in his heart. So he gathered all the courage he needed to ask her out.

“Ana have I ever taken you for a dinner? Please consider this as my invitation. I would like to say goodbye to you in a proper way. I know you are getting married very soon, for that reason please do not turn me away.”

He looked at her with those deep brown eyes, signaling to her that he needed to say goodbye. Ana hugged his arm saying. “Of cause Boss, it will be my pleasure. You know I owe all this to you and I regard you in a high place. I will definitely eat my last dinner with you.”

Nick smelled her perfumed which lately has become his addiction since she slept on his pillow the last time she went to his house. He touched her cheeks lovingly and pinched her nose while saying” I didn’t expect less from you”

“Have I ever told you how beautiful you are? I look at your green eyes and I feel consumed by your sweetness and your blonde hair is a treasure I haven’t seen anywhere else.”

“Don’t flatter me my boss, I will see you in the evening at 7.00 PM” He didn’t want to let go, he held on to her hands tightly until Ana looked at him sternly. He let her go with a bitter sweet smile.

When Ana reached home she kept picturing in her mind Nick’s behavior just a while ago. Could it be that he is starting to have some feelings towards her? No it cannot be, all this while he didn’t give her attention and now that she has decided to marry Mark, and he wants to confuse her. She will not allow that to happen. She gave Mark her word and she will keep it no matter what.

She quickly took a bath and while deciding on what to wear, her thoughts were on Nick.

She finally put on a white figure hugging dress with a slit on the side. It was one of the dresses Nick bought her during the first days of her job. She had never thought of wearing it, but finally a chance has presented itself.

On reaching the restaurant a waiter approached her and told her that their tables have been reserved and Mr. Nick was waiting for her. She turned and looked towards the table and saw Nick siting on one of the chair.

He was so handsome, dressed in a black suit .As always he had gone for a haircut and even shaved his beards. The stubble which had started sprouting on his jaws made him a more masculine and rugged look.

Her heart skipped a beat. Just by looking at him, she already feels warm. She walked slowly towards the table and when Nick noticed her presence, he stood up and helped her sit on the opposite chair.
