Chapter 4
Secret
Kim Taehyung kept you awake that night. Your interactions with him kept on playing in your mind, trying to figure out if you had ever known him. But even when you play it over and over again, you don't come up with a single concrete interaction with him that can prove you that you have known him before.
He's always been a stranger who wears black leather jacket inside the campus even when it wasn't allowed, he was the stranger who fought with a guy inside the cafeteria and he was just a visitor at the charnel house. He was also the governor's son, if that ever helps.
Aside from that, you don't know him anymore. But for him to act that way, there's surely a strong reason. The way he stared at you, it was too intense, it wasn't the way you'd look at someone, most especially a stranger like you. But his eyes were searching for familiarity and he mentioned 'her' earlier.
Who was her? And why did he thought you were someone else?
There's only one person that entered your mind. Kara. Your twin sister. He might know her. He must've known her. She must've been the one who he visited yesterday too.
With that thought, it made you want to talk to him. You have to talk to him, that's why the moment you step inside your school, your eyes was already searching for that black leather jacket.
It was the easiest to notice other than his face. But lunch came and you still haven't seen him that you secretly wish that he's in a fight inside the cafeteria right now so you'd see him.
But the cafeteria was at peace today. No one was fighting at the middle of it and everyone was just minding their own business.
"Are you looking for someone, Y/n? You've been twisting your neck left and right since earlier." Nayeon commented as her eyes squint at you.
You shook your head, she might get it wrong if you say you're looking for him. Its better if you find him yourself.
"Come on, tell me. Maybe I can help you find that someone you're looking for." She said as she eat her pasta.
You just stared at her. She had a good point, maybe she can help you find him because she knows her territory more than you. Maybe she knows where he usually hang out. But you don't want her to misunderstood anything, especially that he's pretty well known here and you're sure that a lot of girl likes him.
"You're looking for Kim Taehyung, aren't you? Maybe he's at the rooftop." She said as she smirk like she knows your dirty little secret.
"Go on. Go find him, I won't tell." She snickered.
And so you decided to follow what she said, your feet were already leading you up stairs towards the rooftop. You were already seeing the door to the rooftop and there was only ten steps ahead of you when it opened and you saw him went in.
He stopped when he saw you. His eyes locked with yours again, and then there's that feeling again but you decided to ignore it.
"Can we talk?" You asked, you didn't know where you were getting your bravery from but you sure as hell know that you should use it before it disappears.
You thought he would listen to you but he went down and pass by your side. You were frozen on the spot while he continued leaving you there.
"Follow me." He spoke that made you turn to him.
He still had his back on you and was still walking away but you did what he said and followed him. Soon, you were in front of a glass wall, he stood there next to you, facing and looking through the glass.
The hall was quiet and you were swallowing your own spit as you feel the bravery you once felt earlier leave your body. You were nervous, you were speechless and now, you don't know what to do.
But you took a deep breath and just go with it, "Why did you do that yesterday?" You asked in a quiet voice.
"I thought you were someone I know." He said. He doesn't even look at you, then after seconds he turned and was about to leave and you know you couldn't lose this chance.
"Kara. Do you know my sister Kara? She's my twin." You said that made him stop. You were looking at his back, he had this strong broad shoulders.
"You think I don't know that?" He said, turning towards you. "I was there, Y/n, when she died. I was there."
Every word he spat came out too strong. Like he hated saying those words, like they were poison touching his tongue. It made you shiver and gasp for air, if he was there then he knows the truth? Then he knows your story. He knows that you killed her.
"H-how did you know her?" You stuttered.
He took a step forward, his eyes were intense again. He was looking at you like he wanted to touch your soul with his eyes.
"She was my lover. And you know what hurts the most? I couldn't even go to her funeral." He said and then off he go.
You couldn't believe it. You couldn't believe what he said. Kara never had a lover, at least that's what you know because she never said she had one. But come to think of it, around the last year before she died, she became secretive. She doesn't tell you where she'd go everytime, or why she would stay behind when its already dismissal or who's she talking to on the phone. She doesn't even let you inside her room anymore that time.
You were almost rushing in your house when you went home after dismissal. Your mind wouldn't be at peace the whole afternoon and what he said kept on bugging you. There was no one inside your house, not even your mom so you got the keys to your sister's room and opened it.
Your hands were shaking as you hear the door click and the door knob twisted. The sun was already setting yet it's rays were still piercing through her windows and into her thin white curtains. Her room were in shades of baby blue, white and beige.
Her bed was neatly made like she was still here this morning and her bed was waiting for her to lay there again. Her study table was neatly done too, not a single piece of a scratch paper was seen scattered around.
"How can you be so perfect?" You whispered as you smile bitterly.
But you weren't there to admire her room or how perfect your twin was, you were there to confirm if what he said was true. You started to pull her cabinets and look for her phone there, you know that they put her phone here after she died. You saw it in a zip bag, the screen was broken and drops of dried blood were splattered across the screen.
You took it out and tried to turn it on but it had no battery. You put it back and decided to look more on her things. She should've kept something that is connected to him that isn't inside her phone.
There at the bottom of her folded clothes, you touched something hard. Something that had pointed corners, you were gentle to pull it out and not ruin her pile of clothes.
It was a picture frame, the borders were in color black and it displayed a picture of them. Her arms were around his shoulders, like hugging him, as she smile at the camera. He had his hand on her back too, like he wanted to give her more support and security and he was smiling here too but he was looking at your sister.
They look cute, they look like they really belong with each other. And right then and there, you knew he wasn't lying, he really was her lover.
She was his lover but he was her secret. He was her someone and you didn't even know. She didn't even tell you, her twin, her bestfriend. That's why he couldn't attend her funeral, you never even saw him at the hospital, not even his shadow because he was her secret. He wasn't someone that your family should know.
And she wasn't ready to tell it to anyone.
"Why didn't you tell us? Why didn't you tell us that your secret was Kim Taehyung?" You whispered as you touch her face on the picture.
You wonder how much it hurt him. He couldn't go to her funeral, he couldn't go to the hospital while her life was slipping away, he couldn't even go to her burial. How much hurt did he felt when he lost your sister?
You guess you will never know but you're sure that you share the same pain, at least half of it. But even when you know that he can understand you, you shouldn't go near him anymore. You should stay away from him because he knows. He knows what really happened.
Your eyes switch to him. You look at his smile, you never saw him smile since you transferred. His expression was always stoic, intense and intimidating. That's how you'll describe his face. But his smile in this picture was something else, it was magical. Like he was feeling something magical.
And now you wonder, why did your sister kept him as a secret?
