Chapter 4
Sweet Aphrodite’s POV
I put everything that I could think of that would help us in the bag in case of emergency. I grabbed my black jacket on my cabinet and wore it. I fixed my hair into a ponytail and carried my backpack then went out of the room.
I silently made my way out, careful not to disturb Irene and Stella in their sleep. They would be asking where am I going when it supposedly my rest day for work. I slowly closed the door of our room before going to the main door.
We all have our own duplicate keys so it would not be hard for me to enter our apartment later. I glanced at my wristwatch and learned that it is almost eleven in the evening. I jogged my way out of the village and rode a bus to bring me to the convenience store where I am going to meet Sir Pablo.
I must be lucky that I did not encounter one yet because is a high chance that I will not survive again.
I arrived at our meet-up place after five minutes. I am thankful that I wore my jacket because it is so cold here!
Sir Pablo is seating alone in the corner of the store, busy reading a book. He must saw me in his peripheral view because he looked up to see me and signaled the chair in front of him.
"Good evening, Sir Pablo." I pulled the chair to sit and put my bag on the vacant chair beside me.
He resumed reading the book again. "Good evening, Miss Aphrodite," he uttered without looking at me then he handed me a canned coffee that I immediately accepted.
I stared at him while opening the coffee. "Did I make you wait, Sir?"
He shook his head, his eyes are still on the book. "Not really. Don't worry, I was busy reading this."
Sir Pablo pushed the book in front of me. It is a hardbound book with a black cover and the word 'Vampire' is written in elegant and gold font. I put my drink on the table to touch the book.
I ran my fingers on the smooth cover before opening it on the page with a marker. My lips parted in awe when I realized that it's a pretty old book. The smell and the brownish color of the pages told me that it is probably older than me.
The content looks interesting. It contains facts about vampires and there are illustrations of the creature.
"I am not really convinced on their history that is written in that book. But that is not important because that would just be our guide. We need to have awareness about their abilities. Understanding their background is significant," he said.
I nodded and resumed reading. Glad that Sir Pablo brought me on this mission to gather evidence. I know this is dangerous but my peace of mind is important. And I have this growing obsession with them.
"Based on that book, vampires are the creatures that are fed by blood. They are a bloodsucking monster, blood is their life support. They have fangs which they are using to be fed. Long nails, red eyes, pale white skin, and they are fast." I nodded to agree.
Those descriptions are true based on what I saw and encountered. They are scary and humans are food to them.
"They are beautiful creatures, face are perfect and enticing. You won't notice that they are not human. The only clue is their pale white skin but these days, that skin color is pretty common," he added then glanced at my hands.
My brows furrowed in confusion. Beautiful? But the two that I encountered are not beautiful. They are monstrous. Blood is coming out from their mouth. They are horrifying creatures.
"But there are some groups who are crazy, who have uncontrollable bloodlust. They have scary appearances and they lost control in themselves."
So, that is what I encountered? And it means, there is some real vampire that could appear like humans? And there is a possibility that we could be with them on normal days? But who knows. We are not sure about the credibility of this book It could be fictional or... not.
"They are scared to sun rays, specifically sunset and sunrise. They are sensitive to those. But except that two, they could walk under the sun. So, we could encounter them in broad daylight."
It's still dangerous for humans, even in the morning. We are only safe during the sunset and sunrise. They are free to walk everywhere, to victimize someone.
For 19 years of my life, I thought that only natural disasters, accidents, and humans are the ones capable of ending our lives. It is terrifying to realize that there are vampires, too, who could kill us.
Sir Pablo discussed more. We are not sure what is real among those information but at least we are aware of the different possibilities.
It's already past 12 when we decided to go on our mission. Sir Pablo bought another five cans of coffee so we would stay wide awake. I looked at the window when he started the engine. Even it's already midnight, we passed by side street vendors. There are still people walking from their work. But it lessens and lessens as we go farther.
The lively and noisy park in the morning is now very quiet. Darkness dominated the whole area. There are some lampost but the light from it is already too weak.
I could feel the intense beating of my heart when the car stopped. There is suddenly an urge to back out when I realized that there is a high chance that we would encounter a vampire here. I suddenly questioned our decision in my mind. What are we going to do if we meet one?
I have a small knife, flashlight, pepper spray, and a taser.
I looked at Sir Pablo who has a hint of nervousness on his face but he still looks sure. He has a good built for fighting but vampires are strong. Would he stand a chance?
"Want to back out, Miss?" he asked while scanning the place. "I could bring you back at your home, now."
I shook my head and hugged my bag, gathering all my determination that is falling apart.
"No, Sir," I answered with finality.
Cold wind welcomed us when we stepped out of the car. After the wind passed by, deafening silence filled our ears that it feels like we are in a different dimension. I inhaled deeply, filling my lungs with air. There's no turning back.
The flickering of lights from the lampost is audible because of the intense silence. Sir Pablo's steps on the cemented path are making soft sounds too. He scanned the area then he glanced at me.
"Stay in the car. I'll check that place," he commanded then pointed to the darker corner of the park where the playground is located.
My eyes widened a bit. "I am gonna go with you, Sir," I whispered.
"No. I already let you go here with me. Now, you'll follow me and you will stay in the car, Miss Aphrodite," he uttered with so much authority in his voice.
I swallowed hard, suddenly intimidated again, but then I nodded and followed what he just said.
He grabbed his bag from the backseat before he started walking away. As he steps away, he is slowly losing in my sight.
I blew some air to ease my fear. I just keep on staring at the spot where I last saw him, waiting for him to appear again. Concern intensified inside me when five minutes later, I still did not saw him. He has not come back yet.
What if he's already a victim?
I rolled down the window to listen to the surrounding. Not contented, I pushed the door to open and I made few steps away from the car while holding a flashlight that I got before I came out.
My heart pounded in fear when I heard low growls. I gently pushed the button to open the light and directed it to the dark corner. My eyes widened when I saw my wounded professor in front of two vampires. The sleeve of his jacket and the other part of his clothes are already ripped, tainted with blood.
Desperate to stop them from attacking Sir Pablo again, I pressed the alert sound on my flashlight. They aggressively glanced at my spot and when they saw me, they immediately walked towards me. As my instinct told me, I started to run away.
I heard their crazy laugh.
Now, what am I gonna do? I just thought of saving Sir Pablo but I had no plan to save myself. Stupid!
I pulled the door of the car, planning to drive it and hit the vampires but it won't just open.
"Damn it!" I cussed and pulled it harder. Is it now lock from the inside?
"Run, Sweet! Now!" I heard Sir Pablo shouted.
I glanced at him and I saw the two vampires slowly walking towards me. They are confident that even I run as fast as I could, they would catch me. I gritted my teeth and left the car after the fail attempts to open it.
"Oh, your blood smells so good!" the one said and laughed hysterically.
I kept on running while thinking of a good idea to escape this. I flinched when I heard a loud gunshot. I glanced back and I saw that one of the vampires is kneeling on the ground. Sir Pablo is holding a gun directed towards the other one who is still walking After me.
"Just run!"
I nodded and looked at my way, I continue running. Did the gunshot kill the vampire?
My eyes widened when suddenly, the vampire that is following me is now in my front. I tripped on the ground after I tried to stop, afraid that he would catch me.
And I am sure that we're doomed when I heard Sir Pablo's grunts.
This is a bad idea.
