Chapter 7

Chapter Seven

Colton’s pov

It’s been two days since my best friend was laid to rest. His parents went back home to pick up the pieces of their lives. I haven’t talked to Joslyn. She was giving me the time I needed to grieve. I think that made me fall for her even more. It was like she knew what I needed without me having to tell her. She was perfect for me in every way.

Luckily the arsonist hasn’t struck again. I knew there was just a matter of time before he did. Lacey told me Neal was out of the hospital and doing a lot better. That was good to hear. My captain called me and told me I needed to come in today. It seems like life was going on without Colby.

I got dressed and headed into work. I text Joslyn and told her that I missed her, and I would talk to her soon. I walked into the fire station and looked up on the wall. There was a plaque up for Colby.

I had to quickly look away before the tears started to fall. I needed a clear head or else I would put everyone I worked with tonight in danger. I decided to go see who the paramedics were working tonight.

Usually it was a girl Colby had dated a few times, and really liked. She was also taking his death really hard, so I wanted to check on her. I was shocked to see Joslyn standing there talking to her. Was she here to see me? This was a nice surprise. When she turned around I saw here wearing a paramedic’s outfit.

“Um Joslyn what are you doing here?”

“I ugh work here now. This was the fire house that I was assigned to. I was going to tell you, but you have been busy with everything, and I wanted to give you that time you needed.”

I just looked at her. She still could have picked up the phone and told me. My captain frowns upon anyone dating that work together. This could ruin our relationship. The siren went off meaning we had a call to go too.

I hurried off without saying another word to her and jumped in the truck. I wasn’t prepared to work a fire just yet. Fear was eating away at me. Not only was I thinking of Colby, but I was also worried about Joslyn now. I just hoped what we were heading to wasn’t anything major. I had too much on my mind to be able to stay safe.

Joslynn’s pov

By the look on Colton’s face I could tell he was upset with me. I should have just called and told him, but I was scared. Now he won’t even look at me. Was he that mad at me? Or was it because we were being called out to a fire? Was he ready to be back at work?

Here I was being called on my first assignment and I was nervous. When we got there, I noticed it was a car accident, and not a fire. I jumped right in forgetting about everything except for what I had to do. I looked over and saw that Colton was watching me with a smile on his face. I wondered what that meant.

We loaded the young girl up and took her to the hospital. Everyone else headed back to the station. Once we told the nurses about our patient they took over, so we headed back to the station.

My partner Lydia had known Colby as well. She was really nice, but she had this sadness in her eyes that only happened when you lost someone you loved. When we got back everyone was sitting down to supper, so we went in the mess hall to join them. I looked around but didn’t see Colby.

I guess he was avoiding me. I didn’t want this to come between us, but I won’t give up on my dreams either. He just needed to get over it. Someone sat down beside me, so I looked up and smiled. I was glad to see it was Colton.

“How’s your first day on the job going?”

My phone pinged so I looked at it. It was a message from Colton. (The Captain doesn’t like people that work together to date so here we have to act professional. I love you baby cakes.) So, this is why he’s acting distant.

We could get in trouble for being together. If I had known that I would have waited for another assignment. So now we had to pretend not to know each other. That was going to be hard when seeing him in uniform made me want to rip his clothes off. I mean he looks hot.

“Um it’s been good so far. I’m Joslyn by the way.”

“I’m Colton. I have worked here a long time so if you need anything don’t hesitate to ask. Welcome to the family.”

I smiled at him and said thank you then continued to eat. Everyone else around the table introduced themselves and welcomed me in. Other than hiding my relationship with Colton working here might not be so bad.
