Chapter 3: Alexander

“Good morning, Sir.” Lexus greeted me, with a grin. It’s 6 am in the morning and I’m about to start reviewing papers for the company when he entered. I hope he has something good news to tell.

I begged to help me last month when I couldn’t find Liena, gladly he did find her. My life had been a mess when I started to lose her. I was about to propose to her that day, she was about to get home that day. But she got into accident, it must be our rival company. I know that they’ve been following my where abouts since then. Up to what extent can they go far from harming the one I love? Let’s see what they can do if I bring them down, crawling from nowhere.

“Do you have any news?”

“Apparently, from the day I started investigating the hints that are visible from the accident are too little to lead something into conclusion.” He opens the brown folder that he’s holding and lay the files on my desk.

There are pictures of the car in the cliff, pictures of possible witnesses and pictures of Liena. I gritted my teeth; I can’t contain the rage that I’m feeling right now. But, apart from this I also feel guilty what happened that day when she caught me with someone I shouldn’t be with.

I’m sorry Baby. I’m so sorry.

“Any other than this?” from the way Lexus looked at me I know the answer. He sighed and inserted his hands into his pockets.

“Not yet, but I’m working into details right now.” He’s frustrated now, Liena’s case must be really complicated.

After the talk Lexus left, he has something to do in police station. Some work that’s needed to be done. Lexus is a police officer and also a private investigator. It’s convenient to hire someone in this kind of case that is working as police officer.

Another concern that I worry of is the probability that there is someone following Liena and Jess. Could it be our rival company? Or could it someone else who tried to kill Liena?

Jess called me yesterday informing me that there’s a car that could be following them since after the day that Liena got out of the hospital. I’ve hired someone to look after Liena and Jess, I trust Jess, but I am just after their safety. I was right that maybe someone is really trying to rid of Liena. Especially right now, I really must take precautions if I don’t want to lose again Liena in my life.

They must wait, whoever did this to her. They have to hide well, because I’m not sitting here just running my company, I’m sitting here to bring them down.

Before I could flip the other page of the paper that I’m reading, Thelsea – my secretary opened the door.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, Sir. But ma’am Veronica is here.”

“It’s fine, let her in.” I wonder what my mom’s business could be coming in here. She’s never been here since my father died 3 years ago.

“Hi son!” She greeted me in all smiles, as usual she always looks classy. With her hair in neat bun and strict aura.

“Hi mom, why are you here?”

She half-heartedly laughed when I asked that.

“Why? Am I not allowed to check on my one and only handsome son? I’m hurt Alexander.” She put her hand in her chest as if acting like she’s really hurt by what I said. What a dramatic mother, I laughed at her and hugged her.

“No mom, it’s just that you’ve never been here before after dad passed away, and that was a long time ago.”

I thought she would feel sad of what I’ve said but looks like she’s not. She has still her smile on.

“I know, but I have decided already to conquer my fears. And besides, that was a long time ago as you said.”

She’s right, Mom was devastated when she knew dad died. She never ate anything for days, she never slept and she loss weight because of it. We even brought her to the hospital because she got sick, she was heartbroken. I guess I would feel the same if Liena didn’t make it after the accident. I guess I will gladly take my own life if it happens. She’s my life, I wonder if she feels the same as that towards me now that she had lost her memories. I hope that even though she can’t remember, her heart will.

“Anyway, I hope you will visit me in our tonight, we will have a dinner together. I missed you, son. See you later, I will wait for you.” My Mom made her way out after she told me that, I know I can’t say no to her.

I don’t live in our house anymore; I started living alone on my own when I was 18. It was the best decision I ever did in my life, because of it I learned to be independent at a young age.

It was almost 7 pm when my mother texted me about the dinner. I even almost forgot about it. I drove my way to our house, not far away from the gate I can see another car. It’s a black SUV. I guess my mom has a visitor tonight.

As I made way through the door, Nancy – our long-time maid, opened the door for me. She greeted me and I just smiled back at her. She’s been here since I was young.

“Where’s mom?”

“She’s in the kitchen, Sir. The dinner is already ready, they are waiting for you, Sir.” She humbly replied.

I walk to the kitchen; I thought I would be seeing an old man or a guy as same as the age of mom but I’m wrong. It’s a woman and probably a year or two years younger than me. Is she setting up a date for me? If this is meeting how weird that it’s needed to be in our house.

“Hey, Alexander!” The girl who earlier facing my mom, is now facing me.

“Aubrey?” What the hell is she doing here?

“Oh! You are here already.” My mother smiled timidly, holding a pot of a hot mushroom soup. Acting as if she didn’t do wrong.

“Mom, why is this woman in our house?!”

Aubrey is the granddaughter of our company’s rival. All this set-up is driving me mad.

“Son, just hear us out first.” My mom smiled again and she’s staring to irritate me.

I give them the benefit of doubt, sat on the chair. In front of us are different kind Mediterranean cuisine.

“I know that we are rival in terms of business but me and my father decided to cut it out. I’m going to be direct to the point, we want to invest in your company or if you will give us a better opportunity then we want a partnership.” This woman is cunning, she met my mother I bet they are already seeing each other before she proposed this to my mom beforehand.

Looks like this the best time for me to hold them in the neck. I shouldn’t be reckless; I should not leave any clue for them to know my next plans. I know too well that they are also planning something, I should be more careful especially to this woman in front of me.

“Well, Miss Aubrey I’m not quite sure of this. But I’m not closing any doors for you, I want to talk to your father about the terms.”

The dinner went well, and I guess my mom is quite happy that I didn’t turn down her so-called ‘friend’.
