Chapter 2 : Jess

“I don’t think so.” I answered her back.

I feel bad for Liena. I feel bad about her situation. I feel guilty that I cannot fully help her, that the information I can give her are only limited. It’s not only because I am afraid that it might cause her again headaches but one of the important reasons is that her ex doesn’t want me to inform all about her past. He wants her to remember it by herself.

Liena is my best friend since we both came from the orphanage, but I rarely contact her when she started hanging out with Alexander – her ex-boyfriend, the one that is helping us right now. I don’t really know what’s the score between them. I don’t know if they were really boyfriend-girlfriend back then. I just reconnected with Liena when I was called the moment she got into accident, and she was delivered to the hospital where I was working that time. I just did what I was told to do as of now, Alexander wanted me to take care of Liena, I gladly agreed. I’m still angry towards Alexander because he didn’t take care of Liena that’s why she got into accident.

Am I lying to Liena? Nope. Because I truly have no idea what’s going on.

“I’m sorry, Lien.” She turned her gaze to me from her far away thoughts. She looks confused as to what I uttered.

“Why would you say sorry, Jess? You didn’t do something; all you did was to help me.”

I sighed, why do she have to be so good? So nice? Sometimes I wonder if her personality brought her to that accident. I wonder if Alexander has something to do it.

Before I can answer Liena my phone rings, Alexander’s name popped into it. I pick it up and remove myself in the living room. I act as if getting water from the kitchen. This set up is all sick!

“How is she?” He asked.

“She is doing fine,” I sip water into the glass. “How long can you hide away from her? You know I wonder if you purposely tried get her into that accident.” I hear some flipping of pages on the other line, I bet his reading something.

“Of course not, she’s my girlfriend how can I do that to her?”

“I don’t know, you tell me.” I hope you are pissed.

“Just tell me if she needs something, all expenses are on me.” He said cutting off the line.

How rude can he be? I wonder if he’s telling the truth. How can Liena like this guy?

I came back to the living room and saw Liena sleeping on the sofa, I reckon she’s tired. As much as I want to help her, I really have no idea how, but even so, I will do everything to get you better Lie.

I came near to the window; I can see it’s getting dark now. All busy people are walking on the roadside. I guess my apartment is just in perfect spot.

Before I turn my back away from the window, my eyes caught again the car that was parked earlier on our apartment building. But then it’s not parked near us, it’s on the other roadside actually near the coffee shop. I observe if there’s someone suspicious getting a coffee in that shop.

There’s a woman but she has a stroller, she doesn’t seem harmful. How can be a motherhood be harmful? Lol.

Funny me.

There’s an old man sitting alone in the table near where the car is parked but he doesn’t seem suspicious either.

Aside from these two customers, are only the owner and the waiter in that shop. There’s something off, or maybe not. Probably its’s just my feeling.

Oh boy! I probably need to get a job.

Well, I do have a job. But solving and helping Liena in her problem is just in another level. I’m blown away, my goodness. It’s like we are starting from a scratch, crumpled, blank paper.

In the next day morning, I prepared our breakfast. I wake up early I need to go to my work today, I’m afraid that I need to leave Liena alone.

“Are you sure you are okay being alone here?” I asked her while we are having our breakfast.

“Yeah, you do not have to worry about me.” She’s smiling up to her ears now while chewing her sausage. Liena looks normal. She can cook, do the dishes, and even help me clean the apartment. Last day, I brought her with me to the grocery store and we shopped our food and necessities for a week. If you are going to look at her, it seems like she’s alright.

Alexander called me last night; he does not want me to leave Liena alone – me too. But our head nurse is already calling me nonstop. Later on, Liena’s crazy ex agreed to let me leave Liena. A sudden thought popped into my head; I wonder if Alexander is secretly spying on us. If the car we saw last day is his or does he have something to do about it.

“Is there something wrong, Jess?”

“Uh. Nothing. Just pre-occupied with my thoughts.”

“Thoughts about what?” She curiously asked.

“About you leaving alone here” That’s partially true.

“You have nothing to worry about me, and besides we can call and text each other.” Her assurance made me loosen a little bit.

That’s why I decided to go to my work after breakfast. Liena already knew what to do and what medicine to take. She even jokingly said that she’s not disable, she just forgot who she was.

Before I can book an uber, I saw again the same car we saw last day and yesterday. But it’s further from our apartment building now. It’s a store away from our building, I don’t know if the owner of that car owned any business here or that car is really following and spying on us. Without hesitation, I called Alexander, and he picks it up on the first ring.

“Is there any problem?” He asked immediately, he’s the one who’s always calling to me to ask about Liena. That’s why maybe he thinks that there’s something wrong happened because I’m the one who called him.

“Just wondering, if you sent someone to spy on us.” I bluntly ask.

“No, I didn’t. You are always there with Liena why would I do that?” There is something fishy going on here.

“Are you sure? Didn’t you sent a car to follow us?”

“Absolutely not, wait is there anyone following you?” I can feel he’s a bit agitated right now.

“I’m not sure but there’s a car that was parked in my apartment building the other day, when Liena saw it, she got headaches and blurred flashbacks of memories. I asked her if the car is familiar but it’s not. Last day and yesterday I saw this car again, I don’t know if one of the owners of the shops here owns that car.” I forgot totally to tell him about this stuff.

“Why you just only told me about it right now?!” Oh, wow this guy has a temper.

“I know I forgot, anyway I will send to you the number of Liena so that if anything happens you can call her.” I told him; I know he won’t probably call Liena, but I know that his love for her will make a way to just even send a message.

“I’m not ready yet to talk to her or see her. I might hurt her, or our memories might hurt her.” He said in low tone voice.

I sighed, “Either way you will be still hurting her regardless of time, but I hope sooner or later we can already help Liena bring back her memories. If you did something wrong to her in your past, you should face the consequences.” I told him before ending the call.
