The next day after school I sat outside, waiting for Valak. Apparently there was someone she wanted me to meet but got stuck in a meeting.
So I was forced to sit outside listening to naive girls cry about the deteriorating love lives and boys who I personally thought were a disappointment to the human race.
"Blayze!" One of the girls called, as I settled down on an abandoned bench far away from their conversation. "I've been meaning to ask you something." She announced as she came closer and sat uncomfortably close to me, thrusting her arm in the crook of mine and smiling like we were an old married couple.
"Can you do me a favour?"
As soon as those words protruded from her glossy lips, I knew what this was about.
Ever since it was announced that morning that I was going to Christian Brothers Academy, girls were making it their mission to befriend me as a way of having a connection to their brother school. I'd been asked to pass love notes, listen in on any gossip, pick up stories on any of the girls and take notes of everything they did.
"So... you've probably heard of Marcus Green, the quarter back at CBA?" When I didn't answer she continued. "So anyways I was wondering if you could find out who he's dating, so I can call dibs if he's not dating anyone cause it's Valentine's Day in about a month so like, I can't not get anything! And roses from Marcus Green would be like the best gift ever! So like... would you mind doing a little research for me?" She did the puppy dog eyes, and the adorable smile, she even batted her eyelashes!
But all I could think was... pathetic.
"Not happening." I deadpanned, not bothering to look at her. She sighed so hard I bet her lungs shrivelled from lack of oxygen.
"Come on! Please!" She whined, her grip tightening around my arm.
One glare was enough to get her to step back and she rolled her eyes before flicking her hair and strutting away, calling me a grumpy bitch in the process.
I probably was a grumpy stick in the mud, but I didn't mind it.
Having friends as an agent was dangerous, they became your weakness, a blind spot which the enemy could use against you. So I'd learnt to keep to myself and not care for anything but the death of my Target.
I let my eyes gaze at my surroundings. The school was quite massive, trees everywhere, fountains, flowers, the works. I'd lived at the school ever since I could remember and I knew every nook and cranny of the place, including the underground sector where I'd trained as a child. I was the only female agent left from the Dominican Convent, the rest were dead.
In fact, the agency had stopped taking in female recruits because we were believed to be weak and unable to handle the pressure.
So far, I had been proving them wrong.
"Agent B92, use the alley to the left of the main building and come out the back," came Valak's voice through the earpiece.
I stood up and walked towards the old alley in between the two buildings until I came to an opening. I jumped over the gate fence with ease and sprinted over to the black Audi r8.
In the drivers seat sat Valak, adorned by a short black leather dress and boots that stopped right above her knees. I stared at her as I stood by the door.
"How have you not blown your cover, Sister Valak?" I asked.
She smiled, parting her bright red lips that matched her fiery hair. "Years of practice." she answered with a smirk.
I shook my head and got in. We drove out the alley and on to the main road. The drive wasn't a very long one and even though I was tempted to ask her where we were going I knew that that was one in a million things you could never do. Question Valak.
We stopped in front of a series of houses, a few kilometers from the central business district and got out. The area looked like a peaceful suburb, there were a few cars parked outside and a couple of children riding their bikes. It was a typical place where you could take a walk at ten in the night and not get mugged by hobos, or have those friendly neighbors that waved at you on an early Saturday morning while they watered their lawn.
"It's Agent A06," Valak announced through the intercom that was stuck on the wall. The door clicked open and we entered.
The inside was pretty simple and neat. The furniture was modern and everything seemed well placed and orderly, it made me feel comfortable. I had an OCD for untidiness, even a pen out place could throw me on a frenzy.
"Do you like it?" asked Valak, her greyish green eyes sparkling at me.
I shrugged, it was okay.
"You better. This is your new home while you work on the mission."
I frowned and shook my head. First I was doing this mission against my will now I was meant to stay in a total strangers home? No thanks.
"Again, agent. It is not your choice to make." she stated.
"But I..."
"No buts."
"Unless it's yours," came a male voice. A guy about my age emerged from one of the rooms. "Then I'm all ears." He smirked seductively at Valak.
"Trent." She greeted, standing on her tippy toes to give him a hug. "It's been long, look at you all grown up!"
"Me? Look at you, still as sexy as ever by the way." Trent replied and Valak giggled like a giddy school girl.
He was tall, taller than me in fact, which was quite rare since I stood at an incredible one point eight meters and he seemed to be at an astounding two. He had a welcoming face, bright and sweet.
I found it astoundingly annoying.
"Okay, when you're done flirting with the damn cougar, I'd like to know how me being forced to live here will benefit my mission." I requested with a sarcastic smile, folding my arms.
Valak rolled her eyes and answered me instead. "Trent, Agent G69, this is Blayze, Agent B92,"
"Aah, an ancient one, no wonder she's so uptight," came his comment. I pulled out my blade and threw it, aiming for his frustrating face. It flew quite close, only to be caught mid air by Valak before it penetrated his skull.
She gave me a deadly glare, the glare I always got when I cut the wrong wire during bomb disarmament when I was six.
"As I was saying," she continued flipping the knife so that it landed in my hands and I tucked it away, sulking. "Trent is going to be teaching you how to be more... human."
"I am perfectly fine the way I am, thanks," I replied stubbornly.
"Yeah, because using someone's face as a dart board is so normal," Trent answered.
"Would you much rather I use it as a boxing bag?" I asked, threateningly take a step forward as he did too.
"Agents!" Valak commanded. "Agent B92, Trent has had..."
"You mean Agent G69?" I corrected her.
She sighed. "As I was saying Agent G69 has had more experience with the outside world than you have, he will help you fit in,"
"I'm a girl at an all boys school, I'll already stick out like a swollen thumb."
"A hissy one at that..." mumbled Trent.
"Don't make me pull out my gun." I warned him.
"If you do not stop this I will have you both put in solitary," threatened Valak, silencing us both.
"Agent G69, you will be working with Agent B92,"
"I work alone." I stated.
"Not this time." She snared. "You both start school tomorrow. Focus on the mission, search and destroy and..."
"Terminate the target. I know." I completed.
"I'll keep in touch. Enjoy." She said with a smile, hugging G69 again before walking out.
"Shall I show you around, ancient?" he asked.
"Don't ever call me that again, or so help me I will nail you to the wall with your penis."
He scoffed and draw up one side of his face into a tight smirk. "You'd have to get it hard enough to use as a nail... ancient."
My jaw clenched and I sighed gravely. He wasn't scared of me. That was going to be a problem.
