Chapter 5

"Good to see you, Anna," I said, embracing her warmly. Anna, the busy type, usually avoided getting entangled in things she didn't care about. But this time, she was acting strange.

"Same here," she replied, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "I heard you left your husband at the altar. Spill the beans!"

"Let's not talk about it," I refused her devious pleas, which kept on coming regardless of words. "I want the full gist, nothing else." She stood by her words and kept on asking me about it.

After several minutes of voice torture, I finally let her in on what occurred, letting her have it all.

"My baby girl is having a baby. I am so happy", she gave me a big hug, pouring her emotions into it this time.

Anna had decided to stay in my apartment for a month to monitor my activities. I didn't give in to the idea at first, but it's been lonely living all by myself these past months.

Jordan was still finding it hard to believe and kept on questioning me each day. "Why would your parents send you to marry someone you don't know?" He'd ask, and my answer remained the same: "I don't know; maybe I wasn't perfect for them.".

Jordan didn't stop me from working the following week. He seems to be having some issues at home with his older sister and couldn't stop thinking at the office. "Big sis, I'll call you later; I'm busy," became his catchphrase. I wanted to help, but he wouldn't let me in on the details, leaving me in the dark like everyone else did.

The next day was the same thing, only this time we had a meeting with Perseverance Hospital. A hospital known far and wide for its expertise wanted a textile material for its workers. "Something beautiful and warm," their CEO had stated in the contract.

Jordan had left the meeting room before me in a rage. He was going bizarre because of his mom's frequent calls.

"This piece of material has the perfect texture for your workers. Its design helps to keep the individual warm despite the temperature of the room due to the special formula used to create it. Its mirror patterns help keep young patients busy when the doctors are busy due to their numerous proportions. One of our company's finest products". I explained the project we were working on, giving them a sample to check out.

"This is wonderful. I'll let the young master know about this.". The representative of the CEO said he was standing up to leave. "This is my business card; call me if there's any update on the items needed. Also, the CEO would like to have a meeting with you after lunch."

"You did great out there," Jordan declared before leaving me behind again. The office became silent once more, with everyone leaving for lunch. Jordan had asked me out for lunch, and I had accepted, determined to get information from him. He had been moody all week, and I felt he needed someone to talk to.

The restaurant across the company was bustling with people. Jordan didn't want to be seen by the people, so he decided we would eat in the office, ordering food from the nearest food store. He was more of a man of discipline and didn't like eating at work, but this time it was different. The strict man who hired me was changing drastically.

"Do you know steak tastes better when you eat it with a friend?" Jordan asked as he dug into the dish of baked asparagus and steak he ordered. I looked him in the eye, trying a specific psychology trick I saw online.

"Nothing's up with me. It's just that I've been very tired recently." His countenance glinted sadness on it. He was a lively man; something was going on. I pestered him to let me in on the information, and I failed to achieve that once more. A rigid man.

Some moments later, a man dressed in rags stormed into the office with a pistol in his hands. He claimed he wasn't here for the money, but he was here for Jordan. "Jordan Lane, I've been sent to end your treacherous life and bring peace to the people of the valley.".

Jordan didn't flinch, nor did he move a muscle. He didn't gaze at the man for even a second. The man had a petrified look, taking the pistol in his hands and aiming for Jordan. "Stop!" I yelled, devastated by the man's behavior.

Annoyed, the man changes his aim toward me. Jordan still didn't move a muscle; he was lethargic in the chair. "You look quite attractive; maybe I should have you for lunch," the man retorted, pulling off his shirt. He came closer, reaching out for me.

"Don't you lay a hand on my employee?" was the next thing I heard. The man was lying flat on the floor, with Jordan crushing his face with severe punches.

Only stains of blood could be seen on the floor. The cops had taken the man captive, with a bounty on his head as an escaped murderer. According to the reports, Jordan had captured the man three times, and each time he found a way to break out of the cell.

Jordan also left the office immediately after claiming he had unsettled business with the man. I was left alone in the office with the task of welcoming the CEO and stalling him till he got back.

Time went by slowly, I couldn't focus on one thing. I was lost in thoughts, from memory to memory searching for where I had gone wrong to always be in the midst of danger and wrongdoings.

"Mam, the CEO of Perseverance Hospital has arrived.", Debby, the secretary reached out to me. "Alright let him in".

The door of the room opened and I dropped my pen in shock. Right in front of me was the CEO of Perseverance Hospital who I acknowledged to be Avery Brooks.
