***Esther***
‘’This is going to end today!’’ I said to myself in a reassuring tone, ‘’I can't continue to be treated
as trash. I have dignity!’’ I reminded myself ‘’and I won't let it be trampled upon.’’
Matthew had always been a cheat, I forgave him the first time and even the second time, but
this time I will not let it go,
I thought to myself as I climbed the stairs that led to our apartment, unsure if I was making the
right decision but deep within my spirit I knew I had already had enough of his disrespect.
As I opened the door to the apartment, I was greeted by the Scent of flowers— A Romantic
dinner table had been set. Candles were lit to compliment it and as I moved closer to the table I
saw a Cardboard in it was written boldly ‘’Babe Forgive me this last time’’
‘’This was the exact thing he did the last time I caught him cheating. Does he think he can buy
me Over with this? Not this time! I have had enough of this nonsense I am leaving.’’
‘’Surprise!’’ He startled me and said enthusiastically with that killer smile I fell for, standing right
in front of me with a bottle of champagne and gestured for me to come over to the table.
‘’Babe I did all this for you, I know I have wronged you severally but this is going to be the last
time,’’ he said with a face and tone that showed deep sincerity, but I was done falling for that.
The only thing I was thinking of was how to tell him I was no longer interested in this charade we
both call a relationship, I was lost in my thoughts when he tapped me and jolted me out of it.
‘’Babe, I have been talking to you since you got here but you haven't given me any response,
you have been moody since you arrived, Babe, I am truly sorry it'll never happen again.’’
He placed his hands on my shoulder, lifted my chin, and pulled me closer by my waist, slowly he
kissed my forehead and nose and as he was getting to my lips I muttered the words, barely
above a whisper — ‘’Matthew I am Done.’’
Still, in his arms, he asked softly, his blue eyes now staring wide into mine, ‘’Done with what?
With being gloomy?’’
I managed to pull myself away from him, ‘’oh! Do you want to know what I’m done with? You!
I'm done with you. I am no longer interested in this relationship, I am done with you
disrespecting me, I have had enough of it.’’ I said in a firm tone.
He began laughing hysterically, I was puzzled and immediately demanded to know what was
funny!
‘’You are one hell of a comedian you should be a stand-up comedian'’ now pointing at me, ‘’I
promise to sponsor you.’’
He stood up and began to clap his hands
‘’Welcome on stage Miss Esther Gilbert.’’
‘’Matthew, do you think I am joking? Is that all I am to you now? A joke?’’ I said angrily
‘‘Sorry, but are you serious about this? Do you want to leave me? where to?’’ He paused for a
moment and then continued.
‘’You have no job, no house, no money, you are nothing without me! And you still want to leave?
No one will ever be with you! Nobody wants a liability for a girlfriend to talk more of a wife.’’ he
said, sounding more frustrated than angry.
The words pierced deep into my heart, those were hurtful words coming out from the mouth of
someone asking for forgiveness, someone I loved but never reciprocated the love.
Tears began to roll down my cheek, and my legs now felt heavy but I dragged them to the
closest to pack my clothes, as I was packing, I felt a hand on my shoulder from behind, It was
Matthews’.
‘‘Don't leave, it's nine-thirty pm.’’ He pleaded once more.
‘’You were right Matthew—I am a Liability and from today I cease to continue being one, I no
longer want to burden you with my responsibility, I need to go and fend for myself, I need to be
responsible for myself.’’
As I folded the last piece of my fabric into my suitcase, I heard Matthew in a stern voice. ‘’If you
go out that door, it's not going to be the same for either of us.’’
‘‘Yes, I know that already!’’
‘‘If you know then stop this drama’’ Esther.
‘‘Goodbye Matthew, I will prove you wrong, I will find a man that will love me genuinely, a man
that will reciprocate my loyalty, I assure you of that.’’
Now that I have packed, where will I go?
I have no money, no apartment of my own, I have been living with Matthew for the past six
months and now I have thrown all that away. As I walked down the staircase I began to think
deeply of what my fate would become.
Should I just end it all?— the thought of suicide had crept into my mind.
Matthew had said it all, I am a liability and no one would ever love me.
***Ding! Ding!***
It was like my whole body vibrated as my phone rang, it was Victoria. My only true friend.
‘‘Esther Darling how did it go?
What did he say?
Have you finally broken up with him?
Did you go ahead with the breakup?
I want the full gist!’’
Her voice was laced with anxiety and hope.
‘’Yes Victoria it's over between me and Matthew and now I'm out on the streets with nowhere to
go.’’ I sobbed.
‘‘Oh! Esther Darling don't cry, you're not alone, we'll figure this out together. You should come
over to the club and let's have some drinks, I could even hook you up with the Big boys in town,
I'm sure heaven has greater plans for you.’’ She said in a tone that brought back hope in me
and every thought of suicide disappeared.
Victoria works two jobs, one as a bartender in the nightclub and two as a library attendant
during the day.
As I walked down to the club with my suitcase I felt the cold breeze on my face sending a cool
relief down my spine.
‘’It's going to be a very long night,’’ I murmured to myself.
