Chapter four

* * * Flashback: Two years ago * * *

"Come on, is that all you've got Rain?" I whisper yelled at the Alpha's son and my best friend Rain. We were currently training or at least I was training alongside him. As the Beta's daughter, I am allowed to do so.

"Aghh" I screamed as Rain sneaked behind me and tackled me, successfully knocking me off my feet.

"I win and you loose" he smiled showing me dimples that never failed to send many girls' hearts into a frenzy.

"Not fair. I was distracted" I yell frustrated he was able to beat me. Now he would brag all day long that he was stronger than me and I would have to bear it.

"tsk tsk, you should always pay attention. That's the number one rule of training right. Don't be distracted next time" He stated, or rather smirked proudly. I was right. He is one cocky bastard.

"Yeah, this is the only time you've beat me. I could beat you hands down anytime" I smirked at him, effectively whipping his smirk off his face. It was simply amazing.

"Really, I'm your Alpha, show me respect" he joked.

"You are not Alpha yet" I laughed making sure to walk away proudly. My beautiful exit was ruined by Rain chasing me while I ran off to my house. Mom would be making something delicious. Just thinking about that made my stomach rumble. After dinner, I would play a game of catch with Dad and Rain. It would be so much fun. I could already envision how the evening would go and this brought a smile to my face. Rain followed me as I raced home. He was always with me since we were kids. We were always together be it at his house or at mine.

I ran home and into the living room, anxious to know what's for dinner. It could be a steaming bowl of pepper sauce with rice and a chicken casserole dish. It could also be spaghetti with meat balls and garlic bread. Oh yum.

I was snapped out of my reverie by sniffles coming from the kitchen. That sounded like mom.

"Oh yes, it's Mom" my wolf, Lisa chided.

"Well, I bet I should check on her" I thought.

"Who would do it if you don't" she replied sarcastically. I guess she is still a little upset that we got our ass beaten this morning at training.

"A little upset"? she snorted. I wasn't ready for another battle with words with my wolf so I just blocked her out.

I speed walked to my kitchen hoping to smell something appetizing only to see my mom huddled up in a corner, crying her eyes out.

"Now that's not what you see everyday", Lisa my wolf chimed in worriedly. I blocked her out, approaching my mom while looking around for the reason for her tears When I knelt beside her, she looked up at me with her tear stained face and burst into more tears.

"Mom, are you alright. Are you hurt. Is everything okay" I asked her worriedly.

"It's your Dad phoenix" she cried into my shoulder.

"What about Dad. What happened to him" I asked, now confused.

"He has.. he has... he has left us Phoenix" She said bursting into fresh tears.

"What do you mean 'left us' mom. Mom talk to me" I yelled but I didn't get any answers from her. Rain who entered at this point, turned back to get to the pack house in order to notify the Alpha that his Beta was missing. Dad had apparently left a note but I was too shocked to read it. Everything else happened in a blur. The Alpha, Dad's best friend, arrived and sent pack warriors to look for Dad.

Weeks after Dad's disappearance, rogues attacked the pack. The Alpha, Luna and a lot of pack members were killed. A lot of people blamed Dad saying he partnered with the rogues after he left. I prayed really hard during those weeks for Dad to come back but he didn't. Rain slowly drifted away from me and our friendship slowly evaporated till there was nothing left of it. He blamed me for everything.

Apparently the note Dad had left behind some how linked his disappearance to me. Rain felt Dad's disappearance weakened pack security as half the pack warriors went looking for him when he left. It made it easy for the rogues to attack the pack, leading to the death of his parents, the Alpha and Luna and the near collapse of the pack.

The obligations of Alpha were forced upon Rain's young shoulders and he singlehandedly had to take care of the pack. For all this, Rain couldn't forgive me and he still loathes me till this day.

Mom, on the other hand, kept on sulking. Her health worsened day by day. I tried to snap her out of it but apparently it was her mate that had abandoned her. I guess it was too much for her as she soon slipped into a coma. The doctors tried but they couldn't help it. She had lost the will to go on. I had to support Mom. I felt guilty.

Dad left because of me and Mom got into a coma. I was considered unfortunate. I was the kid that lost everything, my parents and my friend all at once. The pack loathed me as they had lost family members due to what my father did. Some called me unfortunate, others cursed, blaming me for all that happened. I slowly started to believe them and now, I am just a lonely eighteen year old pup who works in an eatery while hoping vigorously that her comatose mom would wake up.
