Aspen's POV
I sat dazed in my room, his last words about the evidence ringing in my head. I might have quit being a lawyer despite being successful at what I do because of personal issues. I've also been under surveillance which was caused by the very last case I had.
I remembered being offered a huge sum just to deal with a case of smuggling which was working against my client. I didn't know I was dealing with a deep rooted mafia, the Scars, and they took everything from me after that. They cleared up any trace of the client who had hired me to work for him which made me wonder in the first place if he hadn't known who they were or I was just the target since I was already making quite a name for myself.
After quitting and promising to butt out of their issues, they let me be but I knew I was being watched even though it's been two years now.
They were the reason my father was caught for whatever shit he did to end up in jail. My life went downhill and I hated it. I wanted evidence against them to bring them down badly but I never got any. I haven't felt so defeated in my entire life. Now I had the opportunity to take them down but it meant giving my soul to the devil himself.
His smug smirk flashed across my mind as I thought of him, almost making me puke. He had asked me to think about it and I currently don't know what to do about it at all.
Standing from my bed, I walked over to the window, looking out to the street with my arms folded across my chest. Everything looked normal, an almost silent street on this side of the city, but something else caught my attention and that was a black car I've recognized too many times to not know who it was.
There were four men casually dressed leaning against the car as if not to be suspicious but to me they were suspicious enough already. They were even much more than they usually are, keeping a tab on me and I could tell that didn't mean anything sweet and interesting at all.
What did they want now, physically showing up in a place I would surely notice them? I wasn't done with my thoughts when the doorbell dinged continuously, irritating the shit outta me.
“What the fuck is that?” I groaned, pulling the door open to see the fall figure standing there with a smug grin on his face. A frown settled on my lips since I hadn't expected him of all people to visit me from the Scars.
Standing before me, over six feet tall was the blonde haired underboss of Scars, Kai. His blonde hair stopped right on his shoulders, equally cut. He had blue eyes which I hated the sight of.
“Long time no see, Lawyer,” he tilted his head to the side, flaunting the cigar hanging between his fingers. “I think we have something to discuss.”
“You haven't stood before me in years, so why are you here now? Stalking me and something unpleasant comes up?” I raised a brow, leaning against the doorframe, not scared of him a bit but I knew what he was capable of.
“You didn't even try to invite me in. Am I not your guest?” He asked, leaning against the doorframe, towering over me but I wasn't a single bit intimidated by him. I might be the average height, but I could still defend myself against big guys like them anytime and day. But trying it would only add more issues to my plate which I would gladly avoid any day and anytime.
“Get to the point Kai and get out of my sight as swift as you came before me.” I already knew what he was here for, besides, he knew I knew about the surveillance on me all these days. He thought he could do anything to make me do his bidding, but I wasn't that naive.
On the scale of Giovanni and him, I would stay on Giovanni's side any day and any time. “Are you trying to mess with us now, Aspen?” He said, leaning forward with his smug smirk suddenly turning into a hard frown.
“Do I threaten you that much, Kai?” I raised a brow with a smirk. “I know you can't kill me no matter what unless your boss orders it and he seems to want me down for some business which seems to be in the far future.”
“Isn't it sweet you know about that, Aspen darling.” His smug smile returned as he grabbed my chin to fix my gaze on him. “Whatever you were doing with Giovanni Hugo, get the idea out of your head. You're still at my mercy.”
“That might be your downfall.” I replied, slapping his hand away from my face. “Don't you ever approach me anymore, Kai. You've done all you want to do and I don't think it's any of your business if I go back to my suitable job as a lawyer.”
“Don't test my patience, Aspen. Unless you want to suffer even more, don't even think about it. Live your pretty little life till it's time for you to top it all off.” He replied before turning his back to me. “That's all I have to say to you. I'm sure you're smart enough to make the right decision, Aspen darling.”
Without exchanging another word, he walked down the corridor. I watched as he walked into the elevator before our gaze met each other, exchanging unspoken words.
I wasn't scared of this mafia world but being in it and being this weak and powerless is deep shit. Slamming my door with force, a groan of discomfort escaped my lips. Of course I was smart and I knew what I was going to do even without him reminding me about how smart I was.
“I didn't expect you to call me this early.” A calm and relaxed voice came from the other side of the phone but the calmness was the least of my worries right now.
“I'll take up your offer. Let's meet.”
