Chapter 5

SUSAN

I'm not the kind to trust easily but I don't know what pushed me to help Myles and accept him into our family that easily.

The boy looked harmless and helpless on the word go. Judging by the manner at which he ate the buns and juice, I can tell that he was really famished.

Judging by the clothes and shoes he was wearing, I conclude that he's from a well up family. However, I don't understand why he can't remember anything about himself except his name. Isn't that weird?

It's not like I'm doubting him...no, not at all but still, I'm not one hundred percent convinced that he's genuinely telling us everything. What if he's lying? What if he's not who he claims to be? I'm still shocked at how he was able to survive from the overflowing river given the rocks and sea weed found inside the river.

However, I decide to give him the benefit of doubt when he repeats the same explanation he gave to us to the cops. At his age, he couldn't have rehearsed all those lines, could he?

I'm glad that we've decided to keep him at our home. If no one claims him before the week ends, them we'll be forced to enroll him in the same school as Crystal come Monday the following week.

It's already on a Friday and no one has showed up to claim that he knows Myles. He has been staying at home with my husband and all the reports I'm getting from Zachary have cleared all the doubts from my mind.

Myles is a genius and he appears too mature for his age. It seems he passed through a lot till he found his way out of the deadly river. He's such a strong chap and I give him credit for that!

Since Monday, my husband has been coaching him on grade four work but he has been getting everything right.

Yesterday, he decided to coach him on grade five work and it seems he's not giving him the right work. He gets everything right.

Since it's already on a Friday, Zachary said he won't coach him anymore but he'll ensure when we enroll him to a school on Monday, he has an ideal which grade he'll take Myles for an interview!

Myles has become my two daughters best friend. He plays with them without getting pissed of easily. He sometimes asks us to allow him to prepare a meal for us but we always turn his request down. He's still a child and the last thing we'll do is to watch as I prepare then he can serve everyone else.

“I think we should take him to school already.” I tell my husband. It's already on a Sunday and tomorrow will be on a Monday, a perfect day for Myles to start school.

“That's okay with me. I don't think there's anyone who's about to claim him and if they do, we'll just hand him over to them after confirming that they're his family.

Zachary and I had a lengthy discussion and we've decided not to take him to a children's home or send him to the streets. We've decided to house him and facilitate his school provisions. After all, we don't have a son so having him is an added advantage. We can adopt him if need be.

“Then we have a deal.” my husband exclaims, as excited as he is, having in mind that we're going to have a baby boy in our family!

***

Monday is here and we've both taken Myles to school for admission. Since he can't remember his father's name, we decide to give him my husband's name and he's okay with that.

He's all happy and jovial as we walk with him towards the school. We don't have a car therefore we can't drive there. But everything is working to our advantage because the school is near our house.

After putting all those efforts to ensure he's at school, I just pray that no one claims him. We've already started being attached to him and if anyone comes to pick him, separating him from my sweet girls, Zachary and I will be so devastated! He's now part and parcel of our family and we always treat him as one of us!

Once in the school, we're ushered to the principal's office and after getting in, he greets us jovially, ushering us to a seat, assuring us that he was expecting us already.

A quick interview is conducted on him and everyone is surprised at how swiftly he answers all the questions.

“So, which grade were you at in your previous school?” the principal asks and Myles tells him that he can remember. He's so innocent and frank and I hope we'll live with him forever!

The principal concludes that he's supposed to be at grade six which happens to be the final grade at the junior school. After graduating here, he'll join another school which happens to be a highschool. We all agree with the principal. Myles is a genius and I wouldn't have been surprised if he was taken direct to high school!

As he's being escorted to one of the classes, he can't help but smile in gratitude. It's evident he loves school!

MYLES

When madam Susan and Mr Zachary whom I fondly call mum and dad decides to take me to school, I'm over the moon with excitement. All through the interview, I'm tempted to tell them that I was in grade five but I think against it for fear of blowing my cover. I want them to remain convinced that I know absolutely nothing about my origin except my name, of which they're not so sure that it's real.

***

Many more days pass but no one come ago claim me. I therefore conclude that I'm either so lucky or the moon goddess fulfiled her promise to take care of me and to help me conceal my real identity.

My current family has been treating me so well and I've already blended well with them. However, I can't dare forget where I came from since I promised myself and Bruce that I'll be back someday.

Crystal and I are bonding perfectly well and she always proudly introduces me to everyone as her elder brother, something which makes me so happy. I'm so lucky to have been accepted by everyone in her. It's strange but all I know is that it's a favour from the goddess herself!

One day after school, I decide to call Bruce. I had to cram his number for fear of being discovered. I'm good at cramming stuff therefore cramming that simple number didn't take time. That's something I used to do at night while alone in bed and after I was sure that I couldn't forget it, I shred the paper into tiny pieces. I couldn't risk because if anyone found it and made a call to Bruce, who would I say he is?

Well, today is a great day and since I'm all alone in the house with Crystal and Laura, I make sure Crystal is out there playing and I pick the home handset and dial Bruce's number.

He picks at the third ring and when he hears my voice, I screams at the top of his voice, asking me if I'm okay. I fees him on everything, starting from how I met madam Susan and how she took me home with her that same day. I also tell him how the police came and they couldn't trace my family. I'm shocked to hear that up till now, my uncle Cedric and his army have never stopped searching for me. Well, they can continue since I know i have moon goddess's protection!

He's happy to hear my version of my story and he comments me on how genius I am. I inform him that I'm already schooling and in grade six and he's so shocked, wondering why I didn't tell them to take me to five. Well, I couldn't risk at all and he understands perfectly well.

He feeds me on what's happening at the pack, how uncle Cedric has been a bad alpha, rilling ruthlessly and killing anyone who doesn't agree with his leadership. All these have been fueled by his mate!

We chat for a long time till I hear the phone beeping, an indication that the talktime recharge has been exhausted. I don't have any problem since I'm the one who bought it, besides, we always make a reverse call to our parents therefore they don't recharge the sim card oftenly.

I promise to call Bruce some other time, requesting him never to call that number and that I'll be the one making all calls. He's quite understanding. He doesn't have a problem with that! After hanging up, I delete the number and I place the phone back on the table, hoping my parents didn't call only to find it busy!

I heave a sigh of relief when I hear that Bruce is okay, despite all the killings going on in Riverside Pack.

Why's my uncle so ruthless? What did my late parents and I ever do to him to deserve all that I'll treatment and death?

Sometimes when I'm alone, I always recall the good moments my parents and I had and I sometimes find myself shedding some very bitter tears.

I don't know what I'll ever do to my uncle if I ever lay my hands on him. I'm sure it won't be business as usual.

But again, I can't stop wondering why Bruce decided to help my mother and I. If my mother had managed to climb over the wall, we'd be together wherever we'd be and that would have made everything easier seeing my mother around.

Oh goddess, why did you let this happen to me at such a tender age? I am too young to be an orphan! What does the future hold for me? what does it have in store for me? Will I ever resume the Pack's leadership or will my uncle find me and kill me before then?

Involuntary tears stream down my cheeks and I feel some soft palms wiping them off my face. I look up only to be met by Crystal's tender and innocent eyes searching mine, telling me not to cry as she wipes my tears lovingly. Wow! This is wonderful and I'm glad the little girl already values me as her brother! Am I not lucky?
