Rust City's silent trees make Kate more desperate. The barefoot run causing them to be torn apart by a few thorns along the way. The only sound you hear is her feet hitting the ground.
Her dress that was once as beautiful as her white skin and red hair is now just a dirty old rag on her thin body. Her hair, which hours ago had been in a neat bun by her servant Sara, was flying along with Kate's tears.
That night, which would be one of the special ones for Kate, as she would finally meet her fiancé. The one where her father was willing to hand over his beloved daughter. Little did she know that a fairy-tale monster in old books from the city library was waiting for her when she was leaving the house.
-Sweet Kate…- the thick voice makes Kate more scared and in turn picks up more speed.- Did you know that I hear your pulse and the blood running through your veins? shouted the man.
Kate could barely see the trees in the gloomy darkness of the night. The branches that were friends with her in the days of walking along with Sara through that forest, are now painful enemies making her thin skin cut in contact with them.
-Kate, Kate...- grumbled the man- Sweet Kate... Where are you? -Kate's tears made it difficult for her to escape, which made her trip over a huge tree trunk, which then quickly puts her hand trying to muffle the sound of the scream.
Her legs shook and her arms ached. She was never very religious, but in that moment of despair she asked heaven for help.
- Your blood smells sweet and juicy Kate.-the male voice was closer. Then Kate got up and ran away again.-Enough! - she was brutally thrown against a tree trunk.
Her vision blurred from the force of the blow, which made her hit the back of her head. She knew she couldn't escape. After all, of all the monsters out there, he was the most dangerous.
-We could be happy together sweet Kate.- Now the male voice breathed into her neck.-I would change you anyway. It would be mine forever.- the dark man runs his big hand over her face, taking a lock of Kate's red hair and tangling it in his fingers.
-You're crazy- Kate tries to get up but her head was hurting too much due to all the effort she made. She looked into the red eyes of the boy she will one day call her friend.
"I thought you were my friend." Kate said pulling away from the man.
- And I was Kate. Until you accepted...-she started to walk from one side to the other-Accepted to marry someone else.
- I saw you as a brother only Harry. Accept.- Kate tried to buy time looking around looking for something that was scored so that she could do as in the old books: stick in the heart of a vampire.
"I don't have to accept anything," he yells and grabs Kate's foot soon squeezing making her bone break. Kate's scream echoes through the leaves of the trees scaring some birds that slept in that cold and wet night.
- You should be mine. But if it's not... It won't be anyone's anymore.- Harry takes Kate's forearm, taking a bite with his sharp teeth and starting to empty Kates carpus.
Kate screams at the top of her lungs.
"Stop," she yelled as she struggled. "Stop, please."
Kate's voice was no longer strong enough to call for help. It was too late.
Harry let go of Kate's arm, which was still hanging by a thread. A short, short wire.
"I…I…trusted you." Kate said in a broken voice.
- And I loved you Kate- Harry wipes his mouth that was smeared with blood with his shirt sleeve. He walks over to Kate and makes her sit with her back against the same log she was thrown on. - Is that how you thank me? - he takes in his face that was starting to turn whiter than it already was - I wanted to give you eternity. Wasn't that enough?-Kate uses some of the strength she has and takes Harry's hands away from her face.
- You would never be enough... Enough for me Harry. I... - Kate's eyes were heavy and tired - I... hate you...
-Goodbye Kate.- and then Harry breaks Kate's neck making her life escape.
Harry was sure that that day, on one of Rust's densest, coldest nights, he had killed Kate Hamilton.
Sweet Kate Hamilton.
But he didn't know that a war had just started.
A war against Kate.
