Chapter 3

Her timid appearance made me look like the villain.

"I'm not upset, am I? You guys carry on. I just remembered I have some work to attend to, so I'll be leaving first."

I smiled lightly, grabbing my bag to leave.

"Are you still upset about Carter and Hazel watching the meteor shower?"

Nasr deliberately brought it up, his gaze full of provocation.

Hearing this, Hazel spoke up, "I'm sorry, Mira. I was feeling down at that time, and Carter thought of this to cheer me up. Carter, you should apologize to Mira."

Carter frowned, "It was just a meteor shower. Why should I apologize?"

His words caused the atmosphere to turn tense.

Hazel, unseen by him, smirked at me, silently claiming her victory.

How cunning Hazel was!

Did Carter really think I still cared about him?

Did he think a simple placation could make us put this behind us?

He never felt he was wrong.

I chuckled, "Right, what is he to apologize for? The meteor shower was quite beautiful. You should go to see it next time."

With that, I left without looking back.

As I closed the door, I heard Hazel's voice. "Carter, you should go apologize. Mira is clearly upset."

"Pay her no mind. She'll be over it in a few days."

His words made me laugh in anger. He took it for granted that I would forgive him just because I loved him.

Damn it!

I walked out of the hotel, seething with rage.

The autumn night was cool with a gentle breeze.

I strolled along the noisy streets.

All around me were couples, while I was alone.

Before Hazel came back, Carter was extremely attentive, treating me like a treasure.

How did we end up like this?

I breathed heavily, feeling suffocated.

Seeing a roadside stall selling roast chicken, I pondered for a moment before buying one.

Holding the chicken, I imagined it as the ungrateful heart of Carter, furiously tearing into it. Screw him! Did he think I couldn’t live without him?

I wiped my mouth and headed home.

Just as I got home, a message from Carter arrived.

"Are you home?"

I glanced at it and didn't reply.

Soon after, he sent another message. "Everyone present didn't eat well today because of you. We'll host a meal to make it up to Nasr."

I still didn't reply.

Apparently losing patience, he called.

I put my phone away, ignoring it.

After I finished my nightly routine, the ringing finally stopped.

Before sleeping, I habitually browsed social media and stumbled upon an update Hazel posted five minutes ago.

Carter appeared to have called a cab. He and Hazel were sitting in the back seat.

In the photo, he was lazily resting his eyes while Hazel coyly looked at the camera from his arms.

The caption read, "After all these years, I'm still your first choice."

My lips curled into a faint sneer, and I left a comment below. "Congratulations."

Just then, a special ringtone rang in my ears.
