Chapter 1
The video quickly went viral online, and the comments section was filled with blessings, declaring them a perfect match.
With the joyful laughter from my phone, the feast before me sunk my heart to the depths.
Though I had not cooked it myself, I had at least arranged it with my own hands.
Today was our first anniversary. Carter had said he would come home early to celebrate with me but called in the afternoon to say something urgent had come up and he would be late.
I had eaten early and had already set the leftover cold dishes on the table, posing as if I had been waiting a long time.
I was furious.
The urgent matter he mentioned was to watch a meteor shower with Hazel Weston? I had put on an act for so long for this?
In the video, Carter Strauss's handsome face was filled with affection, looking tenderly at Hazel as he smiled.
It was a smile I had never received from him.
Before this, I had thought he was naturally unsmiling.
At that moment, I was secretly pleased, thinking it was just like him to be so.
Now, watching this video, I made a face of disgust. His smiling face looked nothing like him. It was hideously unattractive.
Thinking of the real Carter, I opened a bottle of red wine and drank silently.
The bitter taste spread in my mouth, mirroring the longing I felt for him.
Damn! Why hadn't he returned yet?
I picked up my phone to call Carter, mainly to see how shameless he could be.
The phone was quickly answered, and Carter's voice was as cold as ever. "What is it?"
While he spoke, I could clearly hear the sound of a cheering crowd.
After a pause of two seconds, I swallowed the wine in my mouth and asked softly, "Where are you?"
"At the office. If you have something to say, say it." It seemed he had moved away from the crowd as the cheers were dying down.
His voice was still calm, showing no sign of guilt from lying.
I glanced at the video on my tablet, feeling even more frustrated.
"Let's break up."
"What are you playing at now?"
I scoffed coldly, "Spend some time online. You’re an online celebrity."
With that, I hung up the phone.
Since I had brought up breaking up, I shouldn't stay at his place any longer.
I looked at the cold food on the table and called someone to handle it, declaring that this jerk didn't even deserve the leftovers!
Then, I had someone pack up my belongings.
After sorting everything out, I had the chauffeur take me back to my villa.
After college, my parents bought me a small villa in this city.
Due to my pretense of poverty, Carter had no idea I owned a property or that my family was wealthy.
He also didn't know that his current position at the company was largely thanks to my 70% effort.
After getting together with Carter, I moved into his place.
Now, I thought about it. The distance between our houses was like the distance between us.
Returning to my long-missed haven, I tidied up a bit before washing up and going to bed.
The next day, I found only a few messages on my phone.
"Why are you throwing a tantrum?"
"Come back after you calm down. Don't be too willful. How will you live out there without me?"
It seemed he had come home last night and found out I had moved out.
I didn't reply to his messages and went about my day.
This wasn't the first time something like this had happened.
Whenever Hazel had an issue, she called him, even in the middle of the night when a clap of thunder startled her and she couldn't sleep.
Furious, I used to question him before.
He said, "You’re overthinking it."
Every time, after abandoning me for Hazel, he would bring me a small cake afterward to appease me.
Each time, seeing him hold the small cake so sincerely, I forgave him because all I cared about was that he resembled my ideal image.
A piece of cheap little cake was just like Carter’s love for me. Honestly, I didn't care for them at all.
