Chapter 4
Her face at the end of our conversation was priceless, who knew this was all it took to make my best friend finally shut up.
Her mouth was permanently fixed in the ‘o’ shape and I fear it will not come out of it anytime soon.
“I'm sorry” she started saying slowly as if she was scared of her own voice.
“You mean… you're telling me that… wait a damn minute” she said, tripping over her words.
I nodded my head helping her, “Yes. He's my boss. I had a one night stand with my new boss and bitch it is a miracle I haven't become unemployed overnight because it would be so unprofessional if anyone found out I slept with my boss after I had just been employed.”
She had completely lost it, one of her eyes was twitching consistently and that action alone made me feel like I had broken her. Haha. Breaking news: Lady breaks her best friend in earth shattering discovery.
She looked at me incredulous,“You have no idea how crazy this all sounds do you?”
I could tell she was still processing this information. So was I. But I was honestly over it.
“Seriously, it's not that big of a deal now that I think about it. I'm not going to be sleeping with my boss so it's not that deep, I think?” I said.
I don't know who I was trying to convince, me or her. Either way I hope it was working.
But thinking about my boss made me feel a type of way again and I just couldn't understand it.
“Ughh but there's just something about him that I just don't understand. The way he talks, the way he smells. Oh and the way he walks, hmmmm” I said reminiscing.
I turned to look at her because it had gotten too quiet in here but she was giving me a look I couldn't decipher.
“Erica, don't tell me you're falling for your boss” she asked, her eyes widening as she spoke.
“Hell no, girl what are you talking about?” I all but scream at her.
She was crazy for even suggesting that I can not be falling for him. That was not on my agenda of things to do. And also, it was unethical and he was my boss.
I reaffirm this to her, “Trust me girl, there's no way in falling for him. He's hot, yes but I'm not that naive. There's just something about that man”
I sighed dreamily and just melted into the sofa thinking of him.
“I'm happy you got some action though. It had been a hot minute” she said, suddenly changing the topic.
“Haha, yeah I was beginning to grow cobwebs down there” I said, chuckling to myself.
“Oh now I can't say for sure but maybe this is the start of a beautiful thing” she said suspiciously.
“No no, don't go getting any weird ideas. I know how that brain of yours works and I'm not sure I want to know what else is going on in there. Uh uh” I said, shaking my head vehemently.
She just laughed at me and picked up my food to eat. Oh no she didn't.
“Excuse me young lady, that's my food you're currently trying to eat. I could kill you for that, you know?” I said reaching to snatch it from her hands before she could even retaliate.
I lifted an eyebrow at her and she just smiled sheepishly.
I shook my head at her, “You need to get checked one of these days you're not acting yourself at all”.
She bristled at my tone, “What the hell do you mean by that? I am perfectly fine thank you very much”.
I laughed, running away with my food to escape her wrath.
The next morning I woke up to a text message from my very arrogant boss telling me that I need to pick up his morning coffee from a store across town before I get to the office.
My eyes nearly bulged out of its sockets when I saw it, “You've got to be kidding me”.
I rushed to shower and put on something presentable while booking an Uber that'll take me to the store.
I was flying through my house in a frenzy when I realized I didn't have any shoes on.
“Shit” I said running back to wear something comfortable but smart.
“Perfect. But oh fuck– I'm going to be so late. Is he trying to fire me? This is just impossible” I complained on my way to the cab waiting for me outside.
I got to the coffee shop in record time thanks to my driver who was driving above the recommended speed limit but I wasn't complaining.
Come to find out the shop was already packed and a queue had reached the door. I was going to be here forever.
“You've got to be kidding me” I screamed, kicking the curb in the process.
I made it across town with his coffee and I was making my way into the elevator when the receptionist called out to me.
“Good morning, I just thought to warn you. He's asked for you twice now, he's not in a good mood” she said scrunching her face in worry.
I wanted to scream. I wasn't in a good mood too but I just thanked her and left for the office.
While in the elevator I took some calming breaths to try and pace myself but it didn't seem to help.
I swear, any little thing was going to set me off and I wasn't at all ready for the onslaught of emotions right now.
I walked into the office and the first thing I noticed was him standing at the window facing the street, meaning he had been watching me come into the building.
“Good morning sir–” I began to say but he cut me off.
“Wanna tell me why you're 20 minutes late to work on your second day here?” He said, turning to glare at me.
