Chapter 2
Ava's POV
"What is your name?" he asked, his brow raised and furrowed.
A-Ava," I managed to answer, my voice stammering.
"Ava what?" he asked impatiently, but I didn't answer him; instead, my face was fixed on the floor.
How would my mate reject me because I'm a servant? It wasn't my fault I turned out to be a servant; I didn't choose my fate myself.
"Ava what? Are you deaf? Do you want to defile me, little mate? Are you courting death?" He shouted, his voice vibrating in the corridor, and my leg shook in anxiety.
"Ava Johnson," I answered, avoiding his gaze.
"Good girl, you shouldn't make me shout at you like that," he said, clearing his throat.
"I, Ethan, Alpha of the Crescent Pack, reject you, Ava Johnson, from the Silver Moon Pack as my mate. With that, he left with a smile dancing on his lip, not minding if I accepted his rejection or not.
These words rang in my ears a million times as I made my way back to the maid's quarter.
"Everything was supposed to fall into place after feeling the mate bond, but why did he reject me?" I clenched my hands tightly as I walked inside the vast compound meant for the maids.
A sigh escaped my lips, and as I thought more about the painful rejection, I felt hopeless, pained, and sad.
"Hum?" My eyes perked upon hearing the sound.
"What's going on?" I muttered, looking confused. I slowly made my way towards the place, my feet touching the hard floor.
Directed by the noise, I finally saw a huge crowd of maids outside the exit that led to the front palace.
"What's going on?" I hurriedly made my way there and was even surprised to see the people around me.
"Can you tell me what's going on here?" I gently tapped a maid.
She turned towards me, red-faced and excited. What's she excited about?
"An old lady has been kneeling at the front palace for an hour, and the things spilling out of her mouth are so funny." She laughed, and a frown crossed my face.
I looked around to see if there was any place I could get a picture of who the woman was.
" Alpha! Please have mercy! " A familiar voice cried out, and my feet froze in place.
"My Alpha, have mercy!" The voice sounded again. My heart turned cold as I slowly turned back to the crowd, exactly where the voice was coming from.
" Grandmother!" I dashed forward, pushing through the crowd. Ignoring all the curses around me, I walked towards the place where the woman kneeled with an accelerating heartbeat.
I slowly walked towards the woman and stopped a few feet from her.
"Grandmother?" I called out, and the woman's body tensed up. She slowly turned in my direction, and I saw her red face.
"Get out of here!" She yelled, causing me to flinch back in fear.
"What's happening, grandma? Why are you attacking me like a stranger?" I asked, feeling confused.
Why is she acting so strange?
"Did you do anything wrong to the king? Don't worry, I will beg with you!" I hurriedly got on my knees and bowed to the floor.
"Please have mercy on us!" I cried out but screamed as I felt a sharp pain in my rib.
"Don't you dare get yourself involved in this? Alpha Zeth! Alpha of the prestigious Silver Moon pack I have a confession to make and hope that the royal family forgives me." Grandma sobbed heavily and then took out a wooden box.
"Princess Isabella is my real granddaughter, and Ava is your biological daughter! She revealed taking out two items from the box.
I stood there, stunned by the sudden revelation. Everything went silent, and not even crickets were heard.
A strange feeling brewed in me as I stared at the woman I had lived my life with. The only person who l have, even if she didn't love me, why would she turn against me...why is she doing this?
"Why are you doing this, Grandma? I listened to my soft voice that could barely make a whisper.
Great fatigue overwhelmed me as I stood there like an empty vessel.
"This was the royal necklace the baby wore after birth, and this was given to her by the queen. I had to switch the baby at birth because I didn't want my daughter's child to live in poverty. I couldn't afford a living for her, so I did the unthinkable, which was switching the babies at birth. Please forgive me!" She begged.
"Don't say that grandmother," I begged, but she shot me a glare and screamed hate.
"Step back! She did nothing wrong. I am sure she's tired due to the stress she has been through. I yelled, trying to defend her." I quickly rushed towards her and held her cold hands tightly.
"I do not want to believe that my entire life has been a lie. Please tell me that you are joking when you say I am not your real child. Please! I've gone through a lot, and the last thing I want to try now is to lose you. Please don't neglect me!" I begged, but she shoved her hands on me, and there the real 'love' in her eyes became clear to me.
"I will never accept the monster that killed my daughter. If not for you, my daughter would have been alive and I wouldn't have had the thought to switch my granddaughter and you." She spat out angrily and pushed me away.
I was too shocked by the revelation to feel the pain. I was already used to pain, and there's nothing you can do about it.
"Grandmother, please! I begged," but she took out a necklace. It was an ordinary-looking necklace, but somehow I had this connection with it.
I gently stood up, feeling lightheaded. My mind was in a mess due to the sudden revelation and previous blame.
"My king! Please have mercy!" Her voice echoed in the palace, but no one answered her.
"Have mercy!" She begged.
"Why now of all times? Why did you have to reveal it now?" I asked, and she stared at me.
The love in her eyes was no more, and all that was left was desperation.
"I won't let my granddaughter get killed by the heartless alpha. I will never permit her to get married to Apha Ethan! I'd rather die than let her marry him!" She shouted.
I held my chest tightly and suddenly felt dizzy. I shook my head, trying to stand still, but the world was turning upside down.
I tried to speak but noticed how heavy my lips were.
Why me? Only me today!
My mate rejected me, and my grandmother... What kind of revelation is this?
"He-"
My feet gave way, and my body collapsed to the ground. I struggled to breathe, but it was impossible.
The only thing I saw was the darkness that overshadowed me.
"Is this death?"
