Laura’s POV:
Things as Alpha and Luna had been going better than I expected. The coronation ceremony took place right after the wedding. Our wedding night was amazing, but for some reason, I couldn't help but wonder if it would have been better with my mate by my side instead.
Now, after being married for two years, I find myself questioning my decision more and more. Lately, I've been considering the possibility of a better life had I found my mate.
Is he alive or dead? This is a question that has been constantly on my mind lately. But I have to remind myself that I am fortunate to have found a man whom I love, even without a mate.
"Hey love, are you okay?" Alex asked, interrupting my train of thought.
"Yes, why wouldn't I be? I'm fine," I replied quickly.
"Okay. I'm urgently needed at the borders. I'll be back in a few days," he said, leaving me puzzled.
"But you were just there a few days ago, and now you're going back? I don't think you need to be there so urgently. There are guards for a reason, and if you have to go, why don't I come with you?" I asked.
“I don't think that's necessary Laura, I don't need you there,” Alex replied, not convincing me.
“ I can't just sit around doing nothing Alex, you don't seem to include me in important matters regarding the pack. I am your Luna, or did you forget about that?” I insisted.
“ And I am your Alpha! Look, I don't have time for this, okay? I will see you when I get back.’’ He replied irritated, before walking out of the pack house.
Was I being unreasonable? Or did I do the right thing? I needed answers to my questions before I lost my mind. I just simply want to fulfill my duties as Luna to the pack.
I decided going out for a run in the forest would do me a lot of good, especially relieving me of some of the tension that I felt. I haven't let my wolf Maya Out in a while now, since I was always at the pack house as instructed by Alex.
I ran deep into the forest and I couldn't help but feel more free than I have in a long time. The sound of leaves rustling and the feel of the wind on my fur was exhilarating. Soon, I noticed that I wasn't alone, another creature was present as the leaves rattled.
“ Show yourself now!’’ I commanded with curiosity after shifting and covering up.
A big black wolf walked out of the bushes, looking at the wolf. There was something familiar about it. I don't know what it was but we have met before. It looked at me with its eyes and I couldn't understand the expressions but I did notice a bit of affection, if I was reading it wrong.
“Who are you? ‘’ I inquired.
The wolf ran into the forest as I asked it the question, and I wondered why. It didn't seem dangerous but curious.
I got back to the pack house, took a bath, had some dinner, and retired, a routine that I had adapted over the past year following Alex's frequent trips which he tagged as sometimes business trips, and sometimes family trips which got me thinking about how the only family of his that I have met is his cousin, Sonia.
Only Sonia was the only family member of Alex present at our wedding, My best friend who hasn't been here since after the wedding either.
“ I have to go to my mother's pack, I haven't met any of them before and Dad insisted I reconnect with her people, it would help me feel closer to her, hence the reason for this trip, I will miss you, Luna.’’ Were the last words told to me by my best friend the last time we spoke?
“Come in’’ was the reply I gave to the light knock at the door which interrupted my thoughts.
“ Good evening Luna, sorry for disturbing you, but the Alpha of the crescent moon pack is here to see you.’’ The maid stated.
“ Okay, notify him that I will be with him shortly,’’ I replied with so much joy.
I hurried down as fast as I could, I was really happy about this information, I couldn't believe my ears, that he had come to visit.
“Uncle Sam, you are here.’’ I didn't believe my eyes for a while until he pulled me in, for a hug.
“Oh, my favorite Niece, how I have missed you.’’ Uncle Sam said.
I haven't seen him since I was 18, he usually visits the pack every 3 years. He was my mother's brother and her only family. He, together with his pack was also my dad's best ally, he was my dad's best friend.
But, here I was having mixed feelings regarding his visit because he wasn't there for my parents' burial and hasn't been here either since their death. As much as I wanted him here, I wished he had come earlier.
“ Where have you been all this time Uncle Sam? You even missed your sister’s and my dad's burial. Now suddenly you show up? I said tearfully and immediately I untangled myself from the hug. “And it's Luna Laura now.’’ I further explained.
“ I know nothing I say will make up for my absence, especially with everything that you had to go through alone dear.’’ He said with so much regret in his voice.
“ We were attacked a few days before the death of your father, who was supposed to visit, the day of his visit to my pack for a business meeting was scheduled for 2 days after his death.’’ He explained
“ Rogues attacked the pack, they broke down our defense, and their numbers seemed to have increased so much. We lost a lot of our warriors but were able to get the rest of the pack to our safe house which was in a secluded place, where we could lay low for a while.” He continued
I listen attentively as he explained his plight.
I didn't know about your family tragedy until a few weeks ago when we moved back to the pack house because there was no way we could have gotten any information where we were located. I thought I would explain everything to your father or he would probably be aware of all these when he learns of the attack, but I never would have thought that he would lose his life and my only sister had died.’’ He expressed calmly.
“ I didn't know about this. I thought you had abandoned me and probably didn't care. I am so sorry uncle.’’ I said tearfully.
“ It's fine dear, I should be the one apologizing.’’ He replied, reaching out for another hug.
“ So, it's Luna Laura now? I did my investigations and found out that he had married one Alex and he is now Alpha? You didn't find your mate?’’.
“ No, I didn't uncle, it seems I wasn't destined to have one or he is probably dead,’’ I replied, my head still buried in his chest.
“ No dear, don't say that. I am so sorry that you had to go through all these alone.’’ He said.
“ It's okay Uncle Sam. What matters is that you are here now.’’ I replied feeling better than I felt this morning.
“ Are you sure about this Alex dear?’’ He asked raising a brow.
“ Of course uncle. He is one of the best decisions I have made for myself and the pack.’’ I replied not feeling so confident as I had the first time I introduced him as the man I wanted to marry to the council of elders.
“ Well, I did my research on him and I don't like the report that I am getting on him, Laura.'' He said.
