Chapter 9

Unlike last year, instead of hanging out with his friends, Eddy went straight home after school. He locked himself up in his room. He looked across from the window to have a sneak-peek into Evy’s room, but she had drawn the curtains. She never closed them, but the messages were clear that she needed space. He opened his Facebook account and thought of adding Evy to his friend’s list. When she left Woodstock, she deleted her account. But he guessed that since she is back now, she might activate her account.

He thought for a minute and decided to send her a friend request. He was a bit apprehensive about the situation and was staring at his laptop for quite some time, but still, there was no reply. When he was about to give up, he had a notification that said Evelyn Brook accepted his friend’s request. He took a deep breath. Eddy was glad that she at least accepted his request. That’s a start, right?

After fifteen minutes or so, Eddy’s mom called him down and asked him to deliver the cupcakes to Mrs. Brook. He took the cupcakes and made his way towards Evelyn’s home. Her mom and his mom are pretty good friends, and so are he and Evy. Well, they were before he goofed everything up.

He pressed the bell and waited for the door to open. He secretly wished for Evy to open it, and luckily his wish was granted. Evelyn was standing in front of the gate with nothing but shorts and a casual loose tee shirt with a frown on her face. She looked adorable.

“Mom asked me to give this cupcake to your mom.” He told her. She looked down towards the cupcake, and there was a glint in her eyes. Evy always had a soft spot for sweets. She loves them.

“Mom, Edward is here to see you.” Without giving Eddy a second glance, she rushed to her room. She didn’t even speak to him, just ignored him.

“OH, it’s you, Eddy.” Mrs. Brook came towards the door.

Eddy gave her the cupcakes and was about to leave when Mrs. Brook stopped him.

“Edward, why don’t you come and join Evelyn, Max, and Hailey for their movie marathon?”

“Uh, no. Thank you, Mrs. Brook. I have some work to complete.” He immediately made an excuse.

“Okay! And call me Ella; you are family, and as it is, Mrs. Brook makes me feel old.”

“Okay, Ella,”

Eddy left and went to the nearby park. He sat on the bench. He was speechless. Every year on the first day of their school, Eddy, Evy, and Hailey used to have a movie marathon. But instead of him, Max was continuing their tradition. He broke their tradition last to last year as he ditched them for his new friends but never once thought that his action might hurt them.

He even didn’t like the way Evy acknowledged him. He felt like a stranger. He remembers once when he treated her the same way when she came to his home to pass a message from her mom to his. Eddy didn’t want his friends to tease him or know about the fact that he cared about the beautiful nerd standing in front of his house. But to his dismay, all his pals started laughing at her. Well, he did want them to take it as a joke, but he never thought it would have hurt Evy so much.

The situation was the same, but the only difference was that now the tables have turned.

Now he is really having his doubts about the theory of Karma.
