After I said my farewells to Mark and some of the camera crew, I walked right into someone. Normally, it wouldn't be a big deal but when you bump into people like Melanie Rodriguez, this happens:
"Oh-em-gee! What have you done?! My blouse is completely ruined. You have no idea how much money this costs, you bloody idi-" the rant stopped and she lifted her eyes to look at her victim. "Hey, Damy."
Step One: The Nickname.
She steps closer to me and puts her hand on my arm. Then she rubs.
Step Two: Physical Contact.
"You're arms feel really big and hard. Have you been working out?" She fluttered her eyelashes in an attempt to look innocent.
Step three and four: Compliments and Sexual Innuendos.
"Yes, I've always been working out. You wouldn't notice, would you? All those men you've been busy with. Any who, I'd really love to stay and chat, but I need to get home. To the girl I love." Lily. I was talking about Lily.
Who else would I be talking about?
Step five: realise you've been rejected and walk away defeated.
And she does.
"Daddy!" A small figure shouts as they fling themself on top of me as soon as I step out of my car in front of my parents' house.
"Hey, Princess. How was your day with Momma and Pops?" I ask already knowing the answer.
"Momma and me colour and eat yummy food. But Pops playing hide and seek in his work room." My dad had a tendency to get distracted by this work really easily, if there was one thing that was wrong he'd start all over again until he was satisfied. Therefore, it was normal for him to be hiding out in his study.
"I know Pops is always busy, but maybe one day we can all go to dinner together, and we can invite Rose to come with us. How does that sound?" Just as Lily starts to nod enthusiastically, a voice interrupts her.
"Who's Rose?" My mother stands at the front of her house, hands on hips and an accusing glare cast on her face. The loose blonde hair strands waving in the wind making her look all the more intimidating. I love her. I really do. But sometimes, she scares the sh*t out of me.
"Rosaline, the girl we met at the ice cream shop?" I tell her, but I doubt she remembers who she is. I just told her how someone fainted in Delishice, and she assumed it was because she recognised me.
"Why would you invite her along with us? Is there something you haven't told me?" Hiding something from my mother is like lying to God himself. Impossible.
"I'm not hiding any thing. Lily and I have become good friends with Rose and her brother, that's all."
"Best fwiends! Wosie say she my best fwiend!" Lily interjected, making my mother smile at her fondly.
"This Rose, seems to have a big impact on both of you. What's so special about her?" Then she gasps as if realising something. "Are you dating?"
"What? No! I would've told you. But after I ask her out! I mean, not that I.. ugh. Mom!" She was messing with my head. Even if she did ask just one question, it hurts my head.
After a couple minutes of silence, Mom turns to walk inside, Lily and I trail behind her. Silence, with my mom, is never good.
As soon as we get inside, Lily runs upstairs somewhere. Probably to her room- yes, she has her own room in her grandparents' home. Mom turns to me and after a few seconds of staring, she speaks.
"So...You're going to ask her out?"
"Maybe. Maybe not." I say, I'm still confused myself as to what I should do.
"You like this girl, don't you?" At my nod, she continues, "then what's there to think about? Ask the girl out!"
"Mom, there's something else too. Rose...She isn't like me and you." I admit, hoping she doesn't jump to conclusions.
"What is she then, a prostitute? Or maybe an alien?" Hah. Mom, you're hilarious. If I said that out loud, she probably would have slapped me across the head.
"No, Mom. She's normal physically. Beyond normal physical-" there's the slap on the head "-ow! Anyway, she's normal physically, but mentally..." I pause, making my mom a little impatient.
"WHAT?"
"She's crazy. No. She has a mind of a 6 year old, so she's not crazy but people might think she is."
"So what you're trying to tell me is that, this Rose girl acts as if she is just a couple years older than your daughter? How old is she exactly?" Good question.
"She's nineteen, and she's insanely smart, Ma. And she's beautiful with her light brown hair and grey eyes with specks of blue and green. And Lily loves her and she loves Lily back." My rambling is cut short when I catch my mother mumbling to herself.
"She might be crazy, but so is he. He's crazy for her."
Later that night, when Lily had gone to bed, I was sitting on the sofa after talking to Mark on the phone. He had told me that we only have a few more scenes to film then I never have to act with Diva again. Unless, of course, I accept an offer with her casted in the movie. God knows I wouldn't.
The ringtone of my phone blasts out loud and I rush to pick the call up before the sound wakes up the exhausted princess from her sleep. She's always been a deep sleeper, however, I refuse to take any risks when it comes to the health of my Princess.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Damy! It's me, Rose. Did you know it was me?" Ah, my beautiful Angel's voice always puts me in a better mood.
"Hey, Angel. No, I didn't know it was you. But I'm loving the surprise." I actually didn't since I didn't look at the caller ID.
"Tommy told me you wanted to tell me something. Tell me, Damy. Tommy is very rude and doesn't tell me. You'll tell me right?" Subject change much? I knew what she was talking about. After Thomas and I exchanged numbers, he told me that he would prepare Rose so she wouldn't be too surprised when I asked.
I didn't know how to do this. Normally, it would be so easy. I would just put my 'Damien Anderson, the arrogant jerk' face on and done. But no, this was Rose we were talking about. She's seen me with my daughter, and that 'me', is the real me.
"What I wanted to tell you was more of a question than an actual statement. I wanted to ask if.. um, what I'm trying to say is... you and I out with me?" All she does is laugh. Rude. I actually think I did really good considering how nervous I was.
No? Okay. Tough crowd.
"Damy, you're funny. Just like Lily. Oh! What's my bestie doing?" This girl really has to stop changing subjects in the middle of the conversation.
"You're bestie is sleeping. But can I get an answer?"
"What answer? You didn't ask anything, silly." God, this is harder than in the movies. Do you know what? Fudge the movies, I'm doing this my way.
"Will you go on a date with me, Rose?" Straight to the point and simple. She should understand that, right?
"A date?" Wow. Does she not know what a date is now? She continues, "like Sonny and Chad went on?" Oh my. What am I to do with this girl?
"Yes, like Sonny and Chad went on." Never in a million years did I think that watching Disney shows would benefit me at anytime of my life, however, hearing her squeal of what I'm hoping is excitement, it was definitely worth it.
"Can I? That would be so cool. Like, Chad is so nice to Sonny, but not to anyone else. Of you know why? No? Because he likes her. Do you like me, like Chad likes Sonny, Damy?" She doesn't even give me time to answer. "Because I like you. I had a dream last night that you were Chad and I was Sonny and then-" I cut her off before she could remind me of my childhood nightmares.
"So, is that a yes to the date?"
"The date? Oh! Yes, I said yes to the date. It's going to be cool! Where are we going, Damy?" Hearing my Angel being so enthusiastic towards our date made me feel completely content, as if a heavy load had been lifted off my shoulder.
She said yes!
