Chapter 7 Charity Banquet (3) The Scumbag Finally Gets What He Deserves

Hannah's face slightly changed, thinking that this man truly wasn't afraid of causing a scene. Charles looked at Oscar's departing figure with disdain and said, "What a spendthrift."

Fortunately, Charles was arrogant enough to never suspect that Hannah would have any connection with a man like Oscar.

But Hannah smirked. The so-called "spendthrift" was someone that even you, Charles, couldn't handle no matter what meant you used.

"Let's go." Hannah linked her arm with Charles and entered the banquet hall. Returning to the hall this time, Hannah noticeably became more proactive. She politely engaged in conversations with everyone, sipped her drink, and executed all the high society etiquette perfectly. Charles was somewhat surprised by her change. He couldn't help but ask, "Hannah, I feel like you've changed a lot. You were least adept at conversing with strangers, but now you seem so at ease."

Actually, it was simply a matter of not wanting to for her, not an inability.

She smiled gracefully and replied, "Seeing how exceptional you are, I have to strive to keep up."

This statement was clearly a compliment to Charles, with witch Charles felt pleased.

"Silly girl, isn't my excellence meant to make your life better?" said Charles.

Hannah chuckled but say nothing.

"Besides, if you're learning to socialize, I’ll be worried about you."

"I'll take it step by step." Hannah truly detested his false sentiments. Fortunately, at that moment...

The lights in the hall suddenly dimmed. Tonight's theme, the charity auction, officially began. A man walked onto the stage, illuminated by a beam of light descending directly upon him.

"Hello, everyone! It's an honor to have all of you distinguished guests here tonight at our annual charity banquet in Kensbury City. On behalf of Kensbury's charitable organization, I would like to express our gratitude for your presence..." The speech captured everyone's attention.

With the opening remarks completed, the host wasted no time and began explaining and auctioning off the items for tonight.

There were some murmurs from the audience.

"Is there anything you like? As a wedding gift for you." Charles asked Hannah.

Hannah remembered back when the charity auction started, Charles had called her to ask if she had any preferences. She said no, and then Charles gifted Sandra the item being auctioned off, which caused a stir in Kensbury when it was "accidentally" exposed by Sandra. At the time, Sandra's residence was also exposed. Hannah had to explain for Charles on Twitter.

Now, looking back, if it weren't for the online exposure of Sandra's address, she couldn't have directly sent a private detective to take the photos.

"I heard that the highlight auction item tonight is the sapphire from the 80th-century Queen Diana's crown. I've seen pictures of it, and I think it's beautiful." Said Hannah.

"Alright." Charles readily agreed. In fact, he was somewhat surprised. Hannah had never been fond of such things, and she always saved money for him. Today, he had already promised to auction a bracelet for Sandra, and now it was clear that the budget wouldn't be enough.

Hannah intentionally didn't show that she noticed Charles's thoughts and focused her attention entirely on the stage.

Finally, the time came for the last item to be auctioned.

The host exaggeratedly introduced many details, and then hammered down, "The sapphire, starting price of 5 million, increments of 100 thousand! Let the bidding begin!"

Many people started bidding, "6 million!"

"6.5 million!"

"6.8 million!"

"10 million!" Suddenly, a familiar male voice rang out in the darkness.

It wasn't Charles, who was about to raise his hand when he was momentarily stunned by this price. Everyone in the room was taken aback by the sudden and incongruous bid.

Unconsciously, all eyes turned to Oscar. At that moment, Susan stood beside Hannah and couldn't help but blurt out, "This playboy is spendthrift!"

"He's just relying on his family's money, more capable of causing trouble than achieving success!" Charles sneered and raised his hand, "11 million!"

His pride and self-esteem didn't want to be outdone.

"15 million!" Oscar spoke up again.

Charles's face couldn't hide his displeasure.

"16 million!" Charles increased the bid.

"20 million!"

Charles was being compared in terms of wealth, but his budget for tonight was only 10 million; at most it couldn't exceed 15 million.

At this moment, many people focused their attention on Charles. They all had a look of amusement. Outsiders didn't know that the Sawyer Group had been in financial distress recently. Coming to participate in the charity auction today was originally meant to prove that everything was fine with the Sawyer Group and cover up those rumors in order to secure bank funding and investments from other businesses. They could still manage to come up with a little over 10 million, but to suddenly produce 20 million or even more was clearly impossible.

Charles was trembling because of anger. In all his years, he had never been so embarrassed.

"20 million, first bid!" the host announced loudly when no one else raised the price. Oscar didn't even glance at Charles; he had a carefree expression on his face. And that made Charles feel like Oscar didn't consider him at all.

"20 million, second bid!" the host spoke again.

"20 million, third..."

"25 million!" Hannah suddenly spoke up. Her clear female voice caused a commotion in the banquet hall. Charles didn't expect her to suddenly make a bid. He couldn't help but whisper, "Oscar is deliberately raising the price. Don't fall for his trick."

Hannah ignored him.

When Oscar called out "30 million", Hannah was ready to follow. Charles, in front of everyone, directly pulled Hannah's hand down. Everyone noticed it. Hannah looked at him too. Charles did act on impulse because he simply couldn't afford this expense. Facing everyone's gaze, he didn't offer any explanation to Hannah.

"Since you like it so much, we'll give it to you, Mr Wells." Said Charles.

"I heard that this was prepared by you as a wedding gift for Miss Cooper. Are you sure you don't want it?"

Charles was blue in the face. It was obvious that Oscar deliberately went against him, giving him no face. Oscar smiled lightly, and said in a magnetic voice, "It's said that you love Miss Cooper very much, Mr Sawyer. I thought by raising the price a bit, it would better express you affection. It seems I went too far."

"Love is not measured by money." Charles replied firmly.

Oscar laughed. "You speak the truth, Mr Sawyer. So, are you sure you don't want it?" asked he.

"No need to thank me." Charles said.

Oscar seemed to direct his gaze towards Hannah. Every time, Hannah could feel something in his gaze. She pretended not to care, just took a quick glance, but still, he made her feel uneasy.
