Jaelyn's standpoint.
After such a humiliating event and even having MacKenzie grin in my pain. I considered running away but remembering my mom's hope, I braced myself and went to my next class.
I changed into the spare clothes I had in my bag, a habit I picked up from commuting to the hospital for a long while.
“Wow. She certainly has the guts to come back after such an embarrassing moment. If I were the one, would have dug a hole and died there.” A girl said once I stepped into class and took my seat.
“Well, you undeniably had low expectations for the runt Mrs. Angela personally handpicked. She is meant to have guts, or she will break too easily. And you know that's no fun.”
Following that, I was mocked and jeered at wherever I went. They weren't even being discreet about it. They were even being obnoxiously loud like they were worried I wouldn't hear.
I saw Julia in class, and she kept glaring coldly at me, making me wonder what I had done wrong.
Thankfully, my basic schedule meant that I closed earlier than the other students. A concept I didn't understand.
When I stepped out, Asher was waiting for me.
“Good day, Miss.” He greeted and from his expression, I knew he would rather be anywhere else.
After such a day, his disdain cut deeper.
“Good afternoon, Asher.”
“Where are we heading?”
“Nowhere. Just take me home.” I replied, sighing tiredly.
I didn't have a social life anyway.
At home, Alpha Masen was going through some documents on the sofa.
“Good afternoon, Uncle.”
“Afternoon, Jaelyn. How was your day at school?” He asked without taking his gaze off the documents.
I looked away guiltily as I lied through my teeth. “It was fine.” It was not my intention to bother him more than I already did.
Besides, what happened today involved Enzo, his son, so I would rather not create an awkward air.
That made him look up at me. His brow was raised.
“That's nice. Did you make any friends?”
I tried to hide my expression, but I had a feeling he had seen through me.
“Yeah. The school guide, MacKenzie, was nice to me.”
“Is that so? I'm relieved to hear that.” He smiled warmly before burying his head in the documents again.
Seeing that he didn't have anything to say anymore, I turned to leave.
“Jaelyn.” He suddenly called and I altered my next step.
My heart beat faster as I considered if he wanted to call me out on lying.
“Yes, uncle.” A forced smile spread on my lips as I turned to him.
“If you ever need anything, don't be afraid to ask.”
He had a genuine smile on his face and I couldn't help but smile along with him. The despair from the day evaporated.
“I will. Thank you, Uncle.”
Later in my room, I brought out my books to do my assignments and once I was done, I decided to self-reve. It took my mind off what I faced in school, plus it helped me catch up.
Grrr
My stomach grumbled and that made me check the time only to realize that it was late at night. I had skipped dinner because I was too focused on my work.
I debated going to sleep like that but eventually, hunger got the best of me and I went downstairs.
Everywhere was dark, so I traced my way into the kitchen and then switched on the light switch.
“Arghhh!” I screamed, stumbling back in fright as I noticed that someone else was in the kitchen.
“Shut the hell up!” He whispered harshly with a finger placed in his lips to shush me.
I placed my hand on my chest to calm myself when I realized that it was only Enzo.
What the hell was he doing sitting in the dark?
“Sorry,” I mumbled before contemplating whether I should turn back or stay on.
He didn't seem to care about my plight as he continued sipping the water I just noticed was in his hands.
My stomach suddenly grumbled loudly breaking the weird tension.
I blushed in embarrassment as he looked up at me with a lazy expression.
I could have sworn I saw amusement swirling in his eyes, but I was gone before I could pinpoint it.
“Do whatever you want to do.”
“Uhm. Okay. Sorry,” I rambled as I hurried to the fridge to rummage for what to eat.
After a while, I stood still while scratching my head in embarrassment.
He gave a long-suffering sigh.
“What is it now?”
I turned to him, my face beet red.
“I don't know how to cook.”
He stared at me blankly for a while.
I didn't as my mom was the one who took care of that. She made sure I focused on my studies and didn't soil my hands by entering the kitchen. Even when she was in the hospital, I survived on instant food.
He suddenly stood up. Just when I thought he would get up and walk out, he walked towards me.
I cowered back.
“Move!”
“Huh?”
“You are blocking the fridge, Jaelyn. Move.”
“Oh! Sorry,” I moved aside immediately.
I watched as he dug out ingredients from the freezer and proceeded to cook some noodles.
I had to admit that he looked so good while he cooked.
“Eat!”
His voice snapped me out of my thoughts and I blushed as I hoped I wasn't drooling earlier.
“What did you say, sorry?”
“I said eat. Or should I feed these to the dogs?”
“Oh. Really? Thank you so much.”
Who would have thought that Enzo would cook for me?
“I did it so you wouldn't mess up the kitchen while I'm still here. Nothing else. I hate messes”
“Oh okay. Still thank you.” With that, I dug in, and I had to admit that he had skills.
“This is so delicious,” I mumbled in between bites.
I felt his gaze on me at some point, but I was too hungry to care as I shoveled bite after bite into my mouth.
When I was done, I thanked him again before I went off to wash the dishes.
By the time I was done, he was gone, and I didn't know whether everything that happened was a dream or not.
Why was Enzo suddenly nice to me?
