Chapter 3

Jaelyn's standpoint

“Jaelyn, this is MacKenzie. She will be your guide today.” Mrs. Angela said, pointing at a pretty girl she had called into her office earlier.

Alpha Masen had left earlier after putting me in Mrs. Angela's care.

“Nice to meet you.” I greeted, trying to be friendly as possible.

“Same” she replied neither enthusiastically nor coldly.

I didn't know what to feel about that.

“Off you go then. Classes are starting soon. I've already given MacKenzie your schedule, and she will show you your class. You'll start with the most basic classes and once you are up-to-date on everything, we can upgrade you.” Mrs. Angela said, and I nodded despite not understanding half of what she meant.

MacKenzie walked out without a response, and I just followed.

“Hi! So I'm hoping you can show me the rooms.” I started trying to start a conversation.

She sighed and abruptly halted, almost making me stumble into her.

“Enough newbie. I'm not hoping to make friends, neither am I going to help you. This school is a dog-eat-dog world, and I frankly don't want to be seen associating with a new target. Besides, I have better things to do than babysit the new kid. I quite like your eyes, though, so I hope you survive.” With that, she shoved my schedule into my hands and walked off briskly.

I stood dumbstruck as I stared at her departing back.

What was I supposed to do now?

Eventually, I started asking around for my class and when I got looks of disdain and disgust, I settled for finding my class myself.

It was English.

I eventually got to class, but the bell had already rung, so when I walked in, everyone's eyes were on me.

“Why are you late?” The teacher bellowed as he glared at me.

“I'm sorry, sir. I got lost trying to find the class. I'm new here, sir.”

“And so? That's no excuse for being late to my class. Try it again and you'll wish you never did”.

He was so intimidating that I almost backed out of the class and ran away but remembering my mother's smile, I nodded before heading in.

I searched the class for an empty seat, and I grew happy when I spotted one besides a familiar face.

I walked towards the seat and sat down. Immediately I did, though, gasps echoed around me as the class was plunged into silence. Even the teacher stared at me in horror.

What is going on? Whatever.

I started pulling out the books from my bag under everyone's gaze. When I was done, I looked up only to see that my neighbor had raised his head and was staring at me curiously.

It was Enzo.

“Hi.”

“Don't talk to me!” He snapped with a deep growl, turned away and rested his head back on the table.

I could swear that the class heaved a collective sigh of relief.

“Okay then. For today's class, we'll be doing derivative functions…"

I paid rapt attention during class, as I had a lot to catch up on. I felt that people in class kept peeking at me more often. Not only that, but I wasn't sure if it was my imagination, though.

The day went by in a blur with me running to find my classes, arriving late, being scolded by the teachers, and being stared at by the students.

I was sure that they were staring at me now.

“I'm sure she's a normal human, so why is she here?” I heard one of the girls whispering as I walked by the hallway during lunch.

“I don't know what Mrs. Angela is trying to do accepting a Norm here”

I was confused as to what they were on about, but I was sure it had something to do with me being in this school.

After I shoved my books into my locker, I began to head in the same direction as other students, as I assumed they were heading in the direction of the cafeteria.

Thankfully, I was right.

“Hey! Move it, norm! Stop blocking my way” Someone said as they harshly shoved me. Thankfully, I was able to catch myself at the last second.

“Sorry.”

The person scoffed and passed me. I noticed that it was a beautiful girl. She had an entourage following her.

They all headed towards Enzo's table. My eye lingered on him for a second before I turned and went to get my food.

I later sat at a table close to the dumpster because no one was willing to let me sit with them.

“Loser.” A girl said as she passed me while her friends broke into laughter. I tried not to let everything get to me. I dug into my food.

Soon I felt someone's gaze on me, so I looked up only to be entranced by Enzo's green eyes.

He was staring at me so intensely that I felt goosebumps crawl on my skin.

Like before, he was the one who broke the eye contact. It was after that I noticed the pretty lady who had all been staring at him, glared at me.

Suddenly, she smirked at me before turning to Enzo to whisper something.

His brow raised.

The lady stood up and carried her tray to walk towards me. Everyone in the cafeteria immediately kept quiet as they followed her with their eyes.

“Hi there. I'm Julia. Do you mind if I sit here with you?” She asked smilingly in a sweet and comforting way.

I smiled back. “Yes of course,” I said, adjusting to make space for her.

“It might be a bit smelly as it's near the dumpster but…" I started but was cut off when I felt something cold begin to pour on me.

“Oops. My hand slipped.”

I looked up only to realize that she was pouring her soup on my head while smirking.

“But why?”

She leaned forward until she was beside my ear.

“Stop staring at my man, runt.”

She turned and strutted off.

Tears blurred my vision as I looked around and found everyone looking at me like I was a clown. Even Enzo didn't look up from his food.

I stood and began to run off to the bathroom only to slip, eliciting laughter from everyone.

Someone's boots suddenly appeared before me and I looked up only to see it was MacKenzie's.

She smiled.

“Welcome to Dawson High, newbie.”
