Chapter 6

A few days later, Daniel's condition worsened, and without amputation, his life was at risk.

I hovered by the bedside, disdainfully watching him play the victim.

Despite his weakness, he didn't forget to act pitifully. "Bertha, I'm sorry. I won't be able to keep my promise and be your dance partner anymore..."

Bertha was heartbroken, anxiously pacing back and forth in the hospital room.

Finally, she rushed into the doctor's office, grabbed a fruit knife, and pointed it at the director.

"Get Alexander out here to save him. What kind of doctor lets someone die in front of him?"

The director gave a helpless smile, thinking this woman had gone mad.

All evidence clearly showed that I was dead.

But she refused to believe it.

With bloodshot eyes, she screamed, "If Daniel's leg can't be healed, I'll make Alexander pay with his life!"

At that moment, a strong elderly voice resonated. "Miss Brown, are you planning to dig Alexander up from his grave to perform surgery on your lover?"

Kristin supported my grandfather as they entered.

Seeing my grandfather made my eyes well up with tears.

He was one of the few people in this world who truly cared for me.

Bertha was stunned when she saw my grandfather holding my memorial photo.

My grandfather struck his cane heavily on the floor, his eyes filled with regret. "I opposed Alexander marrying you from the start. If he hadn't married you, he wouldn't have died on the day you eloped with your lover."

"Fortunately, he came to his senses. He signed the divorce papers just before he closed his eyes! He wanted nothing more to do with you until his last breath."

Bertha knew my grandfather's character. It was impossible for him to lie about my death.

Her hand holding the knife began to tremble as she muttered incessantly,

"Impossible! How could he die? You're all liars!"

On the day before our wedding anniversary, Bertha uncharacteristically nestled gently in my arms and said it would be wonderful if I could retire early and spend every day with her.

I thought it over all night and submitted my resignation the next morning.

When I returned home, I found a note.

"Bertha and I are off to Paris. I'll take good care of her. Don't worry."

Daniel's signature at the bottom stung my eyes.

I let out a cold laugh. My own wife cheated on me.

Sadness and disappointment overwhelmed me. I lost control and sped to the airport, hoping to win Bertha back one last time.

Unexpectedly, I got into a car accident on the way and was in critical condition for an entire day and night.

In my final moments, I had only one thought. I didn’t want anything more to do with Bertha.

With all my remaining strength, I signed what would be my last signature in this world.

But my resentment was too deep. My soul remained trapped in the hospital.

Bertha seemed to finally accept that I was dead.

She looked like her soul had been taken away, her eyes vacant and her mouth moving without making a sound.

My grandfather sneered at her. "Why pretend now? Someone as shameless as you doesn't deserve Alexander."
