Chapter 3

It was already the beginning of summer, but I felt a chill all over my body.

I left the auction hall and returned to the Connaughton Family's old mansion.

Eylon was kneeling in the main hall, and the servants were all shocked, fearing that Old Mr. Hull might vent his anger on them.

"Grandpa, you wouldn't believe it, but today I met Old Mr. Hull. He said he hasn't caught up with you in a long time."

When Grandpa saw me return, he waved and smiled, beckoning me to his side.

I glanced at Eylon, hinting that if he followed Grandpa's wishes, this storm would pass.

"Grandpa, it's almost noon. Shall we head to the dining room for lunch?"

"Alright, alright. Taryn must be hungry after a busy morning."

"Let's have Eylon join us for lunch too."

"Hmph!"

Grandpa didn't say more, and I quietly signaled Eylon to get up.

Eylon stood up, bowed to Grandpa, and pressed his thin lips together.

"Grandpa, Evie is already more than five months pregnant. Please give us your blessing."

I instinctively took a step back. So he really intended to marry Evie.

What about me?

Grandpa's recently calmed anger flared up again.

"You ungrateful wretch! The Connaughton Family has only one eldest grandson's wife, and that's Taryn."

"Get rid of those other entanglements outside, or don't blame me for being ruthless."

This time, Eylon's gaze was firm as he looked directly at Grandpa.

"Grandpa, Evie and I truly love each other. Please give us your blessing. As for Taryn..."

He paused slightly and glanced at me standing to the side before speaking again.

"I've always treated her like a sister."

"Please give us your blessing."

I looked at the unfamiliar Eylon in front of me, feeling a dull ache in my heart.

Who sneaks into their sister's room in the middle of the night to hold her while they sleep?

Who holds their sister on their lap and warns others not to make advances on her?

Grandpa was furious and declared that if Eylon insisted on marrying Evie, he would be expelled from the Connaughton Family.

After that day, Eylon left home and cut off contact with me.

A week later, I attended a porcelain auction organized by the Connaughton Family enterprise.

At the auction, I saw Evie holding onto Eylon as they took their seats.

Just as a transaction was about to be completed for a large Qing Qianlong vase, there was a commotion in the hall.

Eylon had a subtle smile on his lips.

"Someone reported that this auction involves counterfeit items. Please cooperate with our investigation."

"Excuse me, auctioneer. Please cooperate with our work."

A uniformed officer approached and took control of the chaotic auction hall.

I was also taken off the auction stage by him.

This auction was organized by the Connaughton Family to showcase their latest porcelain exhibits after the auction ended.

It was meant to promote the Connaughton Family's upcoming porcelain ventures.

If this was all part of Eylon's scheme, what did he hope to gain?

What benefit could this bring him?

Meanwhile, Eylon was also taken away by the police, leaving Evie looking panicked and helpless.

Not long after, I was bailed out by Grandpa's men, but Eylon remained in custody for further investigation.

The more I thought about it, the less I understood who was really pulling the strings behind this farce.
