Eylon Connaughton held my hand as we attended a grand auction. An hour later, the capital was buzzing with news. Mr. Con...
Chapter 1
Countless flashlights surrounded the pregnant woman being interviewed.
Eylon called security to escort me to the car through the back door, away from the commotion.
Eylon and I had been in love for seven years, our affection as strong as ever, and we were about to get married.
A month ago, the Connaughton family put pressure on Eylon, asserting that if he was over thirty-five without children, the family assets would be publicly donated.
Just before this, I encountered that pregnant woman in the hospital's maternity department.
While I was being administered an ovulation injection, she was next to me receiving a pregnancy protection shot.
I heard her loudly bragging. "I'm carrying a Connaughton family heir."
"As long as I give birth to him, I’m going to be rich. You doctors and nurses should be honored to deliver my baby."
I sneered inwardly. There could be no one else but Eylon from the Connaughton family.
As soon as the car was about to start, a group of reporters swarmed around. One reporter recklessly pressed against the window.
"Miss Griswold, how will the Connaughton family handle today's scandal?"
"Miss Griswold, will you and Mr. Connaughton postpone your wedding because of this?"
I rolled down the window and looked at the reporter outside.
"The Connaughton family will never acknowledge an illegitimate child!"
I coldly released this statement, which undoubtedly dealt a significant blow to Eylon.
After all, he had only nine months left until he turned thirty-six, and my belly was still flat.
The pregnant woman causing trouble at the auction was his childhood sweetheart.
At sixteen, I was adopted by the Connaughton family and publicly declared their goddaughter.
In reality, I was treated as the future daughter-in-law of the Connaughton family.
That year, when Grandpa learned that Eylon had a close female friend at school, he immediately ordered him to transfer schools and arranged for us to spend all our time together.
Eylon initially resisted but developed a desire to conquer me in response to my indifference.
The lunches meticulously prepared by the chef were often dumped into the trash by me.
The consequence was that I always returned home with an empty stomach waiting for dinner.
During those times, he would sneak me some cookies.
Day after day, I finally accepted him.
Eylon returned home late in the evening.
He held my hand and knelt before me with a guilty expression, explaining himself.
"Taryn Griswold, I really don't know where that crazy woman came from tonight. How could I have anything to do with another woman?"
"Taryn, you have to believe me. Don't let Grandpa get upset, which is not good for his health."
I nodded and pulled him up.
"Don't worry about Grandpa. As for that woman, she might just be a crazy person seeking attention."
Seeing that I believed him completely, Eylon relaxed and hugged me tightly, kissing my hair.
Just then, his phone rang. After hesitating for a moment, he got up to answer it.
The other end of the line was extremely noisy. I vaguely heard a woman's voice crying and shouting.
"Mr. Connaughton, if you don't come see me tonight, you'll see your child's corpse tomorrow."
Eylon's face turned pale instantly. Ignoring me sitting on the bed, he stormed out of the room.
The glass dropper in my hand shattered and cut my palm without me even noticing.
