Dazed and groggy.
The stinging scent of disinfectant entered her nostrils, and Kaleigh's eyelashes trembled as she slowly opened her eyes.
"Awake? Take your prenatal medication," came a familiar voice from her side.
Anderson Gardner was Kaleigh's childhood friend, and he was also a doctor at this hospital.
Last night, Kaleigh had collapsed in a pool of blood, and Sophia had left without a word. She couldn't reach Conrad and had no choice but to call Anderson before losing consciousness.
"The condition of the fetus is very unstable, and with a fractured left leg, you'll need to stay in the hospital for over a week for observation," Anderson spoke softly.
After taking the medicine, Kaleigh hesitated to speak, "I can't stay away from home for so long, and I'm worried about..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Anderson interrupted her, "Conrad doesn't care about you or the child's well-being at all. Why do you still care about everything related to his family? As for Sophia, don't you plan to let the police handle her?"
Kaleigh gently placed her hand on her stomach and said, "Rest assured, I know what I'm doing."
She knew that Anderson had never been optimistic about her relationship with Conrad from the beginning. He didn't even attend their wedding. And now, with her decision to forgo her heart treatment against the doctor's advice to keep the child, combined with this recent incident, Anderson was even more disappointed.
"Kaleigh, let go... if you keep going like this, you might lose your life..." Anderson's eyes were filled with sorrow.
"I know..." Kaleigh's body trembled slightly, and the knuckles under the blanket turned slightly white.
After a week of hospitalization, Conrad hadn't made a single call, let alone come to the hospital to visit her.
Kaleigh, leaning on crutches, returned to the Roberson mansion, hoping to have one final conversation with Conrad.
As she pushed open the door, the glaring red high heels caught her eye, leaving her momentarily dazed.
Kaleigh tugged at the corner of her mouth, instantly recognizing the owner of those shoes - it was Sophia, the one who had pushed her down the steps.
From the study, a woman's voice dripping with affectation could be heard, drawing Kaleigh unconsciously closer.
"Conrad..." Sophia had her upper body pressed against Conrad, using her most cloying tone.
Conrad stiffened for a moment but didn't push her away. "Behave yourself. I promised your sister I would take good care of you."
Kaleigh stood there, her heart feeling like it had been stabbed with a sharp knife, the pain washing over her in waves.
Four years of unrequited love, three years of marriage, and this was the man she had invested seven years of her life into.
It was time to let go...
In the study, Conrad noticed Kaleigh standing half-hidden outside the door. The warm look on his face instantly vanished.
"You've got some nerve coming back here."
His words oozed not with concern but with disgust.
Kaleigh turned her gaze to Sophia, who was looking smugly at her, a challenging look in her eyes.
Kaleigh despaired and withdrew her gaze, her heart filled with desolation.
At this moment, she suddenly realized that there was no need for any more communication.
Kaleigh was about to speak when a commotion outside caught her attention.
She looked out and saw three or four men and women rushing towards the house.
"Kaleigh, so you're hiding here! I'm going to drag you to accompany Marthay!" The leader was a robust middle-aged woman.
In the study, Sophia exclaimed and hurriedly ran out, pretending to stop her. "Aunt, be careful. Murder is a crime, and you can't make such accusations... Besides, Kaleigh is pregnant, don't hurt her..."
Mrs. Riley's eyes turned harsh, and she grabbed Kaleigh's hand with more force.
"Pregnant? You stole Martha's man and didn't give her a chance to live. Everything that belonged to the Roberson family, which should have been hers, was taken away by you. What right do you have to have a child? Let your child go underground to serve Martha!"
Mrs. Riley, having finished her words, raised her hand and struck Kaleigh's stomach forcefully.
"No! Don't!" Kaleigh, held by two people, curled up in agony.
Seeing that they were about to drag her out, Kaleigh shouted in terror, "Conrad, save me..." Save our child, who had just escaped death.
Conrad's heart trembled unexpectedly. He was about to speak up to stop them, but his gaze fell upon the picture frame on the table, showing a gentle woman with a smile.
His Martha...
The emotions in Conrad's deep, intense eyes fluctuated incessantly. Finally, he spoke in a cold voice, "Take her outside, don't make a mess here."
His words were a death sentence for Kaleigh.
Kaleigh's face turned deathly pale, and she completely fell apart. She used every bit of strength to hoarsely shout into the room, "Conrad, I will never forgive you in this lifetime..."
