Chapter 1: Proof of Death
"Bang!"
The door to the room was forcefully pushed open, and Conrad's face was filled with loathing as he yanked the woman in the bed.
Kaleigh, half-asleep, looked at her husband, who hadn't come home for two weeks, with a bewildered expression on her face.
"Conrad..." She began to speak, but Conrad Roberson harshly interrupted her.
"Kaleigh Stein, how can your heart be so cold?" He fiercely hurled the document in his hand towards Kaleigh's face.
Kaleigh winced in pain and drew in a sharp breath as she saw the words "Proof of Death" on the corner of the document.
"What is this?" She asked in astonishment.
"Are you still pretending even now?" The sinister look in Conrad's eyes sent shivers down Kaleigh's spine.
A fine layer of sweat formed on Kaleigh's back, and she appeared somewhat lost. "What has happened?" She managed to say.
Before she could say more, Conrad had already dragged her downstairs.
Kaleigh stumbled her way into the living room, where she collided with the housekeeper Amy, who was preparing medicine for her.
Amy saw the two struggling individuals and immediately exclaimed, "Sir, ma'ma is pregnant, and it's so late. What are you..."
But before she could finish her sentence, the butler shot her a warning glare.
Amy froze, realizing that Conrad was the only male master in the house and also the CEO of the Roberson Group, whom nobody dared to offend.
Conrad roughly pushed Kaleigh into the car, showing no mercy, which caused a dull pain in her lower abdomen.
"Conrad, where are you taking me?" She leaned over her belly, trembling hands, and asked cautiously.
"Where are we going? Kaleigh, I never knew you were such a good actress!" Conrad's face twisted with disgust, his voice icy.
He locked the car door and sped off in the direction of the hospital.
In front of the mortuary, Kaleigh stood there, tense and watched Conrad's frosty, handsome face, her chest constricting.
"Conrad, why did you bring me here?" she asked, her voice quivering.
"What? Kaleigh, even here, you're going to keep pretending? You don't know that Martha died right here?" Conrad's words left Kaleigh pale in shock.
"She... she's dead?" Panic welled up from the depths of Kaleigh's heart.
The woman who had been cherished and adored by her husband, dead?
"Yeah! If it weren't for your unwillingness to donate bone marrow to her, how could she have died?" Conrad gritted his teeth and dragged her inside.
The sinister iron gate creaked, and in the cold, empty hall lay a body covered in white cloth.
Kaleigh shivered, taking step after step back. "No... Conrad, I don't want to go there..."
Her stomach churned, and the slight bulge in her lower abdomen made her extremely uncomfortable.
"Scared?" Conrad grabbed Kaleigh's arm, his voice thin and cold.
Helplessly, Kaleigh nodded, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Hmm, Kaleigh, when Martha was taking her last breath on her sickbed, did you ever think she might be scared too?" Conrad's words cut into Kaleigh like a blade.
"Do you think your bone marrow is worth a lot? Do you cherish that little bit of bone marrow in your body so much? Martha is dead, are you satisfied now?" Conrad's voice was hoarse as he shouted.
"No... I..." Kaleigh's heart twisted, and the pain made her pale lips turn slightly purple.
They had been married for three years, and she had always known that Martha was Conrad's beloved.
Back then, when Martha had begged for her bone marrow, it wasn't that she didn't want to, but her own heart condition prevented her from donating.
If she had given her bone marrow, she would have died from heart failure.
Conrad, it's not that I didn't want to donate...
"Kneel and apologize to Martha!" Conrad's heartless voice echoed chillingly in the cold mortuary.
Kaleigh froze, a look of disbelief crossing her pale cheeks as she stared at the stern-faced man before her.
"Conrad, I'm pregnant..." Kaleigh's tears welled up, and she gently cradled her stomach, taking a step back.
"I'd rather not have this child." Conrad's cruel words were filled with ruthless indifference.
