Chapter 4
Soon to be Mrs. Brilliantes
They agreed on something and I guessed that. That's why we're at the same table now. That's why Mom's reaction was like that. Arveliah was the one he wanted to marry into this family and he hoped that she would be chosen when these people couldn't recognize her. He also has no intention of introducing me to everyone.
He even disobeyed my outfit because it was too attention-grabbing. Arveliah also needs the full attention of their visitors.
"Yeah, we have already talked about this with her Mom," my father said and he glanced at my Mom.
"We won't have any problems either," said Mommy.
I just didn't move because I had nothing to do with what they were talking about. The future of you and my brother is what they are all planning. My brother's happiness is also important to me, but only Mom and Dad will decide that. It's just that they won't force Arveliah.
Another thing, my brother is an obedient son. They will not have a problem and it will not fail them.
"Since, we have settled everything. Maybe...I can now choose my granddaughter's marriage partner, Daimor?” My drink of water hung in the air when I heard Don Brill's question.
Why does he have to choose if they already know who they are going to marry?
“Excuse me, Don Brill?” Mommy asked in surprise. I think he was shocked that he would even choose it, when he and Daddy already had a crush on each other.
Instead of answering him, Don Brill turned to me, which made my heart beat even more restlessly. I hope not...
Don't let me, please. I don't want to enter into that arranged marriage. That's not a good idea and why are they still promoting it?
"How old are you, hija?" he asked me. I grabbed my skirt because my hand was shaking. In this matter I am really nervous.
I also don't want to talk about my marriage when I'm not ready and I don't have my mind set on settling down. That if it's possible, I won't have a family anymore. Maybe because I won't be a good mother to my future child. That maybe...I can't handle my responsibility as their mother.
"I'm 28 years old, Don Brill," I answered, I just tried not to stutter in front of them.
“28, my grandson Mergus is just your age. I wonder who is older on the moon? Your birthday, hija?” Why does Don Brill have so many questions?
"January 17," I answered again.
"January, hmm... His birthday is on December 21. Well, the gap between the two of you is about to be a year. But it's still possible," he said and I turned to the grandson he was talking about.
He was just leaning forward and playing with the straw of his wine in his cocktail glass. He looks like he doesn't care, tss... Could it be his favor that his grandfather is already planning his wedding? He didn't do anything, and it seems he is not against his decision. He's also obedient, isn't he?
"Don Brill? There is...someone has chosen--" even before finishing what you were going to ask Dad about Don Brill, I stood up to say goodbye. I need to leave before he changes his mind and he chooses someone who doesn't want what they're talking about. I'm out there.
"Can I go out? I just want to go to comfort room," I said goodbye just to avoid it.
"May Ann, we are all still talking about something here. Sit down again.” Mommy's voice said softly. "Don't be rude," he added and said it in a low voice.
"Mom, I don't have to stay here because of what you're talking about. I believe, I have nothing more to do, right?" I asked and he simply pinched my left thigh. Even so, I didn't even react to the pain when he pinched me because it was so strong. I simply caressed it.
"No, daughter. You need to stay here because you and my grandson Mergus are the ones I chose to marry each other, and I guess you are still single, am I right?" Why is he straight forward?
"Yes... W-What? Don Brill...” I blinked repeatedly. Why me?
Out of nowhere I looked at Arveliah. He doesn't seem to have anything even though he wasn't your choice. But why me? Why not just Arveliah? Why did he choose me?
“B-But, Don Brill?”
"That's how it should be, right Daimor? Our firstborn children are the ones who choose to marry. Do you agree, Arveliah hija?”
"Of course, Don Brill and...I really know my sister. She's not like the other girls out there. You can count on him too." I felt the bridge of my nose. Why does she need to say that?
"May Ann... Just look at my grandson, is he in your standard, hija?" he asked me.
“Standard?” I asked and it made me think. Do I have standards when it comes to men? Eh, since I don't have... Wait, what was that? Is it required to have a standard when it comes to men?
"This is the Daddy of Mergus and his younger brother, Michael." I nodded when he introduced his daddy and brother. They all really have looks.
"Nice meeting you, hija," said Mergus's Daddy.
"Same here, Sir."
"No, just call me, Uncle M," he said shaking his head.
"It's Michael, nice to meet you," Michael introduced himself to me and extended his hand. I reached for it and accepted it but I was surprised when he brought it to his lips for a kiss.
"Likewise," I said simply.
I faced him again, the old man. "Don Brill, did you ask your grandson if he agrees to marry the girl he doesn't like and he just met?" I asked him politely. He nodded his head.
"My grandchildren are obedient children, hija. I will not have a problem with them," he said. I disagree.
"But...you can't force them to do things they don't want. Let them...choose what they want to do and besides, they are matured enough and they have their own decisions in life. They are adults and I think...they already like women of their type," I explained. Just to escape from this upcoming wedding.
"May Ann, that's below the belt," Dad disobeyed me but Don Brill just laughed.
“Let him go, Daimor. You should be happy because you raised your son to be concerned about the welfare of others and I think... He will raise his son with Mergus well," he said and I sat down again in shock. Suddenly, Mergus was shocked and his brother rubbed his back.
Will be our child? I don't think so...
I just stayed in my seat and didn't interrupt their conversation. Because it looks like I can't do anything else. Don Brill made the choice and my parents just agreed. Arveliah who looked like she was still happy, while I...
I'm constantly sighing. I feel like I'm regretting why I even went to the music room earlier and met Don Brill there.
What did I get into?
"You know what... Mergus, why would you go to the dance floor and invite your soon-to-be-wife? Dance with her, grandpa.” I was taken aback by Don Brill's suggestion. His grandson didn't even need to dance with me.
Mergus stood up-- wait a minute, why am I calling him by his first name? We're not close, ah.
"May I have this dance?" he asked me and I stared at his hand.
"May, what are you doing? Are you going to wait for Engineer Mergus?” my Mom asked me. I sighed.
My hand was still shaking when I reached for it and he held it tightly. We both stared at each other because there was the electric voltage running through his palm again. It was big and he could hold both of my palms.
He still supported me to stand and I even heard my brother cheering us up.
It's not just our families who are watching us now because even the guests have their attention on us. There is also a couple dancing, just don't leave the dance floor because they might...
He brought both of my hands to his shoulders and my eyes widened when I felt his hand sliding down my back. I kept regretting why I only wore a crop top. So I could feel his warm palm on my bare back that gradually went down to my waist and he pulled me closer to him.
I turned my head in the other direction because of his thoughtful look at me and I was drowning in his blank eyes.
The new song they are playing starts again.
Take it
If she gives you her heart
Don't you break it
Let your arms be a place
She feels safe inside
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
"You know what... I just saw a woman who wore this kind of clothing. What do you call this, Miss? Crop top? Well, I've seen many women who also wear backless dresses but you...you hit different... Paneled skirt?”
"How did you know the style of my skirt?" I asked him curiously.
"I heard your Mom. Hmm, not her voice, actually. My lips just followed what he said," he said.
"And... so what?" I fired back, he tightened his hold.
"I don't want to get married..." he said.
"You can decline, go tell your grandfather that you don't want to get married," I said.
"But it's not that easy," he said problematically.
She always has trouble
Falling asleep
And she likes to cuddle
While under the sheets
She loves Pop songs
And dancing, and bad trash TV
There's still a few other things
"It's easy...just say no to him, and the end," I said and he chuckled. My heart beat faster because of his cold voice.
"I don't know how to date a woman. So, the song... It's okay if I cuddle you while under the sheets and do nothing... You love Pop songs and dancing? A bad trash TV?” he asked and I knew he was just insulting me, just based on his voice.
"I'm not kind of that girl, excuse me..."
"Honestly speaking... That's why I don't like Grandpa's marriage proposal to your family because... I don't like you, I don't see myself marrying someone like you either...
She loves love notes and babies
And likes giving gifts
Has a hard time accepting
A good compliment
She loves her entire family
And all of her friends
So if you're the one she lets in
"Maybe...and I don't love notes, babies either... You saw earlier that I like to make my own sister cry. I'm not a perfect person...not a perfect sister, and I hate compliments. You can back out, Engineer Mergus. You're not going to like any of my behavior," I said and was about to distance myself away from him but...he didn't let me.
"It's not that easy," he repeated what he said earlier. My heart skipped a beat when he touched my cheek. "Grandpa, he has a good choice and he never disappointed us. However, we hated him because he always did this nonsense we called it arranged marriage. But with the number of women inside this ball? Someone already caught my attention and not you...” he said and I felt him turn in another direction. My sister is now dancing with her brother.
"My...sister?"
"Yes... I already know her for years, and we're friends. I wanna dance with the girl I like the most, tonight.”
"Go ahead..." I said and pushed him gently but he still didn't move away. "What are you doing? Let me go...”
Take it
If she gives you her heart
Don't you break it
Let your arms be a place
She feels safe inside
She's the best thing that you'll ever have
She'll love you
If you love her
He didn't move, instead he pulled me closer to a man and I even saw the rapid reddening of both his cheeks.
"Here, you can dance with my partner. You like her, do you?”
“W-What?”
"E-Engineer Mergus..." I called his name because he just gave me away to another man.
I looked at Mom and Dad, they are now busy eating, that's why this engineer has the courage to do something to me that I hate.
I withdrew my hand from the man and faced Engineer Mergus. I guess he guessed what I was going to do, so before I could even slap him, he grabbed my hand.
"Oh...you're so harsh..."
"If you don't like me, you don't have to insult me anymore," I said angrily and violently withdrew my hand but he still held it tightly.
“Chill. There are people looking at us. Maybe they are saying that I am fighting you," he said. I stepped closer to him and stepped on his foot. I used those stick heels of mine that made him moan.
"What the fvck?!" he cursed and his eyes immediately glazed over when he looked at me. I rolled my eyes and turned my back on him.
I don't care if Don Brill finds me or if Dad gets angry, I just want to get out of here. That guy's face just irritates me. Feeling annoyed and angry, I didn't even realize that the swimming pool was the path I was taking.
I was stunned when I saw that. My body immediately trembled and my knees went weak. My chest is beating so hard. I took a step back and especially when my chest started to tighten and I was having trouble breathing.
The corners of my eyes warmed and my heart just throbbed. I closed my eyes tightly and hit my chest because I was really struggling to breathe.
I couldn't move from where I was standing because I felt like I was nailed too.
"Hey, my soon to be Mrs. Brilliantes...” By that, my peso's fear disappeared immediately.
