THE AWAKENING FROM WITHIN

Luna was standing on the forest's edge when the mist of the early morning swirled around her feet, appearing to be a living thing. Because of her newly developed senses, everything around her looked to be alive and pulsating. She felt a connection to the forest that was beyond her comprehension; it was no longer only an environment for her ideas, but a live, breathing entity.

Elias had informed her that connecting with her wolf and striking a balance between the human and the beast was the next level of her training. It had nothing to do with subduing her wolf or putting it at bay. Instead, it was about understanding it and coexisting with it.

“Are you ready?” The calm, authoritative tone of Elias's voice made Luna's heart race.

She nodded, but something inside her became doubtful. She was a bit scared about what might be ahead because this was unfamiliar ground. But, she was determined to understand and come to terms with this part of herself, though, even in the face of this worry. She was too far gone to go back now.

Elias kept his gaze set on Luna and said, "Remember, this isn't a battle." You're learning to live with your wolf, not battle it. Pay attention to what it's telling you, and believe your instincts.”

Luna closed her eyes and took a long breath, trying to stop the raging emotions within her. She became aware of her breathing and allowed it to lead her into a peaceful mood. She felt it as she went along—her wolf, waiting just below the surface as she was doing it. It was restless, powerful, and eager to break free, but it wasn’t hostile. It was curious, mirroring her hesitations and hopes.

Luna's eyes sprang awake as a low growl rumbled in her chest. All the details in the world had become more bright and sharper around her. She detected the smells of the moist ground, moss and pine, and the far-off odor of animals concealed in the undergrowth. She had sharper vision and more vibrant hues, as though she was witnessing the world in high definition for the first time.

Elias observed her intently, his face unreadable. “You’re doing well,” he said quietly. “Keep going.”

Luna nodded, focusing inward once more. She was feeling more and more connected to her wolf, and that feeling of power both excited and scared her. She moved forward, her actions now instinctual and driven by something deep down in her.

She grew more aware of her surroundings the deeper she went into the forest. She felt as though the forest itself was guiding her as if the faraway sounds and the rustle of leaves were a part of her. She was starting to feel more confident and in charge of her situation, replacing the panic that had grabbed her before.

But then, things changed. A faint but definite aroma of metal and soil, with an underlying bitterness that made her skin tingle, was what Luna detected on the wind. Her body tensed as she froze, trying to identify the source.

Elias moved to her side as he saw her shift, his eyes becoming more intense. "What is that?”

Luna whispered, in a tense voice, "Someone's nearby." ”I can smell them.”

Elias’s eyes darkened. “Where?”

Luna closed her eyes, letting the scent guide her. It was coming from the west, near a cluster of thick pines. She pointed, and Elias nodded, his expression grim.

"Stay close," he ordered in a firm voice.

Together, they went quickly and silently, barely leaving any trace of their footsteps on the forest floor. As they neared the trees, the air grew stronger and took on a new, disturbing scent that turned Luna's stomach. It was clear that whoever was out there was terrified.

Luna saw a man stooped amid the roots, his clothes torn and dirty, as they got closer to the trees. He held something in his hands, a small metallic object throbbing with a faint blue light; his face was pale, his eyes wide with fear.

“What's that?” Luna breathed, her gaze fixed on the device.

Elias mumbled, his eyes never leaving the man, "I don't know." "But it doesn't belong here."

Before they could approach, the man looked up, his expression wild. “They know I’m here. They’ll kill me if they find me “Please,” he rasped, desperate to help me. They’re coming.”

“Who’s coming?” Elias demanded, stepping closer.

The man holds the device tighter with a desperate shake of his head. "They'll kill me. Please, you have to protect me.”

Luna’s sympathy warred with her growing unease. Something about the device, about the man’s panic, felt wrong. Unknown to them, they were being sucked into something dangerous.

Elias extended his hand and took the man by the arm. "Who are you? And what are you doing here?"

But before the man could reply, the nearby trees trembled with a roar. Luna turned around, trying to find the source of the voice, her heart leaping into her throat.

A beast unlike anything Luna had ever seen emerged from the darkness. It was gigantic, with strange, twisted features and frightening crimson eyes. It growls through the air, as it moves with a predatory ease.

Luna felt the wolf inside her awaken. Its instincts were yelling at her to fight or run. But the sheer terror of the beast in front of her paralyzed her, leaving her speechless and frozen in place.

“Luna, move!” Elias shouted, shoving her out of the way as the creature lunged.

Everything around them became a clamor of movement and sound. Luna followed her instincts and ducked to the side, missing the creature's sharp claws. Elias was fighting to keep the thing at bay, his movements precise and quick.

But it was strong—too strong. Luna witnessed Elias struggle, helpless against the beast's tremendous power. She knew she had to help, but she hesitated because fear and confusion clouded her judgment.

Then, as though sensing her fight, the wolf took over and moved to the front of her mind. Luna could feel her body changing, more quickly than she could understand. Her muscles coiled with strength she had never known before, her vision sharpened, and she charged the beast with a savagery that caught her off guard.

The battle was a whirl of teeth and claws, of blood and fury. The human brain in Luna withdrew and gave way to the wolf's instincts. She fought with everything she had, driven by the need to protect Elias and herself.

Finally, Luna planted her teeth deep into the creature's throat and launched a powerful lunge that tore through flesh and muscle. The beast let out one more, roar before collapsing to the ground and squirming for a little while before going still.

Luna was unable to breathe, as she stepped backward, her heart pounding as she tried to regain herself. Her adrenaline had begun to wear off, and she felt uneasy and disoriented. She looked down at her hands, which were covered in blood, and felt awful.

Elias was by her side in a moment, his eyes full of concern. "Luna, are you alright?"

She nodded, not sure if she was or not. She could feel the weight of what had just happened beginning to overwhelm her.

Before she could process any of this, the injured man's stifled cry called for their attention. His eyes wide with fear, he looked at the motionless creature while he continued to hold the device.

He said, his voice shaking with panic, "They'll come for you too." "You won't have a chance when they do,"
