CHAPTER 1
Quiet Life
Moonshade was covered in an ethereal mist, its cobblestone lanes meandering among old trees. Sitting behind the modest bookshop counter, Seraphina Langley ran her fingertips over the weathered spines of ancient books. Her senses were assaulted by the musty smell of old paper, which anchored her in the familiar yet her heart longed for something more than the dusty shelves.
Mrs. Avery, the elderly proprietor of the bookshop, chastised Seraphina for dreaming too much while she cleaned the shelves.
Seraphina just gave a weak grin. "Dreaming is all I have sometimes."
The bell above the door jingled, and when Lucian Thorn came in Seraphina's heart skipped a beat. Tall, with black hair and sharp blue eyes, he was the alpha of the Thorn pack, and his aura of power was obvious.
"Good evening, Mr. Lucian," Seraphina said with a firm voice despite a flutter in her heart.
Lucian nodded sharply, looking around the room before fixating on her. "Seraphina, we really should talk about this."
Her interest aroused, she left the counter from behind it. "What's it?"
Lucian's eyes softened briefly to show a trace of sensitivity then hardened once more. "With the Moon Festival just around, the mate connects. I... I have felt a link between us."
Breath captured by Seraphina. She had experienced the same mysterious attraction toward him, a magnetic force drawing them closer. "I... I feel it also."
Lucian inhaled deeply, his face troubled. "But I cannot permit this to occur. I can't risk losing another; I have lost a mate before. The risk is too large.
Her heart dropped. Lucian, you don't have to guard me. I know how to look for myself.
He gave his head a shake. "You lack understanding. The dangers we deal with beyond everything you could conceive. Gathering forces, Morgan Blackwood will stop at nothing to demolish all I value."
Then let me assist you, Seraphina begged, her green eyes sharp with will. "We can tackle this together."
Lucian's jaw tightened and his internal conflict was clear. " I cannot. I will not endanger you."
The door sprang open, and a tall, hooded man walked in with a tense attitude. The figure snarled, yanking aside the hood to expose Morgan Blackwood's smirking visage. "I have been searching for you."
Lucian stepped defensively in front of Seraphina. “Morgan, What are your desired answers?
The eyes of Morgan shone with hate. "I wish for what ought to have been my own. The pack, the authority, and now your buddy.
As Morgan turned to look at Seraphina, her blood flowed cold, her grin predatory. "This is the one you have been hiding then."
Lucian tensed his muscles and snarled. "Keep away from her."
Morgan giggled darkly. "You're not positioned to demand Lucian. Soon, everything you cherish will be ashes”.
As Morgan progressed the air got heavy with anxiety. Adrenaline surged through Seraphina, who moved forward with a voice quivering but firm. "You won't prevail, Morgan. We cannot allow you."
Morgan's eyes closed as he sprang at Lucian, his claws outstretched. Their growls resounding through the bookshop, the two werewolves met in a whirl of fur and teeth. Heart beating in her chest, Seraphina stared in terror.
Though strong, Lucian battled Morgan's unrelenting assaults. As they battled, blood spilled on the floor; every strike rocked the very basis of the construction. Seraphina realized she owed it something.
She plucked her confidence and threw a hefty bookend at Morgan, directly in the rear. He briefly diverted, growled in agony, and allowed Lucian to attack hard.
Morgan staggered, furious eyes blazing. "This isn't over Lucian," He said, turning away toward the door. "I'll be back, and I'll bring the whole strength of my pack."
Lucian glanced at Seraphina as Morgan vanished into the darkness, his face a combination of relief and worry. "Are you alright?"
She nodded, still with shaky hands. Yes, but what about you?"
Lucian moaned, gripping his side as blood leaked through his shirt. "I will recover. Still, you should keep away from this. From me.
Step closer, Seraphina said, staring straight ahead. "I won't desert you, Lucian remember we are stronger together”
Lucian's eyes softened, but his history still loomed large over him. "I don't want to lose you, Seraphina, Not like I lost her."
She put a hand on his arm and tears filled her eyes. "You will not lose me. We will confront this together, no matter what”.
Lucian paused, the optimism of the present raging within him conflicted with his history. At last, he nodded, a hesitant acceptance in his eyes. "Good, however, we must exercise caution. Morgan is dangerous; he will stop at nothing to wipe us out”.
Seraphina nodded, resolution sharpening her will. "We'll be poised for him."
Their circumstances sank over them as they were ready to leave the bookshop. The battle was far from over, and the threats ahead exceeded their wildest expectations. But taken collectively, they would meet anything that came their way.
The air outside smelled like rain, a storm building on the horizon. The first drips started to rain as Lucian and Seraphina entered the darkness, mixing with Lucian's blood on his shirt. Their path was merely beginning; the struggle had not started.
They were shivering to the bone when a roar suddenly rang throughout the town. The realization that Seraphina's eyes widened that this was a signal, not simply a random werewolf call made Morgan's menace hang closer than ever while the rogues were gathering.
Lucian tightened his hold on her hand. "We should be moving. Right now.
Seraphina couldn't get rid of the impression that their suffering was just starting as they sprinted over streets saturated in rain. Every stride seemed to draw the shadows closer, and the sensation of approaching peril intensified.
On the outskirts of town, they got to Lucian's safe home, the air tense. Inside, maps and weaponry covered the walls, proof of the continuous struggle against Morgan and his allies. Lucian gracefully shut the door behind them.
"We have to get the pack together," he said, sounding urgent. "Prepare for what's ahead."
Seraphina nodded, her heart thumping. "What can I do to help?"
Lucian stared at her, his eyes flickering with both adoration and terror. "Stay close by me. Whatever happens, we confront this together.
Drawing power from his presence, she gripped his hand. “Together."
The storm outside became more severe as they started getting ready, lightning blazing across the heavens. The cries of the rogues became louder, a terrifying reminder of the risk they ran over. But somewhere within the safe place, a fresh will seized.
Ready to battle for their village, their pack, and one another, Seraphina and Lucian though they were resolved to win, the fight ahead would challenge them in ways they could not yet conceive.
The evening passed as the storm tore outside. Seraphina and Lucian stood side by side in the low light of the safe house, prepared to meet whatever gloom lay ahead.
The door suddenly sprung open, and a person silhouetted against the lightning-lit heavens. Elara was staring wide with desperation.
Her voice faltering, she added, "They're here." The army of Morgan is here.
Lucian and Seraphina met a determined glare. They were ready for the moment that had arrived to provide their toughest obstacle yet.
Their hearts beat one, joined in their will as they entered the storm. Moonshade had started a battle, and there was no going back against the gloom.
