Chapter 1

Natalie's eyes brimmed with tears as she gazed at her mother's frail form in the hospital bed. The machines beeping around her seemed to mock her, a harsh reminder of the dire situation.

"Natalie, we need to talk," Dr. Lee said gently, his expression somber.

Natalie's heart sank. She knew what was coming.

"The treatment we've been trying...it's not working. Your mother's cancer has progressed too far. Without a miracle, she has only a few weeks left."

Natalie felt like she'd been punched in the gut, her breath knocked out of her. A few weeks? It couldn't be all the time she had left with her mother. The thought was unbearable. She needed more time, more moments, more memories.

Memories of when they were close, like two peas in a pod, flooded her mind. She remembered laughter, adventures, and late-night conversations. But high school changed everything. She began to push her mother away, rebels against her clinginess, her questions, her love.

The memory of their last argument still lingered - before the cancer - the harsh words she'd spoken still echoing in her mind. "Get a life and stop living through me!" she had shouted, her teenage angst and anger boiling over. Her mother's hurt eyes still haunted her.

Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as she gazed at her mother's frail form. She had taken their time together for granted, assuming there would always be more days, more weeks, more years. Now, facing the reality of her mother's mortality, she realized how precious their relationship was.

"What can we do?" she begged, clinging to hope.

Dr. Lee's expression turned sympathetic. "There is one option...an experimental treatment. But it's expensive, and your mother's insurance won't cover it."

Natalie's mind raced. She had to find a way. She couldn't lose her mother, she was all she had, her only family.

Growing up with a single mother hadn’t been easy, and having an idiot for a father didn’t help matters.

Her mother was her everything. She recalled the countless shifts her mother worked to provide for her, the sacrifices she made to give her a better life.

She remembered the nights her mother came home exhausted, but still managed to smile and ask about her day which was met with a grumpy response.

Natalie's eyes welled up with tears as she realized how much her mother had done for her. She had always taken it for granted, assuming it was just what mothers did. But now, facing the possibility of losing her, she understood the true extent of her mother's love and dedication.

The thought of living without her mother was unbearable. Natalie couldn't imagine a world where she couldn't turn to her for advice, for comfort, for love. She knew she had to do everything in her power to save her mother, no matter what it took.

And then, like a whisper in her ear, she remembered Rafael Sanchez. The ruthless mafia lord with a reputation for getting what he wanted.

She’d met him at the bar where she worked night shifts and she had been immediately drawn to his charisma and power. He was a man who commanded attention, who exuded confidence and control. She had been both fascinated and intimidated by him. He was charming and charismatic, with a quick wit and a sharp tongue. But he was also ruthless and cunning.

Rafael had been a regular at the bar for a while, and Natalie had learned that he was a man who got what he wanted, no matter the cost. He was ruthless in business and pleasure, and his reputation preceded him.

Natalie had been drawn to him, despite her better judgment. She had been fascinated by his power and his confidence, and she had found herself wanting to be around him more and more. But as she got to know him better, she realized that he was not a man to be trifled with. He was a man who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted, and he had no qualms about using violence and intimidation to get it.

And now, as she desperation gripped her, she remembered the offer he had made her once, the offer she had laughed off as a joke. "If you ever need anything, anything at all, just come to me." She had thought it was just a line, a way to get her into bed. But now, she wondered if he had meant it. Wondered if he would help her save her mother's life.

She knew it was a long shot, but she had to try. For her mother's sake, she had to try.

Natalie's heart raced as she considered reaching out to Rafael. She had no other options, no other way to save her mother.

She pulled out her phone and hesitated for a moment before sending him a text. "Rafael, I need your help. My mother is dying and I need money for her treatment. Please, can we meet?"

She waited anxiously for a response, her mind racing with possibilities. Had she made a mistake? Was she desperate enough to resort to begging a mafia lord for help?

But then, her phone buzzed with an incoming text. "Meet me at the bar at midnight."

Natalie's heart skipped a beat as she read the message.

She couldn't help but wonder what she was getting herself into. She knew that Rafael was not a man to be trusted, but she had no other choice She had to save her mother, no matter the cost.

She watched her mother, her face winced with pain from the from the cancer that was ravaging her body. Natalie's eyes welled up with tears again as she saw the faintness in her mother's eyes, the sunken cheeks, and the fragile skin that seemed to be stretched too thin over her bones. She felt a surge of anger and helplessness, wondering why this was happening to her mother, who had always been so strong and vibrant.

Her mother's eyes fluttered open, and she smiled weakly at Natalie. "Hey, kiddo," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'm so proud of you."

Natalie's tears spilled over, and she took her mother's hand in hers, trying to hold back her sobs. "Mom, I'm so sorry," she whispered. "I'm so sorry I didn't appreciate you more when I had the chance."

Her mother's eyes filled with tears, and she squeezed Natalie's hand. "You did appreciate me, sweetie," she whispered. "You just didn't know how to show it. But I knew. I always knew how much you loved me."

Natalie's heart broke at the sound of her mother's words, and she knew she had to do everything in her power to save her. She took a deep breath and stood up, determination coursing through her veins. "I'm going to get the money, Mom," she said, her voice firm. "I'm going to get the treatment, and you're going to get better. I promise."

She promised, she had to, no matter the cost.
