Chapter one

“I don't want to” I wiggle my nose at my best friend Tamara

“Come on this is like a once in a lifetime opportunity, do you know how hard I worked for these tickets? This is an exclusive club that opens up only twice a year, I assure you Scar you don't want to miss this” she says wiggling her fingers in my face

“We have college to worry about, but all you're worried about is a club?” I say spinning around in my chair

“An exclusive club for the rich and famous!! Come on celebrities will be there, and I won't go if you don't” she pouts, her ebony skin glowing in the slightly dark room, she fixes her dark brown eyes on me knowing am going to say yes to her, I can never say no to her and she knows it

“Fine I groan, we stay a few hours and we leave, and you're driving to the city, that's a three-hour drive, and am not gonna take it,” I say in a warning tone

“Of course” she squeals pulling me into a hug, “this will be the best night of our lives”

I nod with a sigh tucking my brown hair behind my ears, I turn to the mirror my brown eyes staring back at me, “I don't think I can look 21 thou” I frown, and it's not like I’m so pretty, I have normal looks like normal people I think inwardly

“Makeup can make you look a decade older if you want” she calls from my closet, pulling out a dress, “here” she throws it over my face, “Get ready, I'll be right back “

I watch as she quickly leaves the room with a bang, her steps heavy on the small creaky stairs then the main door slams close as she heads to the next house

I quickly take a bath, pulling the dress on I spin around facing the mirror, the red velvet short dress hugs my curves, and although I’m short, heels can easily fix it

I’m almost done with my hair when she walks into my room again and my eyes almost pop out of my sockets

“Holy shit Tamara when did you get that?” I ask referring to her dress

“Last week? You like?” She spins around, “Jason got it for me,” she says referring to her boyfriend

“Damn” I stare at the gold strapless dress with a gaping back, the dress is short and hugs all her figures, and on her feet are gold 6-inch heels making her even taller than normal

“Here” she pulls out black heels from a bag the same height as hers, “Dad got me these for graduation but I already have a pair like these” she explains

“Wow Tamara you're going all out,” I say staring at her face plastered with makeup her curly hair surrounding her head

“Told you makeup works wonders come on be quick Jason is waiting for us,” she quickly helps me with my makeup by the time she's done, we easily look 21, I grab my purse hanging it over my shoulders along with the fake ID I've had for a about a year now

We quickly leave, walking a few houses over to Jason's we easily spot him leaning by his car, his blonde hair swishing in the cool air, Tamara squeals rushing to him, they make out for a while before I fake cough pulling them apart

“We should go now I pull open the backseat” settling in the car.

“Oooh someone is in a rush, maybe you can finally get rid of your virginity uh?” Tamara says

“My virginity is not something I can just get rid of, especially to some high school boy,” no offense Jason I say from the back

“None taken,” he says still driving

“So that means you plan on losing it at some point” she wiggles her brows

“We are off to college in a month, I guess it could somewhat happen if I find someone responsible and old enough” I shrug not feeling weird talking about something so personal since we are all best friends and practically grew up together, they are like the siblings I never had.

“That reminds me the house agent called, she found a nice apartment on campus for us, and in three weeks a guy and his friends who just graduated will be moving out they decided to leave the furniture but that would mean giving him a little something,” Jason says from the front seeing as the three of us will be moving in together since we are all attending NYU

“I'll get something out of my savings, my mom is already angry at me for not staying in the free dorm room the school is giving me after the full-ride scholarship I got, now she has to pay for any apartment too,” I roll my eyes.

“I don't think she likes what I decided to pursue either, she still feels technology will disappoint me one day or the other” I sigh saying what they already know

“Don't mind your mom Scar, you're a genius and she's going to be the one chasing after you after you become something great in the future” Jason says frowning slightly at the absurdity of my mom

My mom has always hated the new and loved the old, the same thing applies for computers, she keeps her files in documents noted down by herself, we don't have a computer at home, and she even got more bitter after my dad left us when I was two and the computer system's which she trusted so much could not find him.

I got my first laptop from Tamara's dad who works at some popular Tech company and then my skills developed, she hated the idea but I always got away with everything.

Jason is right, I am a genius when it comes to computers, technology, and anything, at the age of 10 I made my first rocket in my backyard from spare parts Tamara had gotten from her house, and at 13 I started hacking into sites that no one could, at 15, that was the first time I hacked into the government system.

I wanted to find my dad anything resembling the pictures I had at home because my mom never told me his name, even the name on my birth certificate belongs to her since they were never legally married, I remember her telling me once, how I was meant to change my name to my dad's when they got married but he disappeared, with all these thoughts running through my head I decided to move on, I refused to search for him because he never came for me when we still lived in the same house since he left, we never moved we waited but he never came back.

I was scared to find out other things too, if he was dead, or in prison, or some nasty drug dealer, there was a single picture of him at home and that's all I had since I remembered nothing about him from when I was born till when he left so I never bothered.

At 17 I finally hit the jackpot, our school had security issues so I fixed the CCTV cameras and wrote down a whole new code for the school security system, it was so good that the principal and the head director of the board wrote a letter to NYU for a scholarship, I thought that would get me a half scholarship or something but a few months later I helped the town police track down a criminal that had been wanted far more than the day I was born, the police put in a word too so I got a full scholarship for the computer program, although my mom is solidly happy about the scholarship, I’m sure she wanted me to go into business or finance like her, according to her that’s a stable job not playing with computers.

I never told anyone about the government system thing though except my two best friends currently driving me to the club, only they knew just how talented I was.

I look around me, the hours passed by so easily, thinking about my family, and what my new life is going to be like when I move to New York.

In high school I was the quiet normal girl, nobody knew who we three were, we were not nerds or popular people, we were bystanders who just wanted to live, we just wanted to finish high school and hop into the next phase, our parents are not overly rich either, they are normal enough for us, they are the usual fights with my mom sometimes but other than that we are all good, they have enough money to take care of our needs, we got our wants with our own money from working.

Tamara is a huge computer geek too but she never did the whole illegal hacking into government files thing, it made sense since both her parents are computer geeks, Jason is a whizz with numbers and was going with finance, we were normal, we attended parties at a right amount, well they did and dragged me along while I stayed for an hour or two before going home, we sat and watched the stars, we had picnics, we have once in a lifetime opportunities like this, sneaking into bars and I won't say I've never wanted to do this before because I've always wanted to that's why I made the fake ID's for us in the first place

The car comes to a stop in a parking lot and I can already hear the thump of music coming from the huge building, this was no ordinary club and I could see it since there was no line, it’s all about if you had a ticket and an identification card, so there was no line.

We walk to the single bouncer at the front door and hand out our tickets, he checks our IDs without batting a lash, putting the colored stamps on the inside of our wrists and we happily move inside the club.

We follow the short hallway into the main club, the Cellings circular and high with dark strobing colored lights, a DJ set on a high pedestal, and stairs that lead upstairs, something to separate us from the richest of the rich, a song comes on making people scream and shout like a concert, dancing like no one cares

My body moves already, and my feet taps the floor to the beat as Jason leads us to the bar, I grip my purse tightly as we walk through the crowd toward one of the three bars, we choose the closest one by the side and thankfully it’s semi-empty

I order my drink, I don’t want to get flat-out drunk because I’ll be the driver back home the way Tamara and Jason start with tequila shots.

“Yes” “yes” they both shout at the same time as they continue with another shot, I laugh steadily beside them at their antics

Tamara drags me to the dance floor first after several minutes, Jason joins her and I push myself away to dance on my own, like I said bystander I was that girl nothing ever happened to, people had stories about how they meet the love of their lives or enemies or whatever in clubs like this, I was that girl that danced through the night alone and went home content.
