Anderson's POV
Once we stepped out of the ward, I demanded of Dr Sofia, the next step to take.
“What do we do?” I asked, my voice coming out louder than I intended.
“We move straight to my office, so we can have a proper conversation.” Dr Sofia replied in a hushed voice, staring at me as though I had suddenly grown horns on my head. We walked in silence afterwards towards Dr Sofia's office.
Once inside her office, I shut the door and Dr Sofia exploded, berating me.
“What the hell were you thinking, starting up a conversation right outside the door? Is it your plan to get us caught?” She asked, angrily. Her voice sounded like a hissing snake.
“I'm sorry, I was overwhelmed and let my emotions get in the way.” I apologized but Dr Sofia still looked unimpressed.
“You had better hope we were not eavesdropped on.” She breathed, still visibly angry.
“I wasn't that loud, and you know it.” I found myself arguing with her, trying to defend my actions.
“You were…” the door pulled open just then, cutting her off. For a moment, I was grateful to whoever it was that just came in.
I immediately regretted my initial gratitude once I saw William step into the office. As far as I am concerned, he is a cunning and selfish son of a bitch, and not worthy of any gratitude from me.
The displeasure on Sofia's face over William's unauthorized entry into her office didn't go unnoticed by me, I was surprised William did not even pay the slightest attention to the look of displeasure on Dr Sophia's face.
“My wife is bent on having Stuart go through the surgery.” William announced, locating a seat directly opposite Dr Sofia which somehow annoyed her even more.
“We know about that already, William". Dr Sophia replied, her annoyance evident in her voice and tone.
“What do you suggest that I do? I need not blow my cover by refusing.” William added, hoping that we understand his perspective at least.
“Don't you dare refuse it.” William was taken aback by the remark, not what he expected to hear.
“It is perfect for our plan in a way.” Dr Sofia continued, maintaining the composure I have come to associate with her.
“How?” Myself and William asked simultaneously.
“Calm down, gentlemen. Your being clueless is also part of the plan.” Sofia assured, walking towards the door.
She pulled it open and motioned William out of her office.
“Everything is alright.” Sofia mouthed to William, just as she pushed the door close.
Coming back to resume her former position, Dr Sofia handed an envelope to me.
“What is this?” I asked, even though I knew it was money, and lots of it.
“It is a thank-you for your partnership. I must admit, you've been really helpful.” Dr Sofia said, winking at me as I proceeded to count the money.
Although I can make use of the money I was given, the thought of Stuart hasn't left my mind since I became a partner, although a coerced one.
I forced a smile when I noticed Dr Sofia's eyes on me and then I mouthed a “Thank you” to her even though I didn't mean it.
“Have you thought about the possibility of the experiment becoming a total failure?” I finally asked the question which has been bothering me for days.
“Dr Anderson, you should know that there's no such thing as a failed experiment. There is only a successful experiment or one that teaches a lesson.” Sofia replied, switching moods to befit the moment. Now she looked like an old school teacher.
“Isn't the boy's life too much to risk over an experiment?” I pushed a little further.
“His father agreed to it. Or would you rather volunteer yourself to be experimented on?” She asked.
When she got no response from me, she chuckled and then continued.
“You need not worry, Dr Anderson. We already have a specimen”
“I wasn't worried a bit.” I argued, while my mind drifted back to the scene in Stuart's ward as his mom sobbed at the news of his supposed brain disease.
“Welcome on board.” Dr Sofia squealed, heading towards the refrigerator.
She soon came back with her lab coat off, holding a bottle of wine and two tumblers.
“To Dr Anderson's return.” She teased after pouring us a drink.
“If we are cheering for my coming back, then I ain't drinking that. I don't recall leaving here for somewhere else.” I replied, in a bid to not join in the said celebration. Drinking to someone's sorrow which was our doing didn't sit well with me.
“How about, cheers to a successful experiment?” Sofia suggested, and I suddenly felt sick.
“I have to attend to some patients in a matter of minutes. It is unethical for me to have a drink a few minutes before.” I explained while I secretly applauded myself for coming out with such a brilliant excuse within a short while.
“That's true.” Sofia responded, retreating to pour the drinks away.
Once she returned, she headed straight to me, her mood and expression switching yet again to befit the moment. Now she looked freaking hot like a whore, ready to go through a sexcapade with her lover.
“Rewind to a few hours ago, where were we?” Sofia asked, moving seductively towards me.
She wrapped her hands around my shoulders, staring straight into my eyes.
“In the middle of something special.” I managed to respond right inside Sofia's mouth, which had mine in a telling kiss.
“Will you tell me what you have in mind as regards the surgery?” I asked, pulling away from the kiss.
“Not now, Anderson, not now.” Sofia warned, putting up a finger. Our lips interlocked still, she traced my collar bones, down to my chest.
Her fingers, as usual, worked meticulously as she proceeded to undo the buttons of my shirt.
Just as she bent to unhook my belt, the hospital alarm went off, signaling an emergency.
“We had better hurry to the scene.” I said bending over to pick my shirt which was now lying on the floor.
“There are other doctors in the hospital, Anderson. We need not worry. Besides, we have more important assignments.” She replied with a wink, placing the shirt back to the floor where I picked it from.
With my hands tightly wrapping Sofia's now bare waist, we moved farther into the office.
