Ransom

I let out a deep breath as I walked through the double doors of the Warner Building. The Warner Building! My body shuddered as I felt the refreshing cool air hitting my body. Once again, I sent a prayer of thanks to whatever higher being had allowed me to score this opportunity. This wasn’t some run of the mill company, this was the “it girl” of the business world and today was my first day as a secretary, well one of them at least.

But still!

Granted it was not what I'd spent 4 years in university for but putting a name like Kevin Warner on my CV would do great things for me. Phenomenal things even. I could work anywhere if I ever thought of leaving. not like that was going to happen anytime soon.

The guard on duty at the entrance of the building greeted me with a nod, possibly making a quick analysis on whether or not he could allow me to enter.

The room was clean with everyone running about looking like they'd stepped out of the office edition of a glamour magazine successfully making me feel severely underdressed and highly self-conscious, fashion was not my strong suit. I preferred comfort over class.

Walking up to the front desk I bumped into a person not really paying attention to them as I mumbled out a weak apology and turned to the lady behind the desk giving her my details for formality. We had already gone though this when I was informed, I got the job

"So, you're the new girl that's going to be working for Kev." The person who I'd previously ignored said after I'd spoken to the receptionist.

I nodded.

"Well follow me this way."

He said turning on his heel before giving me time to respond. I followed him to the elevator and immediately felt claustrophobic the moment I stepped on. Gripping the metal handle, I started reciting pet names in my head, a method I'd come up with to calm my nerves in the past

"Not a fan of elevators?"

I nodded, "Closed spaces actually, I just need a minute." Silence followed, making the increasingly awkward situation unbearable.

"I'm Maya by the way. Maya Black."

He looked down at me and smiled. I took this time to study him. He towered over me. With eyes the colour of the ocean on a stormy night, short dark hair that was parted at the side and had a lean but muscular built.

Yep he definitely worked out.

If only he didn’t have that infuriating smug/goofy/idiotic grin on his face he would have perfect.

"Like what you see."

“Not at the moment.” Embarrassed to have actually been caught staring at him. Admittedly, he was a handsome man but something about him made me want to smack that ever present smile off his face and unfortunately, he heard me. Judging by the scowl on his face.

I looked up and smiled trying to salvage the situation as best as I could but I couldn't hide the obvious tint on my face.

"Bruce. Bruce Warner. Nice to meet you Maya." He smiled again. All he was missing was puppy ears and a tail.

"So, tell me, what made you apply to be Kevin's personal assistant?" That gorgeously annoying smile never leaving his face.

"I applied to be his secretary." I said correcting him.

"No, we already have someone for that. It says here in your application you said PA."

"That's not possible, the advertisement said secretary and I know that's what I applied for." I was getting anxious; things were not going according to my plan and it was unsettling but still I looked at his files and he was right. I was going to be the personal assistant of that, that, that….
