Chapter 1

In 2020, a great pandemic of covid-19 hit the entire planet, changing our way of living and making us live social distancing. This made the pharmaceutical industry tirelessly seek a way to slow down the contamination, the following year, several vaccines were produced around the world, global contamination even worse and bloody with Brazil as ground zero.

The infected became human flesh eaters and thirsty for blood, they were half vampires because they only came out at night and half zombies, they were called by the few survivors of “transformeds" these creatures as well as the virus that modified them had an aversion to light.

Tens of thousands of people were attacked and the virus spread in a matter of days leaving only 8% of the world's population that lived in hiding, as the creatures went out at nightfall looking to feed on the few humans left.

Flashback

It was an ordinary day, maybe not all that ordinary. On January 25, 2021, the covid-19 pandemic was already in its fourth wave of contamination and many had already died, some people resisted maintaining social distance and continued with the agglomerations. Anxiety about vaccines has made the pharmaceutical industry work as never before, seeking to manufacture them all over the planet.

In Brazil the coronavac vaccine was developed and released by Anvisa, several Brazilians were immunized, but weeks later the first symptoms of contamination occurred. Severe fever, body aches, and cardiac arrest followed by spontaneous resuscitation, but this only happened at night.

Before the first cases of resuscitation, the world was slowly trying to get back to normal, because with the vaccines, flights had been released and great shows and events too, people thought that everything was going normal and they were getting back to the routine as before the pandemic.

But when vaccination started across the country, those who died came back to life in a matter of seconds, devouring people and sucking all their blood, but the light hurt them and the first signs were sunburn on the skin when exposed to lighting.

….

In a matter of hours, Brazil was taken over by the living dead and many who had left the country had been vaccinated carrying the mutation of the virus that would transform them in a short time, thus taking the contamination to the four corners of the planet, because with the bite the change was instantaneous and even faster than the vaccine, because it was direct.

Mexico City - Mx, 7:30 pm that same day, Mary worked at Benito International Airport in the department that handled passenger check-in. She was beautiful and 23 years old, lived with a friend, studied in the morning, and worked at night.

That day everything seemed normal, but the newspapers on television were already reporting that something very wrong was happening in Brazil, specifically in Rio de Janeiro. Everyone stopped to see the screen displayed in the airport lobby.

"In Brazil, there are suspected cases of murder and even reports of cannibalism. It is not yet known for sure how many fatal victims are counted, but we advise everyone who is here in the country to stay in their homes and lock their doors..."

At that moment all the lights go out and the screen turns off leaving the crowd that was at the airport terrified and screaming.

-My God, what's going on? - Asks Mary, scared, and out of nowhere the light comes back revealing the terrified expression on everyone's face in that lobby.

Some passengers were descending on the escalator and from afar Mary saw a crowd and one of the passengers being bitten and in a matter of seconds attacking a woman next to her.

Mary runs to escape as chaos ensues in that place...screams and blood were everywhere, bites and throats are being drained by hungry beings.

A few miles away, Jason was at home with his wife and children. He was a famous lawyer, he practiced shooting and collecting weapons. He was the father of Felipe, a 13-year-old pre-teen who loved video games, and Lúcia, who was only 6 years old. As it was January they were on school holidays, his wife was called Sônia and they had been married for 15 years and they loved each other very much. They were all calm, it was a night like any other.

Jason was cleaning his weapons when he noticed the light drop. Little Lucia was playing with her bicycle, waiting for her mother to keep her company, the light on the pole went out and she got scared but soon came back leaving her calmer, Sônia would stay with the girl and be just going to take a chicken out of the oven.

Outside, the girl sees a man approaching...he was walking strangely, he seemed disoriented. When he sees her standing there, he runs wild towards her and she screams.

Felipe runs to see what had happened and almost faints when he sees his sister being devoured by the neck by that huge man, he screams and runs to the kitchen where his mother was.

Felipe - Mom, Mom Lucia was attacked and she's going to die!

Sonia - Have you gone crazy? Don't play around with such a thing.

She runs outside and Lucia was on her back, leaving Felipe in disbelief as he had seen her throat in pieces seconds ago, how could she be standing after that?

Felipe - Mom I don't understand!

Felipe quickly puts his hands on his head.

Sônia - You will pay me dearly for this stupid joke!

She got very close to the little one and slowly she turned to her mother, she was bathed in blood and her throat was in pieces.

Sonia screams and this time Jason, who was in the basement cleaning the weapons, heard and took the loaded gun, went up the flight of stairs, and saw his wife wounded in the hand locking the door from the inside and Felipe's terrified look.

Jason - What happened? Where is Lucia?

he asks screaming.

Felipe - Dad she attacked us!

was all Felipe could say as his mother squirmed, she was contaminated by the bite on his hand. The boy took a step back.

Jason - Sonia what do you have? What happened? tell me.

Asks Jason screaming.

Felipe - Daddy doesn’t get close to her! That's how Lucia looked too before she attacked us.

The boy screamed trying to make his father understand the situation.

Jason - She's your mother and she won't hurt us.

Sonia's eyes went white, Felipe tried to run to his father but she grabbed him, biting his neck hard and ripping a large piece of skin while Jason and the boy screamed. It was only left to him in the moment of despair to shoot his wife in the head, making her release the boy who was gushing blood.

In a matter of seconds she stood up with the wound on her forehead that was still smoking and spurting blood, she looked at him without any expression and fled breaking the glass and jumping through the living room window.

Jason went to help his son, he was crying desperately at what was happening to his children and his wife. He took a cloth to stop the blood that came out in buckets and the boy was crying in pain and terror.

Felipe - Dad I feel my body burning, the same happened to Lúcia.

He was screaming and Jason was crying holding him in his arms. He knew he couldn't save him, looks at the gun in his hand that was still warm from the previous shot.

Felipe already felt his body change...he takes his father's hand with the gun and puts it on his head. Stopping the screams of pain for a few moments, he wanted his father to give him peace and he closes his eyes.

Jason felt a tear flow, Felipe opens his eyes completely white like Sonia's and before he attacked him Jason shot him in the head. That moment was without a doubt the worst of his entire life to see his family decimated....but he knew that his son would "return" just like his wife moments ago.

He ran to the basement and locked the door, he was going to get all the weapons he could, his cell phone had no signal but he had an old radio and tried to call to try to find something out.

"Whoever is listening, don't leave where you are. They are photosensitive, they fear light... we can only be safe with light...!"

It was all he could hear until the frequency dropped, Jason lay there hidden and heartbroken for his family all night.
