Chapter 2

I almost made a joke by mentioning divorce. If it weren't for the child, Remy and I wouldn't have had a wedding.

Remy thought I was jealous of Avery and said that to get his attention, so he didn't even look up.

"What? A new trick?" he said. "Knowing you can't threaten me with our daughter, now with a breakup?"

Our daughter was diagnosed with cancer a year ago. I couldn’t count how many times I’d received notices of critical illness since then.

I called him because she wanted to see her father. But Remy never visited her once.

He thought I was using our daughter to gain sympathy and threaten him, even believing that I had fabricated her illness!

Who in their right mind would joke about their own child's health?

I gave him a look of complete disappointment. "Think whatever you want. I'm leaving." I dragged my suitcase and started to leave.

Avery, leaning in Remy's arms, spoke softly, "Remy, I heard you planned to take your daughter to see the aurora. To watch the aurora with me, you missed it. Did Adalynn get angry about it?"

Remy comforted her gently, "It's not your fault. Some things are more urgent than others. The aurora can be seen anytime, but..."

Before he could finish, I let out a cold laugh. Ignoring them, I dragged my suitcase towards the door.

Remy seemed to sense something was wrong and grabbed my hand angrily.

"It was midnight! Do you have to make a fuss?”

He looked at my swollen eyes and froze. "Just missing the aurora. Why are you crying so hard? I'll spare some time next week to take our daughter out again, okay?"

Next week? Our daughter doesn't have next week!

If he cared even a little more about our child, he wouldn't say such things!

I shook off his hand. "No need!"

Remy looked at his empty palm in shock.

I used to obey him without conditions. Clearly, he didn’t expect such change of attitude.

As he regained his composure and tried to catch up with me, Avery held him back. "Remy, it's all my fault. Even though I know your daughter is faking her illness, I shouldn't compete with a child for your attention. Now I've made Adalynn angry."

Faking... faking her illness? My mind went blank.

By the time I realized what was happening, I had already slapped Avery across the face.
